Fabien's story in VTMB2 is such a good example of personal horror in vampire the masquerade, I'm obsessed

✓ the pain of good intentions and kindness being looked down on and taken advantage of

✓ the horror of being toyed with by forces more ruthless and powerful than you

✓ the existential crisis of losing parts of yourself and the desperate need to paint yourself in a better light in order to cope

✓ the powerlessness of seeing 'good' kindred be killed and 'bad' ones succeed, and there being no justice

this is absolute, pure VtM to me,,, like pump this into my veins

VTMB2 SPOILERS

something I really like about the bloodlines 2 Malkavians is how it’s shown that their psychological decay and “madness” isn’t just a product of them being Malkavians, and it is instead a result of their traumas and how they have been treated by kindred society.

Gideon became the way he was at the start of the game because he had spent a century skewered by rebar in some underground ruins with only his grieving partner for the occasional company.

Misty became the way she is because her partner attempted to kill her, only for her to be dropped into a completely different world effectively ruled by the people who tried to kill her, basically sireless, and having to eternally carry a child that will never be born.

And Fabien’s psychological trouble can (to some extent) be blamed on the continuous gaslighting, mistreatment, and memory erasure that he has had to endure almost completely alone for the past century.

Obviously being Malkavians didn’t help with any of this, and there’s always room for discussion (especially with Fabien) on neurodivergency entirely unrelated to being a kindred or any event they’ve experienced, but it is something I think it’s cool about the three of them. I find it interesting that, at least in some cases, kindred society unknowingly forces people into the archetypes they project onto them. The idea that part of the reason Malkavians are always seen as ‘mad’ is because other vampires keep driving them to that point.
