FAQ

I get a fair amount of asks with the same few questions, so I’m gonna pin this post:

oriented aro coining post: here!

What does loveless aro mean?

(x) briefly: loveless aromanticism is a relatively new term, and has no solid definition yet. however, my personal definition is as follows.

aromantic individuals who reject the idea that “love” is necessary to be good. This is often correlated with not experiencing multiple forms of attraction, whether romantic, sexual, platonic, alterous/queerplatonic, or otherwise.

What does non-SAM aro mean?

non-Split Attraction Model aromantic; the SAM is a model that, at its most basic, splits attraction into romantic and sexual orientations. a non-SAM asexual simply identifies as asexual, a non-SAM aro simply identifies as aromantic.

Isn’t non-SAM aro or non-SAM ace just aroace?

They are not synonymous with aroace; I experience sexual attraction but cannot separate that from my aromantic orientation in a meaningful way. I do not want to be described with sexual orientation terminology.

If you’re wondering if you may be aromantic, I strongly advise checking out my “am i aro” tag on @aro-culture-is

damn, I really wished more there was more aro rep out there. Especially aroallo rep. sigh what wouldn't I give for-

*remembers Toph Beifong from Avatar the last airbender exists*

Now hold on a fucking second.

She wears green, she has two daughters in legend of korra with no known fathers (she canonically fucks), she isn't really seen that much with a potential romantic love interest (at least to my memory). Yes she did seem to have a crush on Sokka at one point but that might've also just been a demiro situation or confusing other attraction types and feelings for romantic ones (+ they travelled together for months to save the world and fought a lot of battles together, it would be weirder if they didn't form a bond of any kind already by that time)...

And she invented metalbending!

That last one doesn't have shit to do with being aromantic, but it is still an awesome bonus to have.

+ If she had the words I totally could imagine her just going "yeah, I'm aroallo, idc, just deal with it."

Fucking legend her.

as much as i may talk about friendship and queerplatonicism know this. i don't think there is any type of relationship that is inherently more meaningful than any other type. the solution to amatonormativity is not to put platonic relationships on a pedestal

"being aromantic doesnt affect your lived experiences like being gay/lesbian does"

is just code for: "i have never actually interacted with aro people"

or, in my experience: "I have never listened to an aro person in good faith."

if ryland grace hit me a year ago i wouldve been writing the most emotionally fraught aromantic fics about him and rocky. its the desiring a true and deep bond with somebody while intrinsically at odds with the nature of typical romance. the fear and frustration over what you feel, or what you dont feel and the fact that you have zero control over it. trying to hammer yourself into shape because part of it, the connection and the bond and the forever, is what you want, and it doesnt feel possible to have that and not the other stuff. and rocky being like: i love you anyway. it does not have to be in one way or another. eridian ideas of romance or human ideas of romance are irrelevant to us, so there is no framework for what our relationship has to be. its just us. and grace is like Yeah okay. okay. its just us. species of two bullshit

i remember a post from a few months ago about romance being this huge thing in eridian culture and i went insane about it in a different way than the OP probably intended because its just soooooo. romance being this trap thats sprung on you To Me. suffocating amatonormativity. i need ten stories about romance being evil NOW

sometimes finding aromanticism in media isn’t literally about aromanticism… sometimes it’s about the deconstruction of love as a concept and the subversion of its perception as inherently humanising. it’s about the decentering of romance as a driving force in the narrative. and also sometimes it’s about love being central to the narrative but in a way that defies all traditional categorisations of romantic / platonic / anything else. it is the secret third thing yet so much more and less at once. the point is aromanticism is everywhere for those with eyes to see

why is fandom less fun when black ppl or aro ppl or trans ppl tell you to check your biases. if its 'just a headcanon' why is it such a big deal that ppl ask you to think about why you made it

why do you never engage with black characters, why do you always think the same type of character is transmasc/fem, why do you only find romance interesting to the point of ignoring plotlines so you can create ships

are we actually just being the fun police or are you just being a bigot. why is pretending we dont exist necessary for your enjoyment

Tumblr actually just recently added the ability to exclude terms and tags in the search!! It uses the same minus sign format that search engines use!

For example: #aromantic -#asexual

You basically just put a minus sign before each word or tag you DON'T want in the search

(answering this So Very Late just to put it directly as a post lol)

proposing a new genre of fiction called an anti-romance where u r presented w a couple at the start & the story is about their emotional journey towards a catastrophic break up

I'm apparently so consistently aroace that a friend of mine uses me as a measurement for whether or not something counts as "romantic," based on when I stop understanding what he's talking about.

@loraxofygg Stop being funnier than me on my own post (/j).

anyone else feeling rather... annoyed at the way ppl have come to define and use queerplatonic and qprs? So many times I see ppl talk abt qprs saying they're "friendship but Deeper" or "a relationship strictly between friendship and romance" or "essentially romance lite/romance for aromantics" and like. A qpr definitely can be all that if the participants want that, but to say that this is THE definition of queerplatonic is actually going directly against the very goal for which the term was created. Queerplatonic was supposed to give us a word to be able to talk about relationships that don't fit neatly into the "romantic" and "platonic" boxes, whilst also deconstructing the relationship hierarchy and the idea that friendships are fundamentally lesser than romantic relationships. So can we please stop using qprs as a way to once again make friendships seem like a lesser form of relationship and to reinforce the relationship hierarchy? Please?

Afaik the original definition of a qpr was smth along the lines of "a relationship that doesn't fit the traditional boundaries of a friendship". By that definition? A loveless friendship would be a qpr. A "friendship" between two aplatonics would be a qpr. A friendship where they specifically feel less emotionally connected to one another than is expected of a "normal" friendship would be a qpr. Just like how queerness isn't fundamentally about love, queerplatonicism, i.e. queering the platonic, isn't fundamentally about "putting more love" into friendships. It can be, but it doesn't have to be.

hey as a local aroace, i want to specify something.

we're no strangers to love. you know the rules and so do i (do i). a full commitments what im thinking of. you wouldnt get this from any other guy. i just wanna tell you how im feeling. gotta make you understand. never gonna give you up. never gonna let you down. never gonna run around and desert you. never gonna make you cry. never gonna say goodbye. never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
