Aldarion & Erendis: part 12 - Tar-Meneldur resigns the Sceptre
We return to pick up the tale of Aldarion and Erendis from the Unfinished Tales, the last part of the coherently written story. Aldarion shortly returned to Armenelos after going back to Rómenna, where he instructed all trees at his house to be felled: only the elven tree was spared, and for the first time he saw its beauty. This possibly implies a certain emotional awakening in him.
Shortly after, he saw Tar-Meneldur, asking for leave again on his ship Hirilondë. Aldarion, whose manner had turned grey and hostile to the King, suggested that he would be better valued elsewhere and that his father should seek another heir.
The King noted then that while Aldarion had acted out of goodness and great purpose, he had also been driven by his own wants and pleasure. Still, he did not feel fit to judge the situation well enough, although he had ruled Númenor for 140 years, and declared that he would resign the Sceptre to Aldarion.
Tar-Meneldur’s words surprised Aldarion, who had prepared for the King’s anger. In that moment he felt humbled, claiming that “the king’s humility sets him far above my pride”.
A week later, the King's Council came together, and Tar-Meneldur announced his decision. Many advised him to delay this, but the king dismissed their arguments. He had considered the options and his mind was made up: he would resign the Sceptre in the spring.
When the news of the King’s decision reached Erendis, she was dismayed and felt betrayed. Shortly after, Tar-Meneldur commanded her to come to Armenelos with her daughter Ancalimë. She agreed to send Ancalimë but begged to be excused herself.
When Meneldur showed Aldarion the letter, he was grieved, claiming it was “far below my hope of her”. Here, he is described as disappointed that she did not demand to be treated like a true Queen, and he was saddened that she would rather remain in solitude. Next week, we will continue to explore the continuation of the narrative. But it doesn’t look very promising for this stubborn estranged couple, does it?
All six watercolours inspired by JRR Tolkien’s “The Disaster of the Gladden Fields” from Unfinished Tales are now available as prints at my storenvy.

frownyface.
(posting based on my and a friend's experiences here and elsewhere, paraphrasing a friend, with permission)
the state of some people in the TRoP (and, sadly, generally in the Tolkien) fandom is really sad to see. rather than listen to opposing/ not-aligned points of view and engaging in constructive discourse, they either throw out condescending high-and-mighty bs (making them feel superior i guess) or bully and swarm. do better.
We. Are. Tired.

The Good Place is an excellent show for many reasons, but one that doesn't really get talked about enough, probably because of how the season 1 twist obscures it, is that the 'No Exit'-esque "Hell is Other People" scenario for an afterlife of eternal torture is an avante garde experiment from an Auteur demon who's trying to convince the other demons of his Vision while they're like "idk man flaying genitals works really good"
Also by the end it turns out that the actual moral of the show is “heaven is other people".
no matter what happened today, you:
- are loved
- deserve to eat
- are needed & valued
- should take care of yourself
- have a future
- will be okay
If you take the bus, wave to the driver and thank them as you're getting off the bus.
Being a bus driver is an underappreciated and difficult job but still very vital to society. They still have to do customer service and deal with rude and even aggressive passengers, and on top of that have to deal with traffic and other drivers all day (and let's face it, there's a lot of bad drivers out there who aren't considerate about sharing the road). All while providing an invaluable service of getting us where we need to go. Showing them some appreciation can go a long ways for someone doing such an important job that usually gets little to no recognition or thanks.
