We’ve officially cruised out to our #OffshoreBlockParty — with five photographers— to get a closer look at Deepwater Wind’s Block Island Wind Farm, America’s first offshore wind farm. 

The farm brings together five impressive GE Haliade wind turbines that are twice as high as the Statue of Liberty, holding a 400-ton power-generating nacelle in each of their towers. The blade tips tower 600 feet above the water, and GE’s innovative gearless permanent magnet generators can each produce 6 megawatts of power. That’s a combination that has the potential to transform the renewables business both in the U.S. and abroad.

This photo portrait shows mechanical engineer Eric King at the testing facility for GE’s 9HA gas turbine in Greenville, SC. Here, King oversees the validation of the 800-ton turbine as it’s put through simulations of conditions ranging from the Arabian desert to the mountains of Colorado. “This facility is the world’s standard for testing heavy-duty industrial turbines,” King says. “Here, you don’t have to extrapolate anything. You’re running tests that allow you to actually verify information. It’s an exciting time.” Watch the video with audio on to hear more of King’s perspective about working with this mammoth machine. 

TTCI Industrial Electrician, Jeremy Garcia, pressure washes and degreases GE’s Tier 4 Evolution Series with a treatment called “hotsy” at the Transportation Technology Center where it’s currently stationed and undergoing validation tests. Look out for the tumbleweed! Photographer Vincent LaForet chases GE’s Tier 4 locomotive as it races down the Transit Test Track at the Transportation Technology Center. Powered by GE’s 12-cylinder engine, this machine is making history as the first mainline locomotive to meet the EPA’s Tier 4 emission standards, which call for the single-largest emission reduction in rail history. Read more about GE’s groundbreaking locomotive technology at GE Reports.

To celebrate the release of GE’s Evolution Series Tier 4 Locomotive, we invited Pulitzer-prize winning photographer Vincent LaForet along to the testing facility. Here’s a bird’s-eye view of the Tier 4 as it rides along the Transit Test Track at the Transportation Technology Center. The aerial photos were shot as LaForet harnessed himself to a helicopter 7,200 feet in the air. Read more about GE’s groundbreaking locomotive technology at GE Reports.

Above is a view of GE's ADVENT, a new type of jet engine designed for both speed and fuel savings. The ADVENT, which stands for ADaptive Versatile ENgine Technology, can switch between high power and high efficiency modes, and includes new heat resistant materials called ceramic matrix composites. These materials could help revolutionize jet travel, because more heat means more power and greater fuel efficiency. The engine broke a world record for the highest temperature ever recorded in a jet engine core, and is currently undergoing further testing at GE's aviation plant in Cincinnati, OH. 

GE is working on the ADVENT alongside the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. The goal is to give fighter pilots the speed they need for a mission, and even greater fuel savings on the way home. An inside look at the world’s northernmost oil and gas installation: Statoil’s Melkøya facility in Hammerfest, Norway. GE equipment helps power the facility, which is located just 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The top image shows GE monitoring equipment, and below, a technician inspecting the LNG terminal. Nearly two kilometers below the ocean’s surface, 81-ton machines are at work. This GE subsea "Christmas Tree" controls the flow of oil and gas from undersea wells and requires serious engineering to withstand at least 20 years working amidst the harsh ocean conditions. Unlike its namesake, it’s not green and definitely not alive, but the valves are often arranged in a pattern reminiscent of a decorated tree.
