Nothing like a broken heart to bleed ink

@geekgirles

Just another 24-year-old Spanish/Spaniard INFP-T animation lover. TOTALLY NOT spoiler free. You've been warned ;) (icon by @capttower)

Well here's my aurora design for my au (No one was asking 🙃)

The same person BTW

@cocoacatoo I apologise in advance for low-key high-jacking your post, but I really cannot thank you enough for going in this direction with Aurora's redesign.

It's not just that Aurora's canon dress is ugly in my opinion, but it also feels very lazy in terms of visual storytelling. Fabrice Nzinzi was the director of season 3 at least, and it was him who added all the symbolism to the artistic direction.

He was the one who decided to desaturate the Sadida's hair colour as well as to add autumnal hues to highlight the kingdom's decline now that the king is on his deathbed. A decision he didn't just apply to Amalia's outfit, but also to Aurora's dress.

However, while I do greatly respect his artistic choices as I feel that's part of what was missing in season 4, which felt much more straightforward and leaves me theorising and over-analysing every single aspect of the show, I personally feel it would have been better to keep their original idea of having Aurora wearing Osamodas robes even as Armand's consort.

Which is what I feel you have done. Where the true, say, percentage of her loyalty is reflected by her dark blue dress and massive feather cape, with only a little flower on her belt to hint at her ties with the Sadida Kingdom. I don't know if I'm reading into this too much or if I'm spot on, but it feels like you're trying to convey that Aurora at the very least starts out much more staunchly loyal to her birth kingdom, even though she's starting to build a new life in the Sadida Kingdom.

(Also, thank you for giving her an open cape instead of a closed one that covers most of her body like in canon. It's 2D animation! It's not that hard to be original!)

Anyway, back to my original point.

While less subtle than depending solely on Aurora's actions like being oddly nice to Amalia or having her bangs cover half her face, by keeping Aurora's original robes, eagle-eyed viewers are capable of connecting the dots and realise she's meant to be an outsider. An Osamodas princess amongst Sadida Royalty with no intention of assimilating into her husband's culture as his queen.

Not only that, but her final design doesn't even scream "New Queen of the Sadidas" all that much.

Despite supposedly taking inspiration from it, Queen Sheran Sharm's dress is infinitely more regal and queenly than Aurora's. While the latter just wears a Sadida-inspired red dress with a leaf added to its waistline, Armand and Amalia's mother has countless other details that really help establish her as an elegant and refined Queen of the Forests.

Several flowers adorn her multicoloured dress, which in itself is quite elaborate. She seems to have a leafy shawl around her shoulders. Aside from her ornate antler tiara, she also wears a thorny vine as a necklace. And her hair is styled into a long, immaculate ponytail.

Even Amalia was far more regal in her previous princess outfits than Aurora is as Queen Consort.

Her first dress is a clear copy of her mother's, only more age-appropiate, so it is naturally more beautiful and embellished than her casual outfit. And her beloved OVA design is so iconic precisely because it's the perfect blend between refined and somewhat exotic and wild, which firmly establishes her as a more mature Forest Princess.

Even her dress as Eva's maid of honour, despite being barely featured, is far more impressive than anything Aurora wears since her official debut.

Aurora's dress, in comparison, is just plain. Far less detailed. Not helped by the new antler tiaras, which I think we have all criticised as inferior at some point. She has no ornaments or anything that really makes her stand out as the new queen. And her design was actually simplified in season 4, where they got rid of her manicured nails, her more apparent use of make-up like lipstick and blush, etc.

Maybe this plainess was also deliberate. Maybe, aside from using red to transmit that feeling of melancholy, Aurora's dress is far less impressive precisely because she was intended to be a poor successor to Queen Sheran Sharm all along. But Nzinzi wasn't the one to come up with the final design. He just gave pointers to help the artists in charge come up with her final design.

So we might never know.

That said, I really do wish he stayed for season 4. We really needed his eye for symbolism, especially as Amalia got stuck wearing a palette-swapped version of her old outfit, but with a cape and the same unimpressive tiara as her brother.

I miss when Ankama actually put effort in its character design...

I find this scene to be hilarious (note the sarcasm) because nothing Tristepin says is actually accurate!

First of all, you were not "barely older than [Flopin]" when you first met. You were in your mid-to-late teens. That's a full decade older than Flopin is during season 4! Even Yugo and Amalia were already twice his age when you all first crossed paths, and they both had reliable guardians. Amalia had Eva, her bodyguard; and Yugo had Ruel—who, for his many flaws, would never have let his best friend's son get hurt.

Flopin only has Madagaskan. A complete stranger who happens to be his grandfather and a dangerous former assassin.

Second of all, maybe Tristepin already had some experience travelling the world, but season 4 essentially confirmed that Eva, while an experienced fighter, spent her entire life alongside the Sheran Sharms in the Sadida Kingdom. Her entire childhood and early teens she was static in one place. That is the opposite of being an experienced adventurer by the time you met the rest of the gang.

This all ends up as an extremely shoe-horned and contradictory argument that is trying (and failing miserably) to distract us from the fact that ToT was too busy projecting his son leaving for college onto a literal child to actually pay attention to his own canon and realise this is all just plain false.

This is the concept of characters from Maskemane comics

The first of Farow design is just like default female Sram from Dofus, it's like making her a sexy type just bc she's the love interest for Maskemane. I kinda wish she wore full armour for the final just for protection since she's a mercenary.

Thou the art concept for the characters is cool.

Salvaging Wakfu: How I'd Fix Aurora

No, the world is not ending. But I understand your bafflement.

How come I, probably one of the biggest Aurora haters out there, have anything positive to say about her?

Well, the truth is that I never found it too hard to make her a more compelling character. Granted, no matter the route the show chose, I may have never liked her. You see, I can be quite the rabid stan and Amalia is my bias. I was never going to take kindly to a woman that was introduced seeing and treating my fave as little more than a political pawn for her own gain. Especially one who was intended to be bad news all along.

But I digress.

My point is that canon Aurora is simply insufferable and two-dimensional. A glorified background character with one very particular purpose whom the writers chose to give more "relevance" to without actually knowing what to do with her.

She and her father are easily the most despicable characters in this entire franchise, and it's us, the audience, that have to pay for it by having them and their machinations constantly "haunt" the already flawed writing of The Great Wave.

Aurora doesn't work simply because she isn't a character; but a caricature of a villain. She doesn't actually have any traits or complexity, she's just terrible because she's Amalia's main and most personal opponent and ToT can't be bothered to give anything related to Amalia that isn't a man any real depth.

But the truth of the matter is that Aurora's character is very easy to fix. Just make her more interesting and give her some better-balanced traits that don't reduce her to "overgrown spoiled brat on a power-trip." Better yet, canon actually gives us plenty to work with. They just don't do anything with it.

So here's how I'd write Aurora. Keep in mind, this is with the objective of keeping her as an antagonist for the Great Wave. So she will still be villainous to different degrees, but at least she won't be as flat. I have three alternatives on how I'd write her: one in a more positive light, the other two keeping her more unsavoury aspects from canon, but actually exploring her character.

And without further ado, let's dive in.

Not to play devil's advocate, but when you think about it, Yugo becoming king of the Sadida was pretty much set in stone long before season 4.

Remember?

The Kickstarter featured a portal-ridden Sadida Kingdom, and their throne room was clearly located in the royal palace. Which means that even in the original script for season 4, Sadida and Eliatropes would end up uniting one way or another.

So, rather than it coming completely out of nowhere, it'd be more accurate to say we're mad because season 4 killed Amalia's entire family, and because it happened right as Armand became more likeable, which is always a cheap tactic.
