“Listen, there was no need to lie to Toph because I didn't tell her anything. Even now, I only say things that are true when she's around—that you're recovering, that it's best if they give you space, stuff like that. The virus story? I waited until I could catch the guys alone and told them about it. They're the ones who spoke to Toph…”
“...and because they believed your excuse, she couldn't sense any lie,” Katara finishes his trail of thought. Eyes narrowed, she stares at Zuko as though discovering a new edge of him. “That's...strangely devious of you, Zuko.”
Pride flutters within his chest.

Comfort and pain mix in The Block's second chapter: Hurt For Me (read here!). This is the healing, the care, and the embers of what's to come.

Avatar AU where Aang stays in the iceberg and Katara is mistakenly believed to be the Avatar after she “earthbends” a rock by moving the ice inside it.

Instead of telling the truth and letting everyone down, she and Sokka pull on an elaborate charade and go on a journey to convince the world that the Avatar is back.

Sokka was initially against the idea, thinking it’s crazy, but he got onboard anyway because it’s his little sister and he can’t let her go out into the world alone and put a target on herself.

After they started, he got super into the idea and started crafting an elaborate backstory for her Airbending predecessor, and devising ways for her to fake-bend the other elements.

The Road to Ba Sing Se. I love it.

Bumi agrees to teach her because he is pretty sure she’s a reincarnation of him

Sokka: But… you’re still alive.

Bumi: So is the real Avatar. I think we can bend the rules of reincarnation a bit.

Zuko still gets a redemption arc and switches sides.  Only after he joins Team Avatar does he learn that Katara is not, in fact, the avatar.  By this point he’s already committed so screw it he’s teaching a waterbender how to fake-firebend now.

That’s very in-character because Aang never wanted to be the Avatar anyway.

Sokka after learning the real Avatar was 20 minutes from his home village the whole time:

She respects Katara a lot more as a fake Avatar than she did when when she thought she was the real one (which is none).

Katara always making a pot of tea before meditating and ‘airbending’, because she’s figured out that if the humidity is high enough, she can move it and it looks like airbending.

Zuko behind a rock with a cauldron, desperately blowing flmes under it to keep it steamy.

Sokka over there 👉 clowning around to distract everyone, as Katara calls out her earthbending moves and Toph is windmilling away to keep up.

And that one desert town where Katara couldn’t find water except in one place, and they still talk about how the Avatar Herself showed up and invented Cabbagebending one day.

not wanting to be outdone by the benders in the gang, sokka invents the flamethrower, the supersoaker, the leaf blower, and the concept of throwing rocks at people

this is canon. to me.

wait did anyone draw this already

“Oh he would’ve taken lightning for anyone!” Imagine your friend takes a fucking bullet to the chest to protect you and some weirdo is in your ear saying he’s just selfless like that and he’d do it for any of your other friends so, you know, his sacrifice is not actually a testament to the bond you share with him and the love you have for each other as people and actually you’re not worth protecting as an individual person with a relationship to him yourself, you’re just a stand in for Anyone Ever so that he can prove he’s a Good Guy.

“They went on one revenge mission for her mom!” Imagine the person who betrayed you once wants to make it right and prove to you how much you matter to him because he sees how much you’re hurting so he takes you on a cathartic journey to help you heal from the deepest trauma you’ve ever experienced and checks in with you the entire time to make sure you’re doing okay mentally yet he doesn’t expect your forgiveness in return, he just wants you to heal in whatever way you can and to know that he supports you no matter what and some freak is in your ear flippantly calling it a revenge mission that doesn’t really have a bearing on the trajectory of your relationship with him while also downplaying the growth you personally experienced from it.

“She’s like his replacement for Azula and she treats him like Sokka!” Imagine there’s this guy that you have an inexplicable connection with who is a lot like your dead ex and you guys are mistaken as a couple multiple times and you get progressively more flustered each time someone does that and then there’s an absolute dunderhead in your ear saying he sees you as a replacement for his sister who he’s been pitted against his entire life by their abusive father and that you actually treat him like you treat your literal biological brother who you raised and who also raised you even though you know what this boy’s lips feel like under your thumb.

I think the most hilarious place to put Post-Canon Sokka would have been the university at Ba Sing Se. I think he would have made a great unhinged professor. Also, in true Sokka fashion, he should have completely dodged fame. Momo is more famous than he is.

He wants to demonstrate to the class how this thing called electricity works, so he's going to be bringing in a Firebender, so everybody be cool, we're all friends here... and in walks Princess Azula of the Fire Nation. One-time conqueror of the city. One of the students is currently writing an essay on how her brief rule of the city affected fruit trade. She says she considers the class to still be her subjects as she doesn't acknowledge any pretenders to any of her thrones, but for now you're exempted from bowing and "Your Highness" will do. It's a really interesting lecture.

"Okay, guys - hey, listen up, everyone - I won't be here next week, me and Aang are going to-" yeah right, sure, Professor Sokka knows the Avatar. Except, of course, the Avatar walks in sheepishly and says that Appa might have gotten into Sokka's hybrid crops, and then you all have to sit there and watch your professor chase the Avatar around with a sword.

One postgrad student is specializing in Water Tribe Cultures. She's currently studying the massive cultural shift that happened in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of the war - oh, and Professor, I absolutely know that you're from the Southern Water Tribe, but it's just that the shift started with Master Katara, and of course I don't think that every person from the South knows one another haha it's just that I need to ask her some questions and I thought maybe you could help me write a letter or write a letter of introduction or...

Sokka looks at her blankly and goes "yeah, she's my sister. KATARA!" which is followed by a faint answering "fuck you!" from Somewhere and to the horror/elation of our postgrad, Master Katara bursts in and is promptly beaned in the head with a rock by Professor Sokka. Her brother. her hero and her professor are siblings and currently brawling on the floor.

The 300 level poli-sci final exam at Ba Song Se University is infamous for the airship question. It's an essay question, worth a whole 10 points on a 60 point exam, asking for the primary influences that led to airship technology no longer being used for military purposes after its initial introduction by the Fire Nation during the day of the comet. No matter how the rest of the test changes it's always on the exam, and no one ever gets more than 9/10 on it. Doesn't matter how thorough your knowledge, how compelling and in-depth your essay, how many brilliantly sourced paragraphs you manage to frantically scratch out before the exam period ends. Nine out of ten, never more, with exactly one exception.

Professor Sokka.

Apparently he audited the course when he was originally a student at the university, a few years after the war, and submitted the only response to ever get a perfect score on the airship question during the first year it was included in the exam.

On a dare, you ask if he still has his exam so you can see his record holding essay, and to your surprise he does and he obliges. It's five words long, but only if you include the source as well.

Indicate the primary cause(s) that prevented the pursuit of military airship technology after the hundred year war, with sources. (10 points)
"AIRSHIP SLICE!!" (1)

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

Imagine you're a big wrestling fan. You follow this one really dominant wrestler and you absolutely love her. You keep up with all the drama and you're super invested until one week there's just Bomb after Bomb.

First your fave dominates an event - duh, obviously, she's the best. Then during the part of the show where the announcer is like "anybody in the audience want to challenge her for a fat stack of cash", somebody actually does. (Obviously a tourist.) It's some kid wearing like a beginner outfit from a McDojo... and he actually wins? And gets the cash! And then the event just ends!?

You're buzzing. It's clear that this is like a storyline or something. You can't wait for next week's show. Except that there isn't one, because - as you find out through the gossip mill - your fave was actually the local billionaires' daughter who was competing in secret. And also kayfabe might not exist. And now she's gone and the billionaire is blaming a demigod (who's back from the dead? I guess?) for kidnapping her.

So, how come that means no show this week or possibly ever? Well, the billionaire hired the promoter (and a random McDojo sensei) to go after the demigod to get back his daughter (your fave wrestler!) and the guy just... packed up his entire promotion and left.

Some months later the war that's been going on since your great-grandfathers days ends. You go to a peace parade. And there she is: Toph Beifong, the Blind Bandit, giving the new Fire Lord a noogie.

Insane fucking storyline.

Jet from atla is so funny bc like, he's fighting zuko and taunting him being like "bet you wanna use some fire instead of those swords, dont u fireboy" which is a funny thing to say to a guy who is clearly very eager to fight using swords

someone pointed out (1) time how big of an a-hole move it would have seemed like for jet to accuse the kid with the giant visible burn scar on his face of fire bending.

not only was zuko very clearly eager to fight using swords, i'm betting several members of that crowd were also eager to see zuko kick jet's ass with said swords

Epic tag discourse going on here

# There is no good conclusion to come to about Zuko’s scar.

This is the truth. Zuko’s scar is too carefully placed and too old to be anything other than the act of a firebender deliberately burning a child. A child who would have been held or restrained in some way for the damage to be so contained.

That’s the sort of thing that once the tea shop patrons realized that, it didn’t matter where “Li” was from, only that he never be forced to go back.
