author's note: this was a request!
You barely got the front door to your apartment opened when you suddenly herd noise coming from the living room. A choir of high pitched mews and the soft rustling of cardboard.
"Clark?" You called out as you shut the front door and locked it, kicking your shoes off and hanging your coat up. "What's all that noise?"
"Oh, hey honey!" A sheepish voice called out from the living room. "Uhm.. just don't be mad, okay?"
You dropped your keys in the entryway bowl and put your purse down before making your way toward the living room. "Clark? What did you-"
You stopped dead in your tracks, taking in the scene in front of you.
Sitting right in the middle of the living room on the rug was your husband, the man of steel, the symbol of hope, the man capable of moving mountains, looking down at the little ball of fur in his hands with hearts in his eyes.
He was still in his full Superman uniform, sitting cross-legged on the floor. There was a cardboard box nearby and minus the little kitten in his hands, there was four tiny little kittens swarming him.
One calico kitten was frantically trying to scale up his arm, digging it's tiny claws into his suit with little to no success. There was a fluffy little black cat who was fast asleep in Clark's lap, curled up happily and purring. A tiny ginger kitten was currently playing with his cape behind him. There was also a little tortoiseshell kitten who was more interested in playing with a scrap piece of paper on the floor than trying to scale the man of steel.
He was holding a tiny ragdoll kitten, carefully cupping it in his hands and bringing it up to his face. The kitten mewed softly and tapped it's pink little nose against his as it sniffled him, causing Clark to smile.
You cleared your throat since he momentarily forgot that you came home. He froze before slowly turning his head in your direction, looking like a giant golden retriever who got caught red handed with a stolen shoe.
"Well? Care to explain why our apartment is now a petting zoo?" You asked but you were trying hard to hold back the smile that was threatening to break free. You really couldn't be mad at him when he was holding all those cute fur babies.
"They were in a cardboard box in an alley way and I found them during one of my patrols," Clark offered quickly, his voice softening so he wouldn't spook the kittens. "Someone just left them there. They were all alone and it's supposed to storm tonight and all the shelters are closed. I couldn't leave them there."
You crossed your arms, trying to keep you expression stern but failing, a small smile tugging at the corners of your lips. "Clark, you brought an entire litter of stray kittens home."
"Yeah but I brought them to you. You know more about cats than I do, and you love cats. You know how to take care of them properly. And we don't have to keep them, we can drop them off at a shelter tomorrow morning, I promise! I just don't want them to end up on the streets again." He looked up at you pleadingly.
The ragdoll kitten in his hands let out a small mew and rubbed it's little face up against Clark's nose. You giggled softly as you watched them. "I'm not going to throw them out on the streets, Clark. I'm not a monster."
You sat down on the floor with him, picking up the small ginger kitty. "Tomorrow morning we can go shopping for cat stuff, make sure we have all the essentials and then we'll have to make a vet appointment." You said distractedly as you kissed the kitten's head.
He looked at you hopefully. "Wait, really? We can keep them? All of them?"
You shrugged your shoulders. "Like you said, I love cats. So do you clearly so, why not? I think it could make our lives a little fuller to keep these little fur babies around."
He gave you a massive smile before leaning in to kiss you softly. The kittens in your hands mewed, causing you to pull away, a soft chuckle escaping past your lips.
"You're so incredible." He murmured softly.
"Me? You're the one that saved the kittens." You laughed. "You're the incredible one." You set the ginger kitty down, watching it pounce playfully on one of the other kittens. "Although since you brought them home, I'm leaving you in charge of picking up the essentials tonight like food and a little box."
"Fair enough. Although, can you help me out? I'm pretty sure the calico kitten got lost under my cape." He laughed.
You chuckled as you shook your head. Your lives were about to become very interesting.
