Academic rivals.

That was how everyone described the relationship between you and Draco Malfoy.

The two of you had been competing for top marks for so long that you couldn't even remember when it started.

It wasn't always just about having the highest marks though, it seemed like it was about everything. Like who finished an assignment first, answered the question first in class, who gained the most praise from their professor for their hard work.

Of course, this rivalry consisted of banter, though it wasn't always obvious. Sometimes it was quieter and as simple as a smirk, a prideful glance across the classroom, whispered remarks, subtle eye-rolls.

It was playful and fun in a way, for you at least, and you never actually had any ill-feelings toward Draco. Of course there were actual times when he really did make you annoyed but you still didn't hate him, even if you pretended that you did.

It seemed like Draco, though, genuinely disliked you, but that just made it all the more fun. You enjoyed making him angry.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

In Defense Against the Dark Arts, you shared a desk with one of your friends while Draco sat a couple feet away at the desk next to the two of you.

Today, it seemed like DADA would never end, especially with the Professor droning on and on. Nevertheless, you and Draco continued to pay full attention, making sure not to miss a thing.

Professor Umbridge's eyes were sharp as she spoke, but you didn't seem to realize, nor care, when you raised your hand when you noticed a factual mistake in her ongoing lecture.

"Excuse me, Professor?" You asked graciously. "In the most respectful way possible, I believe that you made a mistake regarding -"

You don't even get the chance to finish before she cuts you off, walking closer to your desk. "Thank you, dear. But you're wrong." Your face flushed at her words, feeling embarrassed. "See, sweetheart, this is my class meaning I am your professor, therefore what I say and do goes."

"But-" You start but she cuts you off again.

"There you go, trying to argue with me now. You know, I find your actions and your attitude towards me to be very rude." She taps her fingers on your desk now. "Detention for you. Tonight, perhaps. Maybe then you'll understand how to respect authority." She says before turning around and continuing her lesson.

Your stomach dropped and you internally groaned. You could feel Draco's eyes on you, but you couldn't look at him, you just knew he was going to rub this in your face later.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Later that evening, after dinner in the Great Hall, you slowly walked with your friends in the halls before splitting off in the direction of Professor Umbridge's office.

Your head hung low as you dreadfully knocked on her door before opening it and making your way inside.

"Good evening, dear. Sit." She said, she seemed excited in a way but she still held an assertive tone.

You sat down, looking around at her oddly decorated room, but honestly you should've expected nothing less.

"You're going to be doing some lines for me today." You nod, reaching for your quill. "Oh no, not your own. You'll be using a special one of mine."

She gets up, heading to where you are sat and placing the quill in front of you on your little desk. "Now, I want you to write, 'I must not disrespect authority.'"

You resist the urge to roll your eyes and instead, as politely as you can, ask, "How many times, Professor?"

"As long as it takes for the message to sink in."

You nod before realizing, "Professor, may I have some ink for this quill?"

"You won't be needing any, dear." She responds before she turns around, her back facing yours.

You clench your jaw, as you pick up the quill. You start to write on the fresh piece of parchment in front of you. After finishing the first line, you begin to notice a weird burning sensation in your opposite hand.

You look over at it, sucking in a sharp breath at the pain, the words 'I must not disrespect authority' being carved and branded into your skin.

The silence in the room stretched as you could only stare at the words etched into your hand. Umbridge notices, walking over to you and leaning closer.

"Sorry, Professor, I'll continue writing." You manage to get out and apology before any words could even come out of her mouth.

"That's right. Because you know, deep down, that you deserve to be punished, isn't that right?"

You could only swallow and nod, looking back down at that parchment beneath your hands and continuing to write, despite your urge to scream, both in pain and anger at her stupidity.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

You'd written a whole page full of words in your own blood before she finally released you, ensuring that your learned your lesson and that you promise to never do it again.

You shut her door, only walking a few steps before stopping. You tilt your head down, looking at your throbbing, bleeding hand.

You blinked hard, trying to usher your tears away. You absolutely refused to cry, especially here in the middle of a dark hallway.

You slid your sleeve down, attempting to cover your hand a little, before you continued walking, needing to get to your dorm quickly.

You were barely paying attention as you turned the corner that would lead to the Slytherin common room. You bumped into someone, knocking yourself off your feet and landing on the floor.

You look up to see Draco. You froze, because of course out of anyone, it just had to be him.

"Well, you're awfully clumsy tonight, aren't you?" He smirks at you.

You were exhausted. You had no energy to go back and forth with him, you didn't even let an eye roll slip.

A flick of confusion covers his face but he quickly covers it up with his cocky demeanor. "Well, what's crawled up your ass? Aw, is it because someone got detention for being a such a bad student?"

You still don't react. You just quickly stand back up brushing the dust off your clothes, your sleeves swishing around, along with a drop of blood falling to the floor, though you didn't notice.

Draco's eyes drop down to the floor, noticing it immediately. Then they lift back up towards your hand, him now noticing the red marks present.

"You're bleeding."

You freeze for just a second, your eyes widening. You quickly pull your sleeve back down and move to walk past him, but Draco had no plans on letting you go.

He reaches forward and grabs your wrist before you have the chance to escape.

"No, Malfoy. Stop -"

He turns your hand over, seeing the drops of blood leaking from the words that had been carved into your skin only minutes before.

Draco was still, his chest tightening.

A moment of silence passes before either of you speak.

"What the hell did she do to you?" He's angry, but he's not loud.

You tried to pull away. "It was just detention. A punishment." You tug at your wrist again when he doesn't let go. "I deserved it, it's fine. Don't make it any worse, just let me go, please."

Draco lets out a breathe that sounds almost shaky. "No." He looks up. "There's no way you can convince me that you're fine. Come on. You're coming with me."

You don't get the chance to argue or protest because he's already dragging you down the hallway.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Draco's dorm was silent as the two of you entered. You barely had a chance to look around as he pulled you into his bathroom and shut the door behind him.

"Sit." He commanded, referencing towards the sink. You just stared at him, eyes wide. He finally looked up at you, his eyes and voice softening. "Please."

You huffed but listened, lifting yourself and settling on the counter next to the sink.

Draco turned on the faucet, grabbing a clean cloth and running it under the warm water.

"Can I see your hand?" He asked quietly. You hesitated but slowly lifted your hand up.

He pulled your sleeve back and when he saw the bloody cuts marked into your skin, his jaw tightened.

He starts to wipe at the blood and you wince at the heightened stinging sensation. "Shit, sorry." He softens his grip, wiping the cloth as gently as he could across your skin.

"You don't have to do this." You say sincerely, biting down on your lip, trying to distract yourself from the pain. Draco looks up noticing, a deep frown forming on his face.

"You know you didn't deserve this, right?" He starts, not addressing your previous statement. "That woman is fucking insane, she shouldn't be allowed to do stuff like this."

All you could do was shrug, weakly.

"Why are you even helping me?"

Draco ignores you, reaching into the cabinet next to you for a bandage. He carefully starts wrapping the bandage around your hand.

Finally, he speaks. "It's not a big deal."

You scoff playfully. "Right because the Draco Malfoy would willingly patch up one of the people he hates the most at Hogwarts. Of course that makes sense."

"I'm just trying to make sure my competition is still in good shape to beat." He looks up, feeling lighter now, a small smirk growing at his lips.

You couldn't help but laugh at his words. "It's funny that you think you'd win, but sure, whatever makes you happy."

He lets out a small chuckle. A few seconds later and he'd finally finished wrapping your hand up. He mutters a small healing charm, to alleviate the pain and guarantee a quick recovery.

"All done."

You flex your hand, testing it. Noticing that it doesn't hurt as much as it did before.

"Thank you. I appreciate it, truly."

"Of course." He smiles but his expression turns serious. "You never should've been treated like that. You didn't deserve it. That's not a form of 'discipline' anyone, especially you, should have to endure."

You nod, unable to form words as Draco seems to be staring into your soul, ensuring that you understood his words.

Some kind of tension seems to rise and so you can't help but tease him to avoid embarrassing yourself. "Careful, you almost sound like you actually care about me, Malfoy."

His lips twitch forming a slight smirk and he playfully rolls his eyes. "Yeah, of course. We wouldn't want that now would we?"

You smile, then realizing how close the two of you were to each other. You're face flushed, just barely. You quickly jump up off the counter, opening the door leading to his room.

He follows after you before you stop at his door, the one that leads out into the hallway. "Well I guess I owe you then, Malfoy." You say turning around to face him again.

He leans closer, his face just inches away from yours, a small smug look on his face. "Yeah, I guess you do."

You're stomach flipped slightly and you smiled.

"Goodnight, Malfoy." You opened the door, walking out.

"Goodnight, sweetheart."

As you walked down the hall, towards your own dorm room now, you could still feel his eyes on you.

You didn't turn back to look at him, just looked down at your bandaged hand and despite the cause of it, you couldn't help but get this warm feeling in your chest.

Maybe Draco Malfoy wasn't as bad as you thought he was.

Theo was always there for you, with you.

Until one day he wasn't.

You didn't understand why things changed. But the friendship between you and Theo had just gone silent.

He stopped walking you to class. Stopped saving you a seat, really he didn't even try to sit near you. And he'd barely even spoken to you, let alone looked at you lately.

At first, you thought that maybe it was just a coincidence. That he was busy. That he had other things to do and worry about.

But when a few days had passed without him, you knew it wasn't nothing. That something was wrong.

You were noticing his absence, and it was affecting you more than you'd like to admit.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

A few days earlier, you were in the courtyard leaning against a wall while your friend stood next to you. The normal chatter and spread of gossip from other students surrounded the ongoing conversation between the two of you.

Though, you were only half-listening to your friend as she rambled on, distracted by the thoughts roaming your head.

"You've zoned out again, haven't you?" She observes.

"No, I've been listening." You respond, which was really only a half-lie.

"You have. This is like your third time this week zoning out during our conversations."

You playfully roll your eyes, muttering. "Maybe I'm just thinking."

"Oh, I can tell." She starts, a smirk pinching at her cheeks and a knowing look on her face. "But the real question is who are you thinking about?"

You groan. "You're ridiculous. You know I don't think about anyone in that way."

"Sure." She narrows her eyes at you. "Then why were you staring at Theodore in Charms today?"

You froze, knowing she was right, that she had caught you. That didn't stop you from trying to deny it though. "I wasn't staring. I just simply looked at him, you know? We're friends. Friends can do that."

"You know you're a terrible liar. Besides, I already caught you. You were absolutely staring at him."

You sigh, knowing you had no choice but to explain now. "He's a good friend. And he's just different."

Your friend leans closer, waiting for you to say more. "Go on."

You shake your head, shrugging slightly. "I don't know. He's interesting. He's funny. He's sweet, too. He's always there for me and he actually listens to me when I speak. I can't help but really like being around him. I feel good about myself, like I'm finally enough for someone, whenever I'm with him."

"Oh my gosh." Your friend says, her eyes widened.

You tilt your head, confused. "What? Did I say something bad?"

Nearby, Theodore had entered the courtyard.

Though he stopped walking when he heard your voice. He hadn't meant to stop, to eavesdrop, but he couldn't help but slow when it came to you.

She points at you. "You like him."

Your eyebrows furrow. "I didn't say that."

"Yet you didn't deny it." She noticed you hesitating. "Come on, just admit it. I've already noticed, I've seen all the signs, and then the way you just spoke about him. It's clear. You like him."

"Okay maybe. A little." You quietly say, yet still loud enough for Theo to hear from where he was standing. He freezes when those words leave your mouth. His chest felt heavy. He turned and walked away before he could hear you say anything else.

He didn't know who you were talking about. But he knew one thing. That it wasn't about him.

Since Theo didn't stay, he missed the words that followed your confession.

"But Theo would never see me in that way. I know he wouldn't. He'll only ever see me as a friend. He's such a good friend too. You know, he's nice, kind, friendly, everything. He's truly one of the best friends I've ever had and I don't want to ruin what we have."

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Later that day, you were walking in the halls and you saw that Theo was just a few yards ahead of you, so you jogged to catch up to him.

"Hey, Theo! I didn't see you after class earlier. I wanted to ask if you'd like to hang out for a bit later?"

Theo looked over his shoulder at you and gave you a small smile, yet his chest tightened as he looked at you. He wanted to say yes but the words he heard earlier replayed in his head.

'You like him.'

That's why he lied. "I have something else I need to do, sorry." He said quietly, barely looking you in the eyes, before turning away and heading down the halls.

All you could do was watch him walk away, a feeling of unease settling in your stomach.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

The next day, he didn't sit next to you in class.

You watched him walk to the opposite side of the room, not even glancing your way.

You felt a small pang in your chest as you watched him, as you looked at the empty seat beside you.

After class, you tried to catch up with him but he was the first one out the door, and by the time you finally made it out of the classroom you could no longer see his figure in the hallway.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

The following night, Theo was in the common room, attempting to read a book. He kept getting distracted by his thoughts and especially by the guilt he felt for ignoring you like this.

Blaise noticed. "You look terrible, miserable even."

"I'm fine. Just drop it." Theo rubbed at his temple, his eyes shut and eyebrows furrowed.

"It's about her isn't it? Don't think I haven't noticed the way you've been acting lately. The way you've been clearly avoiding her." Blaise paused before continuing, softly. "Did something happen?"

They sat there in silence before Theo finally answered. "I heard something the other day. Something I probably shouldn't have found out." He took a deep breathe, finally looking at Blaise. "She likes someone else. And I just... I don't know but there's no way the person she likes could be me. So, I figured it'd be best to give her space, to stop myself from wanting more and ruining what we already have."

"You don't have to push her away, you know?" Blaise started, trying to reason with Theo. But it was too late. Theo had already decided. He was going to distance himself, quietly.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

It didn't take long for you to notice. Theo's absence had been loud.

Days had gone by and by this point you were fed up. You wanted to get answers from him as to why he was acting this way, so that's what you set out to do.

It was after class one day, and you had seen Theo lingering at the end of the hallway.

You're heart was pounding heavily as you walked closer.

"Theo?" You called out once you were close enough. "Can we talk? Please?"

He froze, then looked at you, his once sharp eyes softening.

"Why are you avoiding me?" You ask, your voice sad and quiet.

There's a stretch of silence. You watch as Theo's lips press into a thin line and he rubbed a hand through his hair.

"It's just... easier this way." He finally says.

You tilt your head at him confused. You opened your mouth to say something more, but then a voice from down the hallway called his name.

Theo took that as his escape from your confrontation. "I've got to go. See you later."

You stood there, your eyes blurring. You were frustrated, hurt.

"'Easier this way?' What does that even mean?" You mutter to yourself.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Later that evening, you sat alone in the Slytherin common room, curled up on one of the couches closest to the fire.

You had planned on journaling that night, yet your notebook was long forgotten next to you as you stared at the fire, your mind lost in a sea of thoughts.

You fidgeted absentmindedly with your robe, with your hair, with the fabric of the couch. Anything you could get your hands on really, in an attempt to distract yourself or maybe just to ease your mind. Whatever the reason was, it wasn't working.

You kept replaying the moment from earlier over and over. Your thoughts were turning frantic.

Did I do something wrong? Did I upset him? Annoy him? Am I too much for him? Does he hate me? Does he like someone else?

You pulled your knees up to your chest, burying your face in your hands, your stomach twisting as your thoughts came out like daggers.

Suddenly the mostly quiet common room was too loud for you. The distant voices of others, the laughter, even the crackling from the fire was just too much.

You tried to calm your mind, to breathe normally. But then you noticed a shadow hovering next to you. You look up to see no other than Blaise.

He was leaning back in one of the armchairs beside the couch you were sat in. He made eye contact with you and the two of you just stared at each other quietly.

"Are you okay?" He finally broke the silence.

You sighed deeply before answering. "I'm fine." You had whispered, though your voice was no where near convincing.

Blaise's eyes softened, just slightly, as he studied you. "You've been thinking about Nott haven't you?"

Your throat caught and you suddenly felt small. All you could do was nod your head.

He nodded back, already knowing. "I'm assuming you've noticed then. Him acting weird, pulling back."

You swallowed, unable to meet his eyes feeling ashamed for some odd reason. "I just don't understand why."

"Because he likes you." Blaise answers almost immediately. "A lot. And that scares him. He thinks you like someone else. So him giving you space is his way of protecting himself and you."

Your eyes widen at the confession.

He cares about me. He actually likes me back. You think to yourself.

"Thank you, Blaise." You say softly, once gathering your thoughts.

You then get up, heading to walk out of the common room. "Where are you going?" Blaise asks.

"To find Theo."

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

It felt like hours passed as you looked for him. You almost gave up but you had one last place to look. The astronomy tower.

The air was sharp against your cheeks when you finally reached the top. You didn't care though, the only thing you were focused on was the figure leaning against the railing a few feet ahead of you.

"Theo." You called softly, your voice trembling just slightly.

He turned slowly, his eyes meeting yours. This time though he made no effort to look away.

"We need to talk, Theo, it's long overdue." You step closer, your heart hammering in your chest.

He nodded, though hesitantly.

His hand tightened around the railing, as if anchoring himself. "I know I've been distant, avoiding you even." He started, his voice cracking slightly. "I was scared. I just didn't want to mess anything up. I didn't want to make a fool of myself. I thought it would be easier for both of us this way. Especially knowing that you like someone else."

Your eyebrows furrow with confusion. "Wait, what?"

"You don't have to lie. I overheard you, the other day in the courtyard when you were talking to your friend." His voice shaky now. You can see a tear threatening to escape his eyes. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to listen in or anything but I heard you. When you said you liked someone else. And after, I thought that if I stayed close to you I would ruin everything. That's why I've been trying to keep my distance lately."

"Oh, Theo." You whisper, softly. "I don't like anyone else."

"What? You don't?" His eyes were wide, confused, as he looked at you.

"No, Theo." You breathed. "I was talking about you that day. I like you. It was always you."

He let out a small smile at your words. But his smile quickly faded when he realized what he'd done, how his actions had affected you. "Fuck, I'm so sorry. I didn't know. I didn't mean to hurt you. I never meant to. I just thought... Fuck, I'm an absolute idiot." He held his head in his hands, ashamed.

"No, no, no Theo it's okay. It's not your fault." You say, now standing in front of him as you try to make him look at you again. "Just be with me now. Be honest."

He looked into your eyes, seeing the loving look on your face. He let out a shaky laugh. "Right, honest. I can do that." He paused then, his face turning serious again, grabbing your hand and holding it in his palms, his thumb rubbing over your knuckles. "I like you. So much. You've always been it for me. And if you'll have me, I promise I won't ever let you go."

You leaned in close, closing the distance between the two of you. Your lips met his softly and the taste of love, relief, and unspoken words were shared.

When you finally pulled away, he kept you close, his forehead resting against yours as he stared deeply into your eyes.

At that moment, Theo knew. He knew that he would finally get to live out his dreams. A future with you in it.

Theodore was observant. Good at reading people.

He noticed things that others didn't. Like the shift in someone's tone or subtle eye rolls people gave.

That's why Theodore realized, too late, that he had messed up. That he had fallen for you.

You were perfect. In Theodore's eyes.

Your hair, your smile, your laugh. Everything.

It started small, him noticing the little things.

He noticed your laugh first. Not just the sound, but the way you leaned forward and slightly covered your mouth with your hand as you did.

He noticed the way your hair bounced when you walked and the way it laid over your shoulder as you settled in your seat or on the couch in the Slytherin common room.

Unfortunately, he also noticed how casually you acted around him. How physical touch from you came so easily, no hesitance.

Like when your shoulder bumped into his as you two walked in the halls together. The way your hand gripped his arm when asking for something or even just to show concern and provide comfort for him. The way you would grab his hand, basically holding it, and forcefully drag him along with you just because you were excited about something.

Even the way you said his name.

Theo.

Not 'Theodore' or 'Nott' like everyone else, just Theo.

He only allowed you to call him that. As if the name belonged to you.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

You were sitting on a couch across from the fire in the Slytherin common room, talking animatedly about something that had happened in Charms to your friends.

Theo was watching, or more like staring at you from across the room. His eyes unblinking, as if he didn't want to miss a single thing, even if he couldn't hear what you were saying.

A pillow suddenly smacked him across the face. Hard.

Theo blinked, coming out of whatever trance he was in, then looked down at the pillow that landed in his lap, confused.

"She's gonna kill you one day, you know."

Theo's head snapped up, following the voice to see Mattheo Riddle smirking at him as he leaned back in his chair. Blaise Zabini was next to him, a grin spread across his face.

Theo scoffed in return, "I don't know what you're on about." He moved the pillow out of his lap, revealing the book that was under it. The one he had supposedly been reading, though he was watching you instead.

You were laughing, with your friends. You weren't loud by any means yet Theo glanced at you again before quickly looking back down at his book.

Mattheo snorted.

"Nott, you've been staring at that girl for the last 10 minutes."

"No, I haven't." Theo replied, not looking up.

"14 minutes actually." Blaise corrected, clearly amused.

"You both are imagining things. You two just mind your own business, will you?" Theo shakes his head, turning the page in his book even though he wasn't actually reading it.

Mattheo and Blaise shared a laugh. Mattheo nudged Blaise, "You see it too, right?"

"Oh absolutely. There's no denying it."

Theo ignores them, his eyes up, moving to follow you once more.

Blaise follows his gaze, then turns back to say, "If you stare any harder she might explode, Nott. So just admit it. That you're interested in her."

"I'm not staring. And are you two done?" Theodore's eyes snap back to the two Slytherin boys sitting in front of him.

He tries not to gaze your way again, awaiting their response, but he can't help it. This time though, you suddenly glanced over and your eyes met his.

You smiled. You smiled at him. Theodore froze for a second. You then lift your hand, giving a small wave. He snaps out of it and gives you a nod in return with an unknowingly large smile on his face.

The two Slytherins with Theo watched the interaction. "Oh you're so done for." Blaise laughed.

"Absolutely hopeless." Mattheo nodded. "He's totally in love with her."

"Whatever." Theo said turning back to face his book again, knowing they were right but he just didn't want to tell them.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Theodore never did officially tell his friends that he had a crush on you. A big one. He had just stopped denying it whenever they said something about it. Because the boys, Mattheo, Draco, Blaise, and Lorenzo, they all knew. They could tell just by the way Theodore acted when it came to you.

Whenever you were around Theo would get visibly nervous and sometimes even shy. Especially, when you complimented him.

"I like your hair. It looks so soft." You had said one time. And it was like Theo's brain just completely shut off. He was flustered and you hadn't even really done anything. Somehow though, he managed to get out a small "thanks." For the rest of that day, he could barely get his words out, as if malfunctioning.

They noticed that he even started to save you a seat whenever he knew you were gonna be around.

Like one time at dinner, Draco had tried to sit in the open seat next to Theo. But Theo immediately put his bag on the seat. "This seat is taken."

Draco's eyebrows furrowed. "By who?" Theo doesn't answer and Draco just moves to sit in the seat across from Theo, giving their friends at the table a confused look.

A couple minutes later, you show up. "Hey Theo, can I sit next to you?"

Theo quickly moves his bag and then smiles looking up at you, "Of course."

The rest of their friends shared a knowing look.

They also noticed that it seems as though Theo remembers everything about you, not in a creepy way of course. But he remembers the things you say, even when you think no one is paying attention or even when you think that what you're saying is unimportant.

He remembers your favorite things like your favorite class and your favorite candy. He remembers how you like your tea. The time and place you like to study. How stressed you get before exams. He especially notices when you're sad or quiet, and he always does his best to talk to you and cheer you up.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

You began to notice too, the way Theo acted.

Like how he almost always walked you to class, how he always tried to save you a seat, how he always helped with your assignments or even just helped you study.

But in your mind, in your thought process, you thought he was just being nice. That you would do the same thing for your own friends. That he was just being a good friend to you.

But what you didn't realize is that Theo only acted this way towards you. He wasn't even this nice to his own friends.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

One night, Theo was lying in bed just staring at the ceiling.

He was zoned out. Thinking about you. About the future.

He wondered what your wedding would look like. Your future home. Your future kids.

Would they have your eyes? He thought.

His smirk?

Your smile?

God, he really hoped so. He couldn't wait.

He imagined your future home. You sitting next to him in the living room reading your book and sipping your tea, wearing one of his sweaters.

Next, he saw a little girl running across the living room, jumping into your arms. You pulled her closer, hugging her close and comforting her.

Another kid ran into the room, this time though, it was a young boy. He ran to Theo, jumping into his lap and giving him a big hug.

You looked up at Theo, him already looking at you, and you smiled. He couldn't help but smile back.

You would be such a good mother. Theo had thought that night.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

That next day, Theo was extremely happy. Just the thought of you had him in a good mood.

"You're smiling." Mattheo pointed out. Him, Theo, and their friends were sitting in the Slytherin common room just hanging out.

"So?" Theo's face was slightly confused but he still couldn't stop smiling.

"You're smiling a lot." Mattheo corrected himself.

"Yeah and you never smile like that either. You're practically glowing." Draco followed.

Theo tried to wipe the smile off his face but he couldn't help it. You were on his mind.

"It's her, isn't it, Nott?" Draco asked when he realized Theo hadn't stopped.

"She laughs at my jokes." Theo said randomly in response, staring into space, as if he was imagining the memory with you.

Draco groaned, while Blaise and Mattheo chuckled.

"Her laugh is beautiful. It's the kind that makes others smile, especially me." Theo continues absentmindedly, not acknowledging the others. "And she's nice. Much nicer than anyone else I know. And she's kind and sweet. It's genuine. She's thoughtful too, she notices things."

All the boys could do was sit and stare at Theo as he spoke. They didn't tease, just stared.

Theo didn't notice as he continued to ramble on. "And her smile, it's gorgeous. She's gorgeous. I swear she lights up every room she walks in, at least for me. And she's always there for everyone. She listens. Not just absentmindedly, no, she actually pays attention and she truly cares. She's sarcastic, funny too. And she's a very smart girl, even if she doesn't always think so. I think she's perfect. In every aspect, you know. She really deserves the world."

"Merlin, he's obsessed." Draco groaned again, shaking his head.

"Am not." Theo muttered. "It's just, how could you not notice her. She's like a dream, absolutely mesmerizing."

"Mate, you're too far gone now." Blaise laughed.

"Yeah. He's absolutely in love with her. Sad part is she probably doesn't even realize despite how obvious he's been."

Theo doesn't respond, having gotten lost in his thoughts about you again. The boys just shake their head in response.

His mind was wandering.

He knew you had no idea. No idea that he thought of you this way, that he thought about a future with you, that he liked you.

Theo didn't care though. Not yet anyway.

Because a couple minutes later when you walked through the Slytherin common room and gave him that beautiful smile of yours, he softly smiled back.

You didn't know. Yet.

But maybe, hopefully, someday you would.

The Hawkins gym was filled with chatter, none of which you paid attention to, and smelt faintly of sweat as people were scattered around, some sitting on cots while volunteers were doing everything they could to help out.

You could feel the stitches on your shoulder and side every time you moved, even just breathing felt uncomfortable.

You gripped harshly at the end of the cot, hissing in pain, as your ribs stung as a nurse helped wrap a bandage and gauze around your stitches to keep them from getting irritated.

Once she was finished she told you, "You should try lie down, just don't move too much and I definitely don't recommend walking right now. I'm gonna go help some others but, first, is there anything else that you need?"

You shook your head, before letting out a small but appreciative thank you.

When she left, you looked back down at your hands, spotting the splotchy blood that remained on your hands and sleeves. You let out a shaky breath and your chest tightened as you couldn't help but think back on what had happened.

The Upside Down, the demobats.

Their teeth.

The screaming.

Eddie. Dead.

You swallowed hard, feeling sick at the thought. You shook your head, as if trying to shake away the dreadful memories, and forced yourself to look up off the ground.

You looked around the gym, spotting Robin helping out at a couple of the volunteer stations. You let a small smile slip as you watched her talking happily to the girl standing next to her.

Then your gaze shifted and you saw him. Steve.

He was also helping out. He was crouched down helping a young girl who looked to have been slightly hurt. You couldn't hear him but you saw his mouth moving and you just knew that he had made some small joke as you looked over at the little girl's face and saw her let out a giggle, her expression less worried now.

You looked back at him. Though he was trying not to show it, you could tell he was tired. Both mentally and physically. But that wouldn't stop him as kept moving and continued to help others wherever he could.

For a second, you looked away, remembering the unresolved argument between the two of you. You still didn't know how to feel. Especially now that the argument seemed so small compared to the devastating events that had just occurred. But you remembered that you can still have feelings, they had just been buried under the exhaustion and grief. That doesn't mean they just disappeared though. You were still hurt.

You glanced back up at him and your eyes met, him already looking at you from across the gym. You saw his expression shift, just slightly. Something like concern, relief, and guilt all at once.

Steve started walking towards you but then stopped, hesitating. Seeing a moment of recollection pass his face. The argument.

You looked away quickly, trying to pretend you were occupied, adjusting the sheet on the cot and softly tracing one of the bandages that could be seen on your shoulder and arm.

When you finally looked at him again, you realized he had stayed where he was. It was as if he knew you wanted some space but he still wanted to be close enough in case you called out for him or even if you just needed help.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

The next couple days were hard for all of you. Everyone was a bit off, but they were still trying their best.

But even then, you had noticed that things seemed to be affecting Dustin the worst.

He was changing.

He was quieter than before, conversations lacking his usual jokes and input.

He held a bad attitude and was more short-tempered now too. Especially with Steve.

Like one night at the Wheeler house, the kids were all spread out around the table in the basement talking peacefully. Dustin was quiet though, his arms crossed, just zoned out staring at a specific spot on the table in front of him.

Nancy and Robin were sitting on the couch while you sat in front of them on the floor and engaged in some small conversation.

Then Steve walked in, his hands full of grocery bags. "Thought you all might be hungry, so I stopped to grab a few things." He said handing out individual bags, though starting off with you.

He had a soft smile on his face as he held eye contact with you, leaning down to give you the bag. His fingertips brushed against yours and you let out a small gasp. You had forgotten how soft his hands felt. He let out a small chuckle at your reaction before pressing his lips against your forehead and whispering quietly for only you to hear, "I love you. So much."

You were surprised. Both at the contact and his words. Yet you still manage to let out a small, "thank you, Steve," as he nodded in response, and then continued to hand off the bags to the others.

You took a peek into the bag and you noticed it had all your favorite snacks and drinks. An involuntary smile tugged at the corner of your mouth. Though it didn't last long when you noticed the interaction occurring between Dustin and Steve.

"A peace offering. I hope you like it." Steve said lightly. You could the see the look of concern, maybe pity too, as he looked at Dustin.

"Thanks." Dustin responded, his voice flat. No emotion. No appreciation. He didn't even look at Steve.

Steve hesitated before trying again. To start a conversation or even just to get something out of Dustin. "Everything good, Henderson?"

"Just fine." He answered quickly, his mouth spreading into a straight line, clearly done with the 'conversation.'

At this point, everyone was silent. Watching. Noticing the tension. Steve just nodded slowly, awkward even, and sighed as he backed off.

Over the next week, it kept happening. The tension getting worse.

No one intervened though. It was just little things, which of course still had meaning to it, but still. It was things like Dustin rolling his eyes whenever Steve spoke, or giving simple one-worded answers with no emotion whatsoever, and he would even swap between ignoring and interrupting Steve during group conversations.

It was never a fight or an argument. Though the tension was building up, like sparks that would eventually erupt into a large, uncontrollable fire.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

You had a feeling the tension would blow up into a big argument, you just didn't know when.

And you were right.

It was late at night, everyone was just hanging around the Wheeler's basement. Though this time you were curled up in a ball on the couch, still wary of your stitches, which had been healing well.

You were exhausted, in all aspects. You hadn't gotten a full nights sleep in what felt like years. You were having trouble sleeping at night and often times when you did fall asleep, you would have the same recurring nightmare, or more like the traumatic memory, of Eddie dying. You woke up crying every single time. The first time it was so bad you had a panic attack.

Tonight on the couch though, you had felt your eyes fluttering shut, seeming like you were going in and out of sleep. But then something in the air thickened, the group was just silent. It seemed like today was just one of those days that was particularly glum compared to others.

Steve shifted in his chair, growing slightly uncomfortable with the silence.

He glanced around. He just wanted to lift up the mood a little, start a small conversation. "So... are we all just gonna sit here and not talk?" You opened your eyes at his words, turning your head towards his direction.

He didn't mean any harm by his words. But something about it just rubbed Dustin the wrong way. He scoffs and shakes his head. Steve frowns. "What?"

Dustin doesn't even look at him when he replies with, "Nothing."

Steve sighs, "Dustin, come on -"

"It's just, you always do that. Act like everything is fine. " Dustin snaps, standing up now. Everyone was watching now. The argument you'd been anticipating had begun.

"As if we all can just move on and forget everything." He pauses for a second. "But things aren't just gonna just go back to normal! Not after everything that's happened." Dustin's voice grows louder. "You have to stop pretending that it's all just perfectly okay."

Steve blinked, his eyebrows furrowed. "I'm not -"

"But you are!" His voice was sharp. "Don't you see, Steve? That we're struggling, that we're not okay. That I'm not okay."

Steve straightens up, his eyebrows raised now as he stands. He doesn't understand where all of this is coming from. "Dustin, hey woah -" Dustin cuts him off again before Steve can even gather his words.

"No, don't you get it? You don't just get over stuff like what happened to us that quick." Dustin exclaims.

"People died, Steve."

The room went still. Steve froze, you all did.

"People died." He repeats. "Eddie died, man."

Your stomach twisted and you could feel the bile well up in your throat at the mention. The memory of the demobats, the screaming and pain, Eddie, the way you held him as he let out his last breaths.

Your hands clenched and your eyes began to sting so you shut them tightly, willing the tears to go away. Trying to shut it all out.

Steve let out a shaky breath, "I know, Dustin. And I'm so -"

"But do you?" Dustin interrupts. "Because it doesn't really seem like it."

"Of course I know, Dustin, and I feel fucking terrible." Steve says, a look of shame and guilt on his face. "But I just, I don't know what you want from me anymore."

"I don't know! Maybe just act like you actually care about us. About how Eddie's gone."

Steve's face twists, "Of course I care! What the hell, Dustin?"

"Then where were you, huh?"

His words hung in the air, the air felt thick.

"That's enough!" You stood up.

They both froze, their heads turned to you. Dustin blinked in what seemed like surprise while Steve looked at you with concern in his eyes.

You took a few stepped towards them before lowly saying, "You guys need to stop. Whatever this is."

"Stop what?" Dustin frowned.

"This!" you gestured between the two of them, shaking your head. "The arguing all the time, the fighting with each other. We shouldn't be acting like this. We should be, if anything, growing closer together, supporting each other. Not picking fights with each other or whatever the hell you two are going."

Dustin tries to argue, "But I'm not picking fights."

"Yes you are, Dustin." You say firmly, but with a slight softness in your tone. Understanding.

"Are you seriously defending him right now? Look, I get that Steve is your boyfriend and all but -"

"Dustin." Your voice was shaky now. You take a deep breath. "You just, you don't get to do that. Throw Eddie's name around like that."

His expression falters. "What, what do you mean?"

"I saw it happen. I saw Eddie die, Dustin." Your throat tightened and your vision was starting to blur. The room felt too tight, too small, too suffocating.

"I was there, you should know this." Your hands were shaking now as you tried to keep it together. "I saw all of it. I saw the demobats, him fighting and screaming for his life. For all of our lives, really."

"And I... I couldn't stop it." You paused. "You have no idea how much I've thought about everything that happened. About what I could've done differently. How I could've helped more. How guilty I feel. Like it's all my fault." Your voice cracked.

"I've been trying so hard to keep it together. To pretend I'm okay, that the guilt isn't eating away at me. But I just can't. I can't do this anymore." Tears are rolling down your cheeks now.

Dustin hesitates before stepping closer, wrapping his arms around you in the form of a hug. "I'm so sorry." He whispers. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to -"

"Dustin, it's okay." You cut him off, rubbing his back trying to provide a sense of comfort. You can't see his face but by the way his shoulders are shaking you can tell that he's crying.

After a few moments, you both calmed down and you pull away from him but grab him by his shoulders and tell him, "I get it. That you're hurt, that you miss him. I do too. But please, you have to remember, we're all here for each other, for you. So please don't shut us out and treat us like we're not anymore. Please."

Dustin nods, sniffling, before saying, "But you have to take the same advice. No more hiding the way you're feeling, even if it isn't pretty."

You let a small chuckle slip, wiping the leftover tears off his face. "I promise."

Dustin smiled and then backed up a few steps, looking at everyone in the room and apologizing, especially to Steve.

He then jokingly grumbled, "God, feelings are weird. I highly don't recommend them."

Robin snorted loudly while the others laughed. The tension from before was fading.

That's how you knew, knew that things we're gonna change. That they would get better eventually.

Everyone engaged in conversation, the mood was brighter now. You smiled at that as you looked around the room, wiping the dried tears off your face.

You glanced at Steve but he was already looking at you. His expression was soft, but it still held something heavy, like regret.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Over the next few days, the group was growing closer than ever before. And the tension had faded.

Dustin was becoming himself again and Robin continued to make her terrible jokes. Everyone was slowly getting lighter.

But there was one thing that hadn't changed. You and Steve still hadn't talked. You wanted space so he gave it to you.

But he was still always there. At some point you started to realize the small gestures he would do for you. As if trying to show that even if you don't want to talk, he still loves you and he's willing to prove that he'll try.

But he never made a big deal out of it. He never cornered you or forced a conversation. Yet whenever your eyes met, there was just something in his eyes that made your chest tighten.

He was giving you the time you needed. He was waiting for you.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

It was late one night. You had just stepped outside the Wheeler house for some air. Maybe also just to watch the stars as you sat in the quiet night with your thoughts.

It had felt like hours went by when you suddenly heard a door creak open.

You didn't need to turn around. You already knew who it was.

You heard footsteps coming closer to you and then you felt the person sit down next to you, but not too close, as if playing it safe.

"Hi." Steve said softly.

You looked over at him and gave him a small smile. You noticed that he looked nervous. You didn't ask though and just turned your head back to look up at the night sky.

Steve didn't talk. Neither did you. But the silence between the two of you wasn't uncomfortable or awkward, it was just there.

Finally, Steve slowly exhaled. "I messed up. Really bad. I feel absolutely terrible and I'm so so sorry. And I know there's nothing I can do or say that will fix what I did."

You looked at him now, your gaze soft.

He looked exhausted. "You were right. About everything." He stared softly into your eyes, guilt was written all over his face.

"I should've fought for you." His voice was quiet but his words were heavy. "I should have. I should've shut down the others whenever they mentioned Nancy and I together. The second it started."

His jaw tightened. "But I didn't. And I'm so sorry." He paused before continuing. "I thought ignoring it would just make it all go away but I know now that it doesn't exactly work like that."

Steve gently but hesitantly grabbed your hand, holding it in his palms. "You've been there for me for so long. Since I was just little 'King Steve,' you've been there. You believed in me, you knew I could be better, that I could become a good person."

"And I don't want to ever lose you. I'm sorry I wasn't before, but I'm going to fight for you now. Whatever it takes." He promises.

"Oh yeah?" you lightly smirk at him.

"Yeah." He smiled at you. Though his expression turned serious again. "I mean it. I'm never going to give up on us. I choose you." He looked down before quietly adding, "Unless you don't want me to."

You gently grabbed his cheek, turning his fsce towards you, making him look at you again. "You know, you can be an idiot sometimes." A teasing smile on your face before you continued, "But you're my idiot, Steve Harrington."

Relief flooded his face, his eyebrows raised. "You have lots of making up to do." You say softly. "But I'm not going to give up on us either.

For a moment, you both just stared at each other. Then you smiled, big and warm.

"Good." Steve said after a while, pulling you into a long-awaited kiss.

And you didn't pull away.

You were the original babysitter.

You used to be the one always driving the kids around, the one the kids called for if they needed something, the one who sat through most of their D&D campaigns despite not knowing much about it.

Though, since D&D was something they cared about, you learned about it. For them. You learned about the rules, the characters, each of their strategies, tells, reactions.

You weren't just a babysitter to them. You were like their caring and protective 'older sister.' It had always been like that, just you and the kids.

But when WIll Byers disappeared, things changed. In a way, that little D&D game the kids always played was brought to life.

You were there for the kids though. You held them when they cried, you listened and protected them, and most importantly you believed in them.

That's why you were at the Byers house with Nancy and Jonathan when it was attacked that night by the demogorgon. You got to witness Steve and Nancy's relationship in all of its glory as well.

At that time, in high school, you weren't really involved with Steve and his friends. In fact you tried to avoid them. But you weren't clueless. You still knew Steve as the King of Hawkins High, Steve "the Hair" Harrington, Nancy's boyfriend.

But that night you also realized something else. You noticed the more matured version of Steve, even if it was just a little. After that night you could tell in small ways that he became less arrogant and selfish, but of course he was still a little cocky.

That night though, it still didn't change anything between you and Steve. The only thing that 'changed' was the small nod of acknowledgement and respect you two would exchange when seeing each other around.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

You weren't there but you had heard about the Halloween party. The big argument and the breakup that had followed between Nancy and Steve. You had felt bad for the both of them but, still, it didn't change anything nor did it concern you.

Well at least that's what you thought. Things did change, but it was more initiated by no other than Dustin Henderson.

Dustin had showed up at your house one night, slightly panicked. He was speaking so fast you barely understood. Though you were able to make out the things about Dart and everything else Dustin had recently found out about the Upside Down.

You were so focused on what he was saying, truly listening, that you didn't notice who was standing a few yards behind him. Not until you heard a loud sigh and a huff is when you looked up and saw Steve Harrington.

You gave what had seemed like a dirty look, but you were more just confused. "What is he doing here?"

"He's helping alright. And now so are you." Dustin responds before dragging you along.

From that you night on, you and Steve started to become acquainted with one another. You noticed things you hadn't seen or known about him before. You saw how Steve was trying, how he cared even if he didn't really wanna show it.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Even after the gate was closed, Steve didn't leave. If anything he became more involved. Like when he helped Dustin out when giving him advice and dropping him off at the Snow Ball.

The Snow Ball. That night was the night when Steve had decided his role as a protector and, though hating the title, a babysitter (or the 'mom') of the kids. He also finally accepted the breakup between him and Nancy.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Being more involved with the kids also meant being more involved with you. Something he didn't mind, he even started to grow fond over you.

You guys started to grow closer as friends. Hanging out even when the kids weren't there. You opened up to each other, told each other things that no one else knows.

You started crushing on Steve and vice versa. From then on it was just a race to see who would admit it first.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

It had happened unexpectedly one night. You and Steve had just finished dropping off the kids at their respective houses after a big group hangout.

You had been laughing while Steve just stared at you with awe and admiration in his eyes. You didn't notice at first but as soon as you did your laughter died down and you stared right back at him.

It was silent, the only thing heard was the engine running and probably your fastpaced heartbeat.

"Sorry." You say when he still hadn't said anything. "I didn't mean to be obnoxious."

He blinked. Confused or maybe just caught. "No don't apologize, I love your laugh."

Your eyebrows raise. "Really?"

"Yeah." He breathes out, suddenly nervous. He looks away before looking at you once again and saying, "I love everything about you. Whenever I'm with you, you just make me get this warm feeling and I feel like I'm enough and I don't have to pretend to be someone I'm not."

Your breath hitches slightly as he continues to confess. "I'm also scared, scared that I'll screw up what we have. But I can't hold back from telling you anymore. I like you. A lot. I have for a while."

He smiles softly at you, though you can tell he's anxious. Your eyes widen before they soften again, along with your voice as you admit, "I like you too, Steve."

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Months later, the two of you are together, very much in love. Both the kids and the teens are aware of your relationship, they have been for a long time.

However, that didn't stop the others from sparking thoughts, ideas, conversations about Steve still being hung up on Nancy. You tried to ignore it at first but then it seemed like too much was happening all at once, especially with Vecna and the Upside Down. Too much so that it was hard to not notice.

Like when you noticed how Nancy immediately dove in after Steve in Lover's Lake. How she wasn't even hesitant to provide him first aid after he got wounded.

Of course you were grateful that she helped out and saved your boyfriend. But that didn't stop the thoughts in your head or the lingering conversations about the pair.

You had heard the whispers and jokes about a possible second chance romance, a rekindling. The others always laughed it off. Steve did too but uncomfortably, shaking his head.

And the thing is, Steve really didn't do anything wrong. He wasn't flirting with her, touching her, encouraging the others when they spoke about it. But he also didn't shut it down. Making it seem like he didn't care when he should've.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

"Are you okay?" Steve asked. "You've seemed off all night and I can tell it's not just because of these monsters and all."

You just shrug. "I mean it seems like you're perfectly fine though."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Steve asks, confused but with a hint of fire in his tone.

You didn't want to start an argument with Steve, especially not while in the Upside Down and while he was wounded.

But you felt like you had to say something.

"Do you not love me anymore Steve?" Your throat tightens at soon as the words leave your mouth. "You can be honest, I'd rather that than you drag me along, pretending you still have feelings for me." You say quietly, feeling small and looking anywhere but at Steve.

"What?" His head immediately snaps up to you, a look of confusion and concern on his face. "Where the hell did you get that from?"

"I know it's stupid but you never correct them Steve. You just stand there laughing along with everyone else."

"What are you... Oh." He trails off as he finally realizes what you're talking about. You were talking about the others shipping him and Nancy, claiming that he's still in love with her.

Steve's a bit upset now, that you questioned him and his love for you. "You and I both know what they're saying isn't true, that I would never leave you." He's getting defensive now, his voice growing louder. "Plus why does it even matter. I'm with you. Nancy is with Jonathan. The others are just bored and trying to make fun of me, start meaningless drama. But do you seriously not trust me?"

Steve is angry, you can tell. But you're not really angry, just tired. Tired of hearing these 'Stancy' ships, tired of the second guessing, the disrespect people have to say stuff like that especially around you.

Though you can't help but match his tone. "If what they're saying isn't true then why don't you say that, defend us? And of course I trust you Steve and I love you so much. That's why this matters so much to me."

Steve sighs, hands rubbing down his face in frustration.

There's a silence before you very quietly say, "Why won't you fight for me, for us, Steve? Why can't you just say something, anything to shut it down?"

"Because I don't want to make things worse or even get involved, their words are just meaningless." He says, still upset.

"So you'd just rather make me feel worse instead then?" You say, your eyes starting to sting.

"I–" Steve starts but he gets interrupted by none other than Nancy herself.

"Guys come on. We need to get this plan straight right now. We don't have time for small talk."

You both turn, moving to walk up ahead to the rest of the group but Steve stops you for a second, grabbing your shoulder, "We're not done." You just nod in response.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Once you've caught up with the group, you all start to discuss. Trying to decide who's going with who and where.

"Okay well Steve is definitely with me." Nancy starts, her taking initiative as the leader of the group it seems. "We already know the layout."

Steve doesn't argue, but he tenses and avoids eye contact with you, especially considering the unfinished argument the two of you were just involved in.

Then Robin suggests going with them as well while Eddie says he'll distract the demobats.

Dustin instantly perks up at that, "I'll go with Eddie then."

"No you won't." You say firm. There's a small silence and everyone looks at you. Dustin is just a kid, though a smart and mature one. He means a lot to you and has a special place in your heart, you don't wanna risk losing him. "None of us should have to do this right now. No one should have to be bait. Obviously we have no other choices, but there's just absolutely no way I'm letting you go okay? I'll go with Eddie instead."

Steve looks at you, "No. No way, not happening."

You don't get a chance to respond because Nancy does instead. "Guys we don't have time for this, we need to get moving now." Nancy glances between the two of you.

You and Steve just stare at each other before Robin yells now too. "Come on guys, let's go!"

You all get up and start spreading into the established groups but before you split off Steve grabs your hand, "Just be careful. Please." He sounds desperate, almost apologetic, as if referencing to your earlier argument.

You soften slightly, "Fight for me."

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

The air is cold and quiet as you arrive. Being there is just wrong in so many ways and you hate the feeling it gives you.

You and Eddie are scared, but you of course won't admit it, instead choosing to act fearless and confident.

You both know the plan. Distract and fight off the demobats and then run.

The music works. The plan was going well. But then when it came time to finally run. Eddie didn't.

"Eddie no! What're you doing? Stop come on!" You yell and scream and beg. Anything. You wouldn't leave without Eddie.

You continue to yell, trying to get through the demobats that were swarming Eddie, not caring whether or not you got hurt. Your sole focus was that you just needed to get to him, to help him.

All you heard were his tortured screams of pain. "Run away. Don't be stupid. Forget me." You hear Eddie yell through the pain but you can't help but ignore his words, yelling back at him that you weren't giving up, that you weren't leaving him here.

By the time you get to him, the bats are on the ground, dead. You're injured pretty bad, but you didn't care about yourself right now. You fall down next to Eddie and hold him, placing his head in your lap.

"Hey" you say shakily. "Hey, they're gone. The plan worked. You did it, Eddie."

He speaks, weakly, his eyes glossy. "I didn't run away this time, right?"

"No honey, no, you didn't run away." You whisper to him as you caress his hair, trying to comfort him. "You were so brave. You did such a great job."

He swallows as he tries to breathe. Slowly whispering "I think it's finally my year."

There's a pause, a moment of silence, before he continues. "You and Henderson will have to look over those little sheep for me. Dont blame yourselves either. And tell Henderson that I love him okay?"

Your heart shatters. "Wait no, you'll get to tell him yourself alright? You just gotta hold on a little longer, please."

He doesn't answer, instead he softly says, "Tell Harrington good luck."

Your chest caves in and all you can say is, "I will." You grab his hand and squeeze, showing that you're there for him. He squeezes back but then his grip starts to loosen, his breathing slows heavily, and then he just goes still.

"Eddie no." You cry, tears soaking your cheeks as you look at him. "No, no, no Eddie please. Stay with me."

He was gone.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

A few miniutes later you heard yelling come from behind you. You gently turn, seeing Dustin. "Wait, Dustin stop. Don't come any closer please. You shouldn't see this." You beg.

He doesn't hear you or maybe he's just not listening because he keeps running, his voice cracking as he yells, "Eddie!"

And as if he hit a wall, he stops when he sees the scene. "No. No, no, not Eddie." His voice is barely there.

"I tried Dustin." You whisper, seeming ashamed of yourself, even though it wasn't your fault. "I tried to get him to run. He wouldn't listen."

Dustin is now on the other side of Eddie, sobbing. You attempt to stand up, wanting to comfort him but your legs buckle underneath you and you fall back down to the ground.

Dustin looks up immediately at the sound. That moment is when he realizes that you're hurt too. There's blood all over you, though some of it's from Eddie. Though it's clear you're wounded pretty bad. You can see it too, the blood. On your side, your shoulder, your leg.

"Fuck. I can't lose you too. We need to go. Right now." Dustin says and you were gonna refuse, you didn't want to leave Eddie, but you had no other choice. You promised yourself you would come back for him.

Dustin helps you up as you stumble. You both are crying as he drags you both to the gate, to get back to Hawkins.

You look back one last time. A small, "Thank you, Eddie." is all you manage to get out.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

You don't remember how or when you got through the gate.

You just remember the pushing and pulling of Dustin helping you.

Collapsing on the other side. You groaned slightly. It was really bright. Too bright. You squeeze your eyes shut, wanting it all to go away.

You heard shouting and then all of a sudden it was silent.

You open your eyes and you see Steve. He looks panicked. That's when you realize you're shaking. That you're covered in scratches and blood, not of all which is yours but still, you're hurt.

Steve doesn't hesitate, he moves. Quickly. "Hey it's okay. Hey look at me. It's okay I got you." The blood is soaking into his own clothes now.

"No, fuck you're bleeding. What happened?" He questions before turning around and yelling out desperately, "Nancy, Robin. Someone get help, get first aid now! Hurry!"

He turns back around looking into your eyes, scared. "How bad does it hurt? What happened? Where's Eddie?" He fires out questions at you.

You don't answer, you barely understood what he asked. But when he asked about Eddie, that's when you shook your head. You didn't even have to say anything. Steve saw the grief, the exhaustion. You looked done, wrecked.

"He sacrificed himself." Your voice cracks. "I.. I watched him die Steve. Right in my arms."

Steve's stomach drops hearing those words. The pain in your voice. "Oh baby, it's okay. You're okay. I know you did everything you could. I'm proud of you. You and Eddie. Just stay with me okay?"

You let out a whimper or maybe it's a sob. Steve's throat tighten, he hates seeing you hurt, seeing you cry, seeing you in so much pain.

Steve feels absolutely terrible. "Fuck this is all my fault. I shouldn't have let you go. I should've protected you both" He rambles on more to himself than anyone else.

Suddenly a hand grabs Steve's shoulder and he flinches. It's Nancy. "Steve." She looks at him sharply. "It's not your fault, you couldn't have prevented this."

"I could've helped. I could've tried. I could've done anything." Steve continues before getting cut off.

"Steve, I'm sorry, but we don't have time for this. We need to get her wounds tended to right now." Nancy says urgently.

Steve sighs, shakily. "Okay." He looks down at you and leans in caressing you softly, comforting. "Stay with me please. I choose you. Always. I should've said it sooner." He kisses your forehead before getting up.

"Thank you Steve." You whisper in return. "For being there for me, for fighting for me."

𝜗ৎ ps. i posted a steve harrington x reader earlier today and part 2 is coming out in about an hour

Anonymous asked:

can i request a steve x reader fic where the reader was the og babysitter and then starts dating steve in the early seasons but with the nancy and steve convos spurring around the party their relationship is getting tense and steve doesnt want to start drama so hasnt said anything but reader gets upset and starts an argument about why he doesn’t fight for her

but maybe argument gets short and maybe she split with eddie and trying to fight off the demobats and sees eddie die and gets hurt with the bats too and dustin finds her and steve is freaking out

i’m thinking this is during the season 4 with eddie and stuff

can see a part 2 with dustin acting out and reader calls him out when he’s picking fights with steve becaude she saw him die and she feels guilty asf still but holds it all together for everyone

sorry if this is too long…..

You avoided Steve at all costs for the next couple days.

You didn't go to work, didn't leave your house unless you absolutely had to, you even tried to avoid speaking to Robin because you knew she would probably force you and Steve to "talk it out."

Steve tried. He called everyday, numerous times, but you never answered. He even went to your house a couple times but he couldn't bring himself to actually knock on the door. Some days he didn't even make it out of the car. He just sat there and stared longingly at your house, as if waiting for you to just appear.

Steve felt terrible. Ashamed even. But he didn't want to give up.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

The night of the 'incident', he barely slept. He had spent all night tossing and turning in bed regretting how he let his jealousy get to him. He wished he could just be a man and confess the truth about how he felt. That he really really liked you.

So that's what he set out to do the next morning. He showed up early to Family Video. He prepared this whole speech that would explain everything to you. And then, hopefully, you would forgive him and you could live happily ever after.

But you never showed up. Steve kept glancing at the door, waiting. Every time he heard the door open he lit up just a little hoping it was you, but it never was.

An hour goes by and there's still no sign of you. Then the phone rings and Robin answers.

"Are you sure you're okay? Do you need anything?" Robin pauses, a small look of concern on her face. "Okay, well I hope you feel better soon."

She hangs up and turns to look at Steve, "She's sick." Steve just nods and then sighs turning back around to continue what he was doing.

He knew you weren't sick but he wouldn't tell Robin that. He couldn't. He felt too guilty.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

You called in sick again the next day and the next. By then, Robin knew something was up.

Family Video was empty and Steve had reorganized the same display of VHS tapes three times in the last half hour.

Robin noticed.

"Steve." He freezes. "What did you say to her?"

Steve doesn't face her. Instead, he tries to play dumb. "To who? I don't know what you're talking about."

"Steve, come on. I know something is up." Robin says gently. "The last couple days you've been looking like a lost puppy. And you and I both know she's not sick." She pauses. "She always shows up or at least talks. She's clearly avoiding someone, and I know that someone isn't me. So spill Harrington."

Robins words hit Steve like bullets. He stays silent for a few moments before letting out a shaky sigh and turning towards Robin, though looking down at the ground.

"I messed up Robin. I messed up really bad," He barely whispers out, his vision blurred but no tears coming out.

"Oh Steve." Robin rushes over to comfort him.

"I didn't mean it," his voice cracks. "I told her that guys like him, like Eddie, wouldn't get with girls like her. She believed me. She believed that I didn't want her."

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

Steve had calmed down, as he now stared at nothing as he leaned against the counter.

"Do you?" Robin asks suddenly.

"Do I what?" Steve responded but didn't look up.

"I mean do you actually want her Harrington?"

Steve's jaw tightens and his eyes start to gloss over again but he quickly blinks it away. "Yeah." He admits. "I really do Robin, so much."

There's a small pause before he continues, finally looking up at her. "You were right that day. About me being jealous. I just didn't realize until it was too late."

Robin softens at his words, stepping closer to him. "Hey." She bumps his shoulder against hers. "You acted like an absolute idiot." She pauses. "But that doesn't mean you can't fix it." She says squeezing his arm gently as if providing encouragement.

𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ𝜗ৎ

That night, Steve shows up at your house. Unannounced of course.

He walks up to your front door but he doesn't knock, not yet. He paces nervously, silently muttering to himself.

He almost turns around to leave but doesn't as he replays his and Robin's conversation from hours earlier. Finally, he knocks, though hesitantly.

It's silent as he waits. Steve's holding his breath, clearly anxious. He almost thinks you aren't home as it feels like years have gone by until you finally open the door.

Your eyes widen in surprise when you see Steve in front of you but you quickly try to put on a neutral expression, as if wanting to guard your heart from whatever Steve is going to say this time.

"Hi." Steve says quietly, so quietly that you almost didn't hear him. You notice that he looked tired, that he's not wearing his usual confident and cocky smirk.

You frown slightly and then sigh, "Steve. What're you doing here?" You cross your arms awaiting his response, as if protecting yourself. Steve notices.

You don't invite him inside. You just stand there, staring at the ground as you wait for him to speak.

Steve runs a hand through his hair, taking a moment before saying, "I didn't mean it. Any of it."

You sigh in response, still not really believing him or his sincerity. Though he keeps going. "I fucked up. I wasn't mad at you or even Eddie. I was just jealous and scared. God, I was so scared."

You still don't say anything and Steve swallows, his voice wavering as he continues. "I was scared because I've never had anyone make me feel this way before. I was scared that I wasn't enough and that you wouldn't want me. That's why those godawful words left my mouth. They didn't even come out right."

'Guys like him don't really get with girls like you.'

Steve is more passionate now in his words, word vomiting in an attempt to fix everything, to explain. "I didn't mean it in a 'no one would ever want you' type of way. I meant it in a you're such a beautiful, sweet, kind, smart girl, and so much more, that no guy would treat you the right way, that you would always deserve so much more than some random guy could ever give you, including me."

He's out of breath now and his eyes are glossy and raw as he looks at you. But he's determined to continue. "I care about you so fucking much. More than I thought. I didn't know what to do with those feelings, so I said something stupid. I wanted you so much and now I'm scared that I messed everything up before I even had a chance to tell you."

You finally look up at Steve, tears bearing your eyes. He pauses one last time, looking into your eyes, wanting you to not just hear what he's saying but to feel his words too. "I'm so sorry for what I said and how I made you feel. I promise I'll never do it again but I understand if you don't forgive me."

He waits now. Standing there, vulnerable, while his words settle in the air.

"Steve.." you whisper, your voice cracking slightly. You don't give him a chance to respond before jumping into his arms, your arms around his neck and your face against his chest. He's quick to wrap his hands around your waist pulling you closer.

"I'm so fucking sorry, sweetheart." He says softly, a tear or two falling down his cheek. You guys stand there wrapped in each others arms for what feels like ages.

Slowly, you pull away but just a little, wanting to stay wrapped in his arms forever, feeling his warmth. You look up at him and gently say, "I forgive you, Steve."

He exhales and smiles softly, wiping the tears off of your cheeks. "I love you." He whispers.

You smile, small but warm. "I love you too, Steve."

Steve was staring at you. Hard.

Family Video was completely deserted of customers, almost. Besides Eddie Munson who was leaning against some VHS tapes in the horror section as he talked to you and made you smile a little too hard. As he so clearly flirted with you when you were supposed to be working and stocking the shelves back up.

And Steve didn't like it, not one bit.

"Just go confess your love for her already, Harrington." Robin mutters under her breath for only Steve to hear, causing him to break out of his stare and flinch away from the front counter, turning around to face Robin who was holding a stack of old VHS tapes.

Steve grimaces. "What the hell are you talking about?" His eyes not so secretly drifting back to you and Eddie as he awaits her response.

Robin scoffs. "Dude you've been giving Eddie the death stare for the last 20 minutes, you looked like you were about to explode. And I swear I didn't see you blink once." Robin pauses as her gaze softens, only a little, before saying, "You're clearly jealous and you just don't have the guts to admit it."

Steve groaned, frustrated almost. "Robin you can't just make stuff up like that, what if she heard you." He quickly glances at you before facing Robin again. "Okay look, she is my friend. That's it."

Robin just rolls her eyes. "Whatever, keep telling yourself that Steve." She sighs at him as she walks away with her VHS tapes.

By closing time, Eddie and Robin have left, leaving you and Steve alone to lock up.

Normally, you and Steve would have some kind of banter or small talk going on but tonight it's oddly quiet.

You're unsure why, but then as you and Steve walk towards the exit together, you notice how his shoulders were tense, his jaw tight, and he looked like he was ready to punch something.

Right before reaching the doors, you stop. "Hey Steve..." you say softly. "Are you okay? You seem a bit off tonight."

"I'm fine" Steve snaps, not even glancing at you, but he must've seen the small look of surprise you gave him out of the corner of his eye because he sighed before saying, with less attitude, "I'm fine, just tired."

You know Steve well enough to tell that he's lying, that's why you pushed, just a little. "Are you sure? I feel like you've been acting a bit weird all shift. Was it something I did?" You didn't think you had done anything but your own overthinking and insecurities were getting to your head.

Steve finally turns toward you and snaps again. "I just don't get it. What's the deal with you and Eddie? And why the hell do you have to flirt with him throughout our entire shift, it's annoying."

Your stomach starts to twist but you ignore it. "Me and Eddie Munson? Flirt?" You laugh right in his face. "Me and Eddie are just friends, you know this Steve. Him and I have been friends since we were kids. Always will be."

Steve runs his hands through his hair. "Yeah... I should've known, well I do know. Guys like him don't really get with girls like you."

"What?" Your entire body froze. "What the hell is that supposed to mean Steve?"

His eyes widen and puts his hands out, almost reaching for you, as he realizes what he said didn't sound right, "Wait no that's not–"

"No you can just fuck off Steve" You say as your throat tightens a little and your eyes start to sting but you won't let him see you cry, especially over something so stupid. "I know I've never dated anyone and that I'm not your type, or probably anyone's type for that matter, but you don't get to act or say things like that."

He tries to speak, to explain that's not what he meant but you just ignore him. You look at him one last time before quickly walking out the doors and letting them slam shut behind you.

Steve doesn't move. He just stands there, thinking back on what he just did. "Fuck me," he groans, rubbing his hands over his face and then through his hair in frustration or maybe it's regret.

He hadn't meant to hurt you. He hadn't even meant to say those words, they just came out wrong. He just didn't want to admit that a girl as perfect as you deserves so much more, much more than himself or Eddie could ever give you.

Eddie. He thinks. It wasn't even really about him.

He realizes that Robin was right. He was jealous. Jealous that someone else had your attention, that someone else got to make you smile so hard that your face hurt.

Now it was Steve's turn for his throat to tighten. "What have I done?" He asks himself.
