Ask not for whom the gurdy hurds. It hurds for thee.
númenórean pottery fragments dated between s.a. 3253-3319. discovered on the southwestern shores of gondor
I’m starting to think some of y’all haven’t actually felt the rain on your skin… which is crazy because no one else can feel it for you
ooh such interesting stuff going on with gender and death in Sophocles fragment 523 (from Polyxena):
ἀκτὰς ἀπαίωνάς τε καὶ μελαμβαθεῖς λιποῦσα λίμνης ἦλθον, ἄρσενας χοὰς Ἀχέροντος ὀξυπλῆγας ἠχούσας γόους.
"I came, leaving behind the songless shores and black depths of the lake, the strong streams of the Acheron echoing with sharp-struck screams."
1) Achilles is referring to himself in the feminine, using the feminine participle λιποῦσα, because he's a ghost, a ψυχή, and therefore a grammatically feminine entity even when the word ψυχή isn't actually in the sentence for the participle to have to agree with
and 2) he calls the streams of the Acheron ἄρσενας, which does indeed mean "strong" or "mighty" but which also just means "male" or "masculine"
so the underworld itself is a masculine place, but a place that renders men grammatically feminine upon their deaths...
for the WIP guessing game: silver?
You stumped me! Here are three recent sentences from "Screwtape on Maedhros":
Three of his brothers dead in Doriath. His own hand stained, once again, with elven blood. Shall it all have been for nothing? If he turns aside now, it will all have been a waste. You must simply keep his mind from the knowledge - obvious as it may be to you - that it is a waste already.
WIP Word Guessing Game
Rules: Send me an ask with a word and I'll post a sentence or paragraph from one of my WIPs that contains that word!
If you manage to stump me, I'll write three sentences and share these.
If you want to play please feel free to reblog/repost this so people can send you words.
Persuasion is a particularly comforting read, because it's a book where good things happen, not in spite of the bad things or as consolation for the bad things, but often because of the bad things.
Anne loses her family home, and her family moves to a city she hates instead of staying in the familiar countryside like she wanted, but being forced outside her comfort zone is good for her. She's useful to her nephews, she strengthens her friendship with the Musgroves, she makes new friends with the Harvilles and Captain Benwick. It allows Captain Wentworth to come back into her life, and that seems like a bad thing at first, but it allows her to move past the regret of the past and into a new relationship.
Louisa's injury is a terrible turn of events, but it brings Louisa and Benwick together, and allows Anne to show her true worth in a way that makes Wentworth admit his love for her.
Even Anne's great regret, her refusal of Wentworth that led to eight years of misery, turns out to be a good thing. Wentworth's disappointment made him throw himself into his career, and his lack of a wife gave him freedom to go on voyages and into battles without worrying about how it would affect a family that relied on him. Anne's rejection--his first taste of failure--gave him enough maturity to keep the money that he made, and he came home a rich man who could well support a wife. Instead of starting out married life with stress and worry over uncertain funds, they are able to wed as people who are financially stable and secure in their love for each other.
It's a deeper, richer message than just saying that good things come to those who wait, or that someday you might get enough good things in life to make up for the bad stuff. It's saying that your suffering might be the necessary step to bringing about a life that's better than you could have hoped for. And that's very comforting.

It's been a few years since I drew these but I wanted to get them out there. Here you have my vision of, in order, Cair Paravel, Anvard, and Tashbaan.
For Cair Paravel I referenced a picture of Mont Saint Michel, for Anvard a drawing in an Austrian castle I once spent the night at, and Tashbaan was drawn without a reference.
All of the pictures are pencil and soft pastel on paper, then edited a bit to bring out the colors.
The full saga of Margie and the Nuns (so far). Realised I never compiled these in one place.! Also, bonus Margies!
I've been looking for a fun/quick little animation sideproject to flex my frame-by-frame muscles, so introducing Margie! A cat-goose dragon based on this little fella from this medieval manuscript
