sharpening

i’ve actually been using the exact same sharpening settings for about a year now, and i really love how they make my gifs look. one thing that makes a huge difference to the final quality, though, is the definition/quality of the source material. for all of my hr gifs, i use 2160p videos, which is a big reason why they usually come out so sharp

these are my sharpening settings:

sometimes, if the source is particularly noisy or grainy and i don’t like how it looks, i also use a camera raw filter.

i go to filter > camera raw filter > details and use these settings:

after that, i usually lower the opacity of the filter to around 30–40%. it really depends on the gif and how much noise there is in the source. sometimes i don’t use it at all, because i feel like the gif looks better without it

coloring

this is probably the most chaotic part of my entire process, i honestly color my gifs based mostly on vibes. i don’t use a psd because i have an older laptop and very limited storage, so i can’t really keep lots of psds saved. because of that, i basically color every single gif from scratch every time i make a set

and honestly, coloring is what takes me the longest

after that, i start adding a lot of selective color layers. basically, every color that i want to change gets its own layer, so i can end up with a ridiculous number of layers. i just keep adjusting things based on how the scene looks until i’m happy with it

that’s basically everything! i’m honestly really sorry if this explanation is a little confusing. my gif making process is extremely chaotic, and it’s genuinely so hard to explain because i don’t really follow a set formula. i’ll add a layer, delete it, add another one, change the coloring, undo it, change the saturation, add contrast, remove it again… and i just keep messing around with everything until i finally like how it looks
