on one hand if i was in the quarry i’d be like okay well we can drink inside the lodge. we can light a fire in the fireplace inside the lodge. no reason we can’t have our little party inside the lodge. let’s stay inside the lodge! on the other hand i’m a total pushover and i love a bonfire and if everyone else wanted to have a bonfire outside, i’d probably go along with it. so i’d definitely die too huh
i do think emma and abby had crushes on each other at some point over the summer but they never aligned. like i think abby liked emma at the beginning of the summer, but then emma started hooking up with jacob and abby figured she blew her chance and now they were friends anyway so it would be weird. then emma liked abby at the end of the summer after losing interest in jacob but by then abby and nick were into each other and emma figured she blew her chance and became abby x nick supporter #1 because if your friend likes a guy you should always back them up and do what you can to help them. and obviously kissing nick was just a way to get things moving between him and abby, and a way to make jacob jealous, no weird triangulation of feelings by low key sabotaging her crush’s friend’s possible new relationship. right? obviously. anyway yuri is everywhere for those with eyes to see

your laura palmer comparison was trite and unfounded

like i’m sorry but in what world is just quoting the first line of this stanza as effective in any way as the whole stanza (if not the whole poem, it’s not a particularly long poem) unless you are engagement farming and know people won’t read a whole stanza but will reblog something with mary oliver’s name on it. because also “sometimes in late summer i won’t touch anything” could be made to mean a lot of different things….. and people will just reblog stuff that says “summer” in the summer…… lots of examples of this again very bizarre approach to me but again not a real problem, it’s just like a weird online pet peeve lol
wrt posting one or two lines of poetry out of context, i think beyond doing a disservice to the poet by chopping up their work to make it more palatable/generally relatable/quickly digestible for fast paced, short attention online engagement, it also often makes the actual line of text indecipherable like without context i just don’t know what it means without projecting so much extra meaning into it that it doesn’t matter who or what you’re quoting other than to give more literary credence to whatever words you’re throwing around. assuming the author isn’t misattributed anyway which happens all the time, and people either don’t know or don’t care because certain misattributions serve their message somehow if only to boost their self importance, because being the kind of person to read a certain kind of author has clout or something. not that this is like a deep real world problem but it speaks to an attitude towards literature that is antithetical to engaging with literature imo. sorry to be a killjoy and like i have definitely posted like this as well, my bio rn is an out of context line of poetry lol so maybe this is hypocritical of me to say a little bit, and also there’s good that comes out of it too like i think it’s actually very well intentioned when i take off my cynic’s glasses for a second because “fragments” are such a popular style of posting about literature and sharing particular lines that stand out or resonate. but i think we could all be a little more aware of what we’re reading online, where it comes from, what purpose someone has to post it, and what their stake is in quoting something without context, or so parsed down that it either means nothing or inverts the original meaning of the text, or something just completely misattributed. anyway post inspired by someone quoting half of a line (not even a full sentence) of a mary oliver poem that you could then project your own meaning onto without thinking about anything potentially unrelatable like what she was actually writing about
