dreams don't mean anything

summary: theo has a dream about you and hates it

warnings: none :) words: 1.07k

The beach Theo was on looked like the one he loved as a child. Fine sand, warm water, and an even warmer hand slotted in his.

His dark gaze dipped, finding a daintier hand settled in his with an air of normalcy, like it was baffling that it could ever be laced between another's fingers. Those same brown eyes met another pair, a familiar set that usually forced a wave of annoyance up his throat, but the only feeling that caught him off guard was… affection. A deep and all-encompassing passion that pulled his heartstrings so tight he was nervous they might snap.

You grinned, your pearly whites so blinding he could have sworn he saw all of the reasons why you had smile lines so deep reflecting back at him.

The 'fake' version of him lost the heat of your hand as he snuck both of his palms onto either side of your face and bent forward to brush his lips against yours.

────୨ৎ────

Theo gasped, heaving out startled breaths as he stared at the ceiling of his room. He watched as the fan spun in endless circles, and, immediately regretted it as the repeat motion hypnotized him into remembering that blasted dream.

You were annoying and far too loud to be of interest to Theodore Nott. Surely that was the case. Though, that truth came with another one. He wasn't stupid; of course you were beautiful, with brilliant skin that shone like silk in the direct sunlight, and eyes that looked like kaleidoscopes when you sat reading by the firelight.

But that could be chalked up to a very severe case of perfect proportions. Right? Right.

He curled upwards, wracking his fists against his temples to try and knock the desire to settle back into that dream just to feel your touch against his bicep and neck as you wrapped your arms around him into an intimate embrace as the two of you kissed like you were commemorating a moment that must be celebrated.

The alarm clock on his bedside table began to ring. Mattheo groaned from across the room. Both noises were a cruel reminder that this was real life now.

He dragged himself out of bed, attempting to get Mattheo to do the same as he got ready. The boy in question merely made another noise of contempt as he pushed his friends hand away.

Theo brushed his teeth all while blinking away dangerous thoughts of you. When he ran cream through his damp curls, he fought to push away the idea of your touch replacing his. Nothing worked. It's like he walked through a cobweb and never could never really get the last few strings off his face.

Bereft of any motivation to do anything more than think about what a dream like that could possibly mean, he stalked out of his room, making sure to not make eye contact with the chair you usually sat in at night (which he swore had just grown your big, blinking eyes and smile).

Theo, usually a man who prided himself on his courage and overflowing amount of steely resolve couldn't bring himself to even look at you during breakfast; or lunch; or dinner.

His actions were undeniably odd, and the fact that Theo was usually a by the book individual made it hard to not notice his off script behavior, especially when Mattheo's scrutinizing stare was in play.

On the fourth day of the Italian doing anything but meeting your eyes (even choosing studying in the dark corners of the library on a Saturday night) Mattheo knew a conversation was to be had.

See, he was many things, but blind was certainly not in his short list of weaknesses.

"You must be exhausted," Mattheo quipped, nudging Theo's shoulder.

Theo's blank stare flickered and broke away from the intense burning look he was giving the back of your head.

"From what?" He sighed.

"I mean, avoiding her and staring at her really must be taking it out of you."

"Merlin," he picked up his quill and began to write furiously. "I am not staring. I was thinking about what I should write."

"Mate, if you look any harder you're going to make her head explode," He drawled, leaning back in his chair. "It's worse than Potter staring at that Weasley girl and pretending like no one notices."

"Could you be anymore aggravating?" Theo hissed.

"Just go talk to her."

"I have zero obligations to talk to any person. Unlike you, I don't get validation from others. It's all," he tapped his temple, "in here."

Mattheo sneered. "Who pissed in your pumpkin juice?"

"No one. I'm just… not sleeping well."

"Aww," Mattheo reached over to pinch his friends cheek. "Do you need me to tuck you in?"

Theo swatted his invasive hand away. "Murder is easy to get away with when you're rich. Remember that."

"Pfft, I'm not scared of you." He rolled his eyes and then paused. "Oi, are you not sleeping cause of her? An itsy bitsy dream, maybe?"

Suddenly, Theo's quill scratched a long black line across his parchment.

"Merlin's pants, Theodore. You are! That's atrocious! A fucking dream, really? Are you in a romance novel, now?"

"Could you keep your voice down?" Theo hissed, dropping his quill altogether.

"Did you two kiss? Hold hands and have a picnic on the Black Lake? Oh! Totally fucked on a cloud—"

"Shut up!"

Snape glared from across the lip of his bubbling cauldron.

"You know," Mattheo began, glancing your way.

"Don't. Even."

"You know, I'm actually very good at getting the girl. Send her some puppy dog eyes and run your fingers through that mop on your head and she'll be a puddle at your feet."

"Uhm, she's a person, not a chocolate bar in the sun. Also, didn't have a dream and don't want her. Too fucking loud, that one."

Mattheo's eyes tightened into slits. "Fine. She's fit. I'll ask her out."

"Sure you will." Theo scoffed. Mattheo didn't miss the pinkening of his cheeks.

He laughed tauntingly, and slowly stood from his chair. Almost immediately, Theo grabbed his wrist and pulled him back down.

"And you don't like her right, Theo?"

"Right."

Thinking about in love! Theo who...

✦ Who would endlessly stare at you in class, his hand rubbing your lower thigh. He would multitask, of course, writing neat notes about the class's contents, just in case you got too distracted. And, if he couldn't sit next to you, he'd pass you little notes that never failed to make you smile.

✦ Who would talk about you to his friends almost to the point of exhaustion. He was obsessed, truly. He couldn't shut up about you, and Mattheo had never heard Theo open his mouth so much.

✦ Who would always save a seat for you right next to him in the Great Hall, and, if you were going to be late, he would grab extras of your favorite foods so you wouldn't go without.

✦ Who was quiet in spoken word, but loud with his actions. He was always bringing you gifts, sometimes they were big and ostentatious, other times they were small things he saw in passing in Hogsmeade—no matter what, each one was meaningful.

✦ Who would take you on weekly dates, always making sure he was your outlet for your stress and worries. He left nothing unsaid, making sure you knew he was going to be there and that he loved you more than words could say.

✦ Who would watch you get ready for class, for parties, for date nights with rapt fascination, not just to admire your beauty but to make sure he knew what products you were running low on so he could replace them before they ran out.

✦ Who never really knew how to handle all of the public words of affection you would give him, so he would take them with shy smiles and pink cheeks he would try to hide.

✦ Who would surprise you at your house over the summer after realizing letters wouldn't suffice for two long months. He would show up at your door, a rare, wide smile on his face as he took in your shocked expression. He'd pull you into a tight hug, kissing you silly.

✦ Who would take you back to his villa in Italy, showing you off to his neighbors, who always asked about the girl he talked about so frequently.

just something to feed y'all

theo x gf! reader

It was late when Theo knocked on your dorm door, so deep into the evening that you were already pajama-clad with a toothbrush hanging between your lips.

You opened the door, mouth full of toothpaste and all. Your boyfriend grinned lazily, the fatigue in his eyes slowly slipping away.

"Cara mia," toned arms wrapped around your midsection before Theo kissed your cheek, narrowly escaping the frothy white gel leaking onto your chin.

"How washh stdyin?" Your voice was muffled, almost incomprehensible. A dark brow quirked up at you. "Shorry, I'll brush my teef nw."

He gave you the okay, head immediately finding your pillows. Returning to the bathroom with a smile on your face, you giggled into the brush bristles when you heard Theo snore from your bed.

Even star-fished across your bed, expression screwed up in sleep, he was devilishly handsome. Almost out of your league. His body, corded with lean muscle, was made for the Mediterranean coast, his skin meant to be blanketed in golden sun—not the dreary gray skies of Scotland. Infuriatingly, he was also always rosy-cheeked and oh so perfect.

"Theo," you murmured. Blue eyes still shielded from the lamp light in your room, he opened his arm, beckoning you to crawl in. Of course, you obliged, grabbing your Xylomancy essay off the foot of your bed.

He nuzzled his dirty blonde locks into your stomach, bicep curling around your waist like a heavy chain. You raked nails up and down his forearm, focusing on reading and then rereading your essay for the umpteenth time, an attempt at preventing yourself from falling into disastrous boredom.

It didn't work.

Groaning, you dropped the countless papers onto the floor, opting to fiddle with your red glitter pen, something you only wrote with to piss Trelawney off. She said your pen had bad juju during a fit of 'looking beyond the veil'—whatever that meant.

You gaze slowly dropped to your fingers still trailing across olive skin and then back to the pen grasped tightly in your other hand. You probably had that look on your face—the one that Theo said only promised something he wouldn't be happy with.

Smiling coyly even thought no one could see you, you gave into the thought moving slowly through your head anyway.

At first, it was just one little peace sign placed just below the rolled cuff of his fitted black button-up. Then a few bows scattered around, hearts here and there, and a few flowers sprouting from the thin silver bracelet banded around his wrist with your initial dangling from it.

Post drawing-frenzy, half of his right arm was more red sparkle than skin. As you glanced at your artistry, a giggle bubbled in your throat. Of course, that, not the drawing, woke him up. Your laugh.

"Something's amusing?" His voice was drugged with sleep, deep and smooth.

"No." You bit your lip. Theo squinted like he had awoke looking directly into the light. His scrutinizing stare traveled downwards until it caught the sparkle.

"You decorated me." His tone was plain.

"I Picasso'd you."

"Bows and hearts are Picasso?"

"…and peace signs and flowers."

He held up his wrist, looking closer at the little pictures crawling all over him. "I'm red. Glittery, too."

"You're even cuter now."

An unsuppressed grin was what you got in return.

You knew Theo, and it was no shock to you that the next day, he strolled into the Great Hall, sleeves rolled up, his semi-permanent tattoos on full display.

hear me out

summary: mattheo and alcohol don't mix, add in a heartbreaking quidditch loss, and everything goes to shit

warnings: angst, yelling, anger, cursing words: 2.5k

300:80. That's how bad Slytherin lost—220 points. Slytherin hadn't had a loss that bad since they lost to Gryffindor their second year, when Harry "Golden Boy" Potter caught the bloody snitch in his mouth.

Everyone's game had been off since Tracey Wolfs became captain, only coming out on top of the short list because his cousin was one of the star female players on the Holyhead Harpies. He got none of the so-called "family talent" he bragged so much about. Mattheo knew making Wolfs captain was a no-go, which made the devastating loss burn a little bit brighter.

Watching a sea of red and gold erupt in a cacophony of cheers ticked him off even more, driving him to slink off the field, broom limply dragging behind him as he bypassed you and the locker rooms to shower and sulk in his dorm.

It was childish, really, leaving you, bathed in green and his name, on the stands and with a smile, expecting the usual from him. Mattheo usually flew up to your spot in the Slytherin section, a sly grin on his face, and would leave you with a kiss just as fast as he came. That, obviously, did not happen.

But if Mattheo was being honest, he was dejected and embarrassed and felt like he had disappointed his father, of all people. He could claim nothing bothered him, that Voldemort had no control over him, but it'd be a lie. A bold-faced one at that.

That cool, calm, and collected facade he wore as a second skin cracked, and no one, especially you, was going to see it.

────୨ৎ────

The party in the Slytherin common room was in full swing, everyone deciding a good party shouldn't go to waste, opting to drink away their sorrows. It was only missing one person, their star player—Mattheo.

He was sitting on his bed, staring at the wall, possibly plotting the death of the entire Gryffindor team and Tracey Wolfs. An almost empty bottle of firewhiskey sat capped on his bed, right next to his crossed legs.

Alcohol and Mattheo didn't mix, the whole school knew that, you knew that. It was a dangerous combination, one that turned his blood sour, personality vitriolic.

So, when you knocked on the door, a small smile on your face, a drink in your hand, his foggy brain turned off all sense of logic.

"Hey," he gruffed.

You knew he'd be upset, but something looked different. Felt different. The whole thing was unfortunate, really.

"Hi, love," you murmured. "Can I come in?"

A thick pause of silence passed as he stared at you. "Sure… You went to the party?"

"Yes, I was just waiting to give you some time." You moved to his bed, staring at the bottle of alcohol sitting on his comforter. "…Looks like you had your own party."

He didn't laugh, he just stared holes into your forehead. "Mhm. Did."

"Are you okay? After what happened?"

A sigh slipped past as he plopped himself unceremoniously next to you. "Fine. Truly. That git Wolfs won't be, though."

"Mattheo," you chastised, a hand going to your forehead. "You can't hex your own captain because he made a few bad calls."

"Can't I?"

"No."

"Pity."

Your hand dropped from your forehead, which was most likely wrinkling by the second, and slowly reached for his hand. He pulled away before you could even brush the pad of your finger across his skin.

The rejection stung more than you cared to admit.

"You've hardly looked at me since you… since the match." Your voice was light and quiet. "I'm worried about you, is all."

"I said I'm fine." He spat the words out like the sheer idea of them turned his mouth bitter.

"Yes, you've said that."

"I've said it because it's true."

"No, it's not."

His jaw flexed, his eyes closed.

"You left the pitch solemnly. Disappeared for hours without even a word to me. And now, you've almost drank yourself to alcohol poisoning." You glanced at the bottle. "You hate all kinds of whiskey, even the expensive kind."

"I like it now."

The silence was heavy and it carried a certain sense of dread that settled low in your stomach.

"Losing hurts. I know that. But you have got to see that this is only one match."

His gaze traveled upwards. It was the first time he'd truly looked at you all day. "One match?"

"Now, you know that's not what I meant-"

"Then what did you mean?"

"I mean it shouldn't define who you are."

He stood, hands balled into fists at his side. "It's so easy for you to say that."

You laughed, hollow and thin. "Bloody hell does that mean?"

"It's easy for you because you don't know what it means to feel like this," his voice was lower, rougher. "Everyone watching as I get tossed around like an idiot."

"Mattheo-"

"Shut up!" He groaned, running a hand down the side of his face. "You don't know anything."

"I was out there cheering for you, you did not look like an idiot!"

"I know you were cheering, I saw my name on your bloody jumper. Wish it could have helped."

"What?"

He shifted, bending down over you until his arms bracketed your frame. He was so close to you now that you could smell the alcohol on his breath. "I wish it could have helped."

It felt like you were swallowing needles. "I came here so you wouldn't be alone."

His head dropped so you could just see his hair. "Great. Well, you've seen me now so you can get back to your own party."

"I'm not leaving you like this."

He looked up again, eyes glassy. A flicker of softness passed over him but it hardened just as quickly as it left. "Wonderful."

"Why are you so angry with me?"

"I'm not angry with you! Fuck. How are you so blind?"

"Blind?" You spluttered, pushing at his broad shoulders. "I can assure you I'm not blind. If anyone is blind, it's you. This game, this loss, just made you feel something that you think you shouldn't have! Something that you don't want to admit!"

"Felt what? Tell me. Oh, Merlin, please tell me."

"…you felt humiliated."

Mattheo blinked slowly. He was incensed; angry; irate. It all was too much, and not what he wanted to hear from you. Something, the only thread he had left, must have frayed too thin. "Merlin, when are you going to stop acting like my fucking therapist? All you do is whine and tell me how I screw everything up! I'm obviously… humiliated, according to you, and you're trying to turn this into a lesson like you're my bloody shrink! Get it through your thick fucking skull that I don't need your help. Fuck."

"Mattheo! You-"

"Oh, I what?" He reached out a callused hand, grasping onto your wrist, tugging at the hand pressed against his frame. "What? What? Just fucking say it!"

You flinched, pushing at him harder.

Mattheo loosened, letting his hand drop to his side. Brown eyes met yours, the face he saw reflecting in your iris' didn't look like him—he looked like his father; the same sharp nose, the same curls, and the same tongue that lashed out harsh words to anyone who got too close.

His spine unfurled as he stumbled away from you.

Your name came out like a whisper. Reverent; sad; almost silent. "I- I'm so sorry."

"You almost hurt me."

Mattheo opened his mouth again. Your lips quivered. He stopped.

"Don't… you dare do that to me again, Mattheo Riddle."

He was talking to you now—you knew it. Most likely apologizing again. But the ringing in your ears overpowered any semblance of hearing you might have had left. It was confusing and overwhelming, and none of it was as simple as it should have been.

Tears pooled at your waterline, tearing lines of salt down your cheeks, that, you thought, may scar from how much they burned.

Your boyfriend had never been angry with you like that, never that close to feeling like he would lay a hand on you. His touch had never felt so severe.

Lines blurred at the edges as you stood, shaky hands fumbling for the doorknob that seemed to get further and further away from your clutches.

Something within you paused when Mattheo spoke your name again—bone-dry, broken, and utterly depressing. White noise rushed in your ears.

"Please, I- I can't explain what came over me; I don't know what came over me," he began. "I'd never, never, lay a hand on you. Know that. Please. I'm so sorry for yelling. Please don't leave."

He was begging now, begging for that piece of your heart he had so selfishly stolen from you like a thief in the night.

"Matty, I can't."

"Just hear me out."

With your chest heaving, you turned your head to the side, just catching a glimpse of that face that never left your mind, even when you slept. You wished you hadn't. The regret you felt was immediate. The boy you had known to always be stuck on his high horse, always hidden behind concrete walls made of unachievable expectations and words that cut deeper than knives looked like his wings had been clipped.

He stood before you, his shell cast to his feet.

"You don't understand. I cannot… cannot breathe without you near me. I don't deserve you, and my actions tonight have not reflected that. You have to believe me. I—fuck—drank too much and I knew it wouldn't work out well for me, but I was just so disappointed that it happened. What I did just now was cruel and unforgiving and it wasn't me. Well, it was me, but not how I should have acted. I kept thinking about my father, and you know what happens when I do, and—"

"Mattheo." Your tone tip toed the line between anger and empathy. You turned to face him fully now. "I do understand because I love you. I need time."

────୨ৎ────

Four days passed.

Four agonizing days.

Usually Hogwarts felt massive with its ever changing hallways and moving staircases, but it felt far too small when the only person Mattheo wanted to see wouldn't dare to even glance his way.

You were everywhere and nowhere all at once.

At the far end of the table, smiling softly at something Pansy said.

In your favorite chair in the common room, your nose in a book.

On your knees in front of the greenhouse, clipping away at flowers, your hair shoved beneath your favorite woolly scarf to prevent the snow from dampening the strands.

Every time, he'd hesitate before letting his feet carry himself to you. Though, you were always quicker, traipsing away to do something that didn't involve him.

It wasn't cruel or maddening, just mind numbing… just far away. From him.

He didn't blame you. How could he?

That blasted night played over and over in his head like a broken record. Your pretty face flinching, the warmth of your wrist in his hand, and that look in your eyes which haunted him the most. You looked at him like you were afraid.

That realization settled in his chest like lead.

Sleep didn't come as naturally anymore, dinners were skipped, and trudging to class seemed as strenuous as swimming the length of the Black Lake. So, he spent most of his time in the astronomy tower, smoking the occasional cigarette, but never picking up a bottle of alcohol.

On the fourth day of not speaking to one another, the fourth day of Mattheo treating the astronomy tower ledges as his new bed, you decided to go visit him.

He didn't hear you walk up the stairs, only startling when your silky voice cut through the cool air. "You're going to fall to your death if you get any closer."

Mattheo's head whipped around so sharply he dropped the cigarette he was fiddling between his fingers. It was immediately crushed beneath his foot.

He stood abruptly.

"I can leave if—"

"No, don't. Please."

He sat back down again. "I- I wrote and rewrote a letter apologizing probably a billion times over, but none of them sounded quite right. All of them started with I'm sorry and I didn't think that would cut it."

"It wouldn't have." You words were blunt, but the look in your eyes was softer.

"I know. I didn't want to keep asking for you to forgive me." His gaze was downcast. "I remember everything I said to you. They have replayed in my mind over and over again."

He laughed bitterly.

"I grabbed your wrist." His voice caught in his throat. "Merlin, and you looked at me like you didn't know who I was."

Your jaw clenched. "I didn't."

It was like a bludger to the stomach.

"You looked like, I don't know, something different."

Olive skin turned alabaster as as the blood drained from his face. He couldn't breathe.

"Love, I am so sorry. I don't want you to feel like you can't trust me, or- or, fuck, that I would ever put my hands on you. You know… my father and that I would never do what he did to me to someone else. I've been wracking my brain to find something else to say, what would make this better, but if I'm being honest, I can't figure anything out. I'm scared it won't be enough."

"Matty," you sighed, slowly walking over to him, hands finding the sides of his face. "I know that. I'm sorry that I've been ignoring you, too."

His mouth opened in a silent gasp. "Don't, please, don't apologize to me. You've done nothing, and have never done anything wrong."

Your head shook. "I could have said something to you."

He said your name in a sigh. "This is what I mean," Mattheo hesitated when he raised his hand before placing it on your forearm. "You apologize for things that don't need to be apologized for. I told you things like I don't need your help, which is so far from untrue. I don't know where I'd be without you."

A small, pursed-lip smile graced your lips.

"Thank you. Something you need to understand more than me is that I don't know where I'd be without you, too. Just, I have to stress, if you do something like that again, act like that again, I- I don't know what I'll do, but I know that it will be your second, and last, chance."

His hands skimmed across your arms and moved to your midsection, where he squeezed you into a hug.

"I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you, I promise, darling."

You mirrored his action, hugging him so tightly you thought he may have trouble breathing. "Good. Will you come to classes and dinner, now?"

"Only if you're there."

"Always," you whispered.

summary: mattheo and alcohol don't mix, add in a heartbreaking quidditch loss, and everything goes to shit

warnings: angst, yelling, anger, cursing words: 2.5k

based on this ask!! :)

✦ Who would take you back to his villa in Italy, showing you off to his neighbors, who always asked about the girl he talked about so frequently.

hii I'm literally in love with how you write mattheo 🥹 would you mind writing mattheo x reader's firsts? Like their first time holding hands, hugging, snuggling, kissing, etc.

(also if you wanna add this, reader and mattheo could both be kind of slow to trust people, so they take things really slow and it ends up making their firsts even cuter!)

Avatar
Aww, yes, of course! I'm not sure if you meant firsts with each other of firsts overall so I went with firsts of each other… I may write something longer for this later on (maybe mini series)! Hopefully this satisfies your ask LOL, still getting the hang of this writing thing I fear

Mattheo would approach you with his hands in his pockets, fingers twitching against his dark slacks. He thought anxiety only bubbled deep in the back of his throat when he saw the long road leading to the Riddle Manor; apparently, he had thought wrong. Walking over to you was, basically, the most nerve-wracking thing he had done in his life. You looked like an angel sitting on a sun-soaked bench tucked away in the corner of the courtyard. When you looked that sweet, the only thing he could do was ask you out.

He would quickly morph into something far more solemn and embarrassed when you stared blankly at him, bright eyes narrowing in the strip of light so perfectly slanted across your face. His lips pursed, growing thin as you blubbered, seemingly in disbelief that anyone would approach you. You only said yes when he swore on Merlin that it would only be simple, and 'Hardly even a date.'

And, when the two of you walked to Hogsmeade for your first date (that's not a date), Mattheo felt less like the Riddle he was supposed to be and more like a puzzle your wide-eyed stare had solved in two seconds flat. As the two of you walked to Hogsmeade, approximately six safe inches between the two of you, Mattheo watched you shiver, the snow and wind biting so fiercely at the round apples of your cheeks that blood pooled in a decadent shade of red. He shifted closer, one hand delicately brushing against yours.

"Cold?" He murmured. You nodded, head downturned.

Ever the gentleman, he slowed down and wrapped his coat around your shoulders with a grin. His smile got wider when your back straightened slowly, and you slipped a timid hand into his. If he had more self-restraint, he would have giggled. For now, he was going to keep it to himself.

At the end of the date (of course, he paid for your dinner), he walked you to your dorm door, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet as he watched you fiddle with your stubborn doorknob. And it was embarrassing how nervous he felt when your turned around, your cheeks slowly returning to their normal color, but your lips staying that sweet cold-nipped shade he adored so much.

When he finally took that chance and asked if he could kiss you, somehow becoming even more attracted to you when you blinked those big eyes at him before saying yes, you nodded with a little more confidence than you thought you would.

Merlin, and when his lips first slotted against yours, the only thing he could think was that your mouth against his would make hell feel cold. His arms wrapped around you, one large palm cradling the back of your head, the other resting on your midsection, his hand flexing against clothed skin like he needed something to ground him to reality.

You broke away, running your hand down the side of your face as you laughed—anxiety-ridden.

"Was that too much?" He whispered.

"No, I'm bad at… actually, just nervous. All the time."

"You make me nervous. I don't usually do this, and I can't believe I admitted that."

"Must be fate."

"Fate," he breathed. "Yeah."

"I guess this wasn't 'hardly a real date.'" You smiled coyly.

"It was my goal to make it a real one."

idk how good this is bc it was written kind of fast, but hopefully still fluffy enough that it works
