I want to say something about Klaus

I’ve been waiting a very long time to see this movie, and when I finally could I loved it to pieces. But the ending broke my heart- in more ways than one.

There will be no “tldr” here because my feelings about this film are too strong to let me minimalize what I have to say about it (but I might have to make a part 2 since this is pretty big). If you don’t agree with me, that’s fine, it’s okay, I don’t blame you. I won’t tell you you’re wrong, because in your own life you’re as obligated as ever to have an opinion of your own, correct or not. One other thing I want to say before I start rambling is that this will be messy. Also I do not- nor have ever- claimed to be a critic, and this is not a review. This is just a single person on the internet expressing their opinion, and for the love of all that is holy let’s keep it at that.

Foreword over, on to my pure thoughts. Oh, and spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen the movie yet. No matter what I think about it it’s definitely worth a watch, and going into this without seeing it will probably confuse some folks. Maybe.

I’m in the process of trying to find a way to draw Mogens in my style without getting annoyed with myself that I can’t draw him 1:1 with his actual look (most the time I can’t draw characters i love how they look in their respective styles and I’m sad about it)

I've seen lots of people on here say that Mogens is very similar to Disney's version ofJohn Silver from Treasure Planet so here he is in some of his poses. Bonus! Sille in the last sketch being given a good ol' pep talk.

Mogens Appreciation Post

Mogens had, in my opinion, one of the best character arcs in the film. Though he isn’t seen much in the latter half of the movie, his final speaking scene showed his progression.

It was subtle, but effective.

He immediately noticed that Jesper was unhappy to leave Smeerensburg and he showed concern. For all of his teasing and snark, Mogens had grown to like Jesper as a person and the changes he made to the town, and he knew that something needed to be said.

But the ferryman also knew he wasn’t the one to talk to Jesper about this. He knew that he needed his father, and he used his casual surveillance and sarcasm to lead Jesper’s father to talk to him.

This is the ideal character arc. Mogens remains the same snarky, emotionally-distant, sarcastic person that we all loved, but he’s also become more compassionate and reaches out to help in his own way where he once would have ignored the problem.

It wasn’t a drastic upheaval of everything that Mogens had been. His personality wasn’t filtered into something that he wasn’t. He was essentially the same, warts and all.

The largest change had occurred internally, where they truly counted.

And I think that’s amazing character progression.

“To me, Mogens is a very hurt human being who has checked out of life and emotionally keeps everyone at a distance. His goal is pleasure, and making the pursuit of pleasure your ultimate goal leads to a meaningless existence. He is the kind of character that could be really irritating and one-dimensional if not handled with some level of charm and subtext. With every moment of snark, I tried to handle it with an equal measure of charm.”
