Offerings for the Dead

Most people are reblogging an ask I answered long ago about offerings to give to the dead. It’s long overdue, but I’ve finally typed it up into an actual cohesive post.

~ Herbs ~

  • Lavender, for peace in passing on
  • Thyme, to give peace to those who have died from violence
  • Apple, a common Irish symbol for the dead, which I often give to my ancestors
  • Pomegranates, myth of Persephone and all that
  • Rosemary, for remembrance
  • Myrrh, commonly used in necromancy, also used to give off good vibes
  • Chervil, often used in rituals for the dead
  • Mugwort, usually used to aid divination and communication with the dead. I also give it as an offering
  • Bay, same as mugwort (my mentality is that these herbs will help “send” the offerings to the dead)
  • Lemonbalm, for peace and healing
  • Wormwood, to strengthen the communication with the dead, as well as healing and revenge
  • Frankincense, a traditional herb (usually incense) to honor the dead

~ Flowers ~

  • Calendula, for blessings and eternal love
  • Rose petals (or the flower) for love and healing
  • Marigolds, perfect for ancestor worship (as well as spirit work salves and tea)
  • Lilies, for a sense of security and togetherness; ideal for children
  • Orchids, for balanced emotions and adoration; ideal for former lovers
  • Daisies, also ideal for former lovers and lost family members
  • Tulips, to spread happiness
  • Dandelions, ideal for connecting with certain spirits (especially when drunk as a tea)

~ Liquids ~

  • Water, a traditional offering for the dead, often left out for passing spirits
  • Wine or other alcohol
  • Juice, namely pomegranate or beet
  • Oils, such as olive oil, pomegranate oil, coconut, almond, vinegar

~ Other ~

  • Stones or crystals
  • Coins
  • Tobacco (I also know some people who use cigarette smoke or ashes)
  • Grains, traditionally brown bread
  • Meat
  • Candles, namely dark colored or earth-toned
  • Cleaning up graveyards, placing offerings on graves and speaking to them also makes a great offering
  • Song and music
  • Anything personal to the person you’re sending the offering to

~ What to do with the Offerings ~

  • Burn herbs or flowers (safely) with a written message to “send” the offering to the soul
  • Leave coins, flowers or herbs on the grave
  • Pour liquid into the earth, or leave them out in a bowl
  • Leave offerings out as a “standing offering” for the dead who pass through (idea from @arachnospooky)

This is SO overdue I’m so sorry but I hope it helps!!

Back on your Witchy Bullshit: A Guide to Getting Back on your Feet after a Lapse

So I’ve recently taken a break from witchcraft for various reasons, mostly terrible mental health. I definitely don’t feel like I can just jump right back into where I left off, so I’m trying to ease myself back into practising. Here’s a few things I’ve been doing, and I’m hoping someone, somewhere might find them useful.

  • Carry crystals/talismans/etc. around with you. Bonus points if it corresponds to your goal, but also just you’re favourite will work really well. Just having something on you that reminds you of your practice will help get you into the mindset of practicing again.
  • Meditate. Meditation is a mainstay of modern witchcraft, so perfecting it is a good start. It doesn’t even have to be witchy meditation at this point, you just want to practice the skill. I like the app Headspace, and you can get it free with student Spotify.
  • Consume witchy media. This could be something like Sabrina if that inspires you to keep practicing, or it could be a book you read that particularly inspired your practice before, a youtuber (I particularly like Anais Alexandre) or a podcast (I particularly like The Witch Wave).
  • Go outside (or to another spiritual place). Nothing makes me want to practice more than walking through the woods or through the fens. If you want to work with nature, that’s a good place to go. For different kind of witches there may be somewhere that works better, just whatever work for you!
  • Leave regular offerings to any deities you work with. You may have also been neglecting your relationship with your Gods, which is entirely fine and happens in normal human relationships too. To rededicate yourself and to keep them in your mind again, try to just leave little bits of food or pieces you find in charity shops/thrift stores. It’s a simple thing you can do that shows your affection.
  • Journal. Keep track of your new journey, so that you can go back and see your progress. You’ll appreciate it when you feel like you’re going to falter and can look back at everything you’ve done so far, and it will make it all feel worth it.
  • Don’t ask too much of yourself. You don’t need to go right back to where you were before, you’re allowed to build your practice up again. Also, consider why you lapsed in the first place, and take that into account. Don’t put yourself in a situation that you can’t keep up with again. You’re allowed to build your practice around any illnesses you may have or anything that might prevent you from practicing in a certain way, even if that’s another hobby or work. Try and build a practice that you can sustain!

Good luck witches, you can do it!  🌘💖🌒

It is the center of your practice. Astrology • You’ve probably heard of astrology, in witchcraft it is used as a form of divination.  Astral projection • Astral projection is a purposeful out-of-body experience where you, well, project a version of your consciousness (also known as an astral body) to a location that is separate from your physical body.  Athame • A ritualistic dagger used as a tool in witchcraft. Palmistry A form of divination where you inspect someones hands and the lines present on them. Pentagram • A symbol that contrary to popular belief is not Satanic in nature, but actually represents the 4 elements and the spirit. Pendulum  A form of divination where a pointed object hung from a chain/string is used. The way the pendulum swings is what determines the results of a reading. Warding • A magickal barrier that protects you from energetic/magickal threats, such as bad spirits or curses even. One such barrier can be formed in many ways. Wicca • A Pagan religion based on nature and the divine Masculine and Feminine. Wheel of the year  A witchy calendar used to track the Sabbats, holidays based on the changing of the seasons.  Yule • One of the sabbats, this one is based on celebrating winter but also the coming of spring. This is also when the dark half of the year ends and the light half begins. - I came up with the idea for this post and was surprised I’d never seen one. So I made this! - Let me know if you have any corrections or additions and I might add them. - I hope this helps someone. Enjoy! Have a lovely day 💖

Ring Magick
Rings have always been used in magick, whether as a form of talisman, amulet, or enhancement in your magick.
One’s hands both have different meanings and attributes, they are not identical nor are they twins, they are sister and work with each other like yin and yang.
Metals also have a large influence on how the energy flowing from your hands are directed, especially when it comes to your intention.

Activating Sigils

There are two types of sigils: active sigils and passive sigils

To activate an Active Sigil you must destroy it by drawing your sigil on a piece of paper or something else and doing one of the following:

- burning

- submerge it in water

- blow sigil away (drawn in sand)

- eat sigil (decorated cookie, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, etc.)

- wash it off

To activate a Passive Sigil you must allow it to remain by doing one of the following:

- draw sigil on an amulet

- annoint something with oil in shape of sigil

- unwashable paint or marker

- carve sigil into a candle or etch it into anything you want (try not to carve sigils in to live trees🌳)

Witchy Goals - I’m going to make one of these with sigils and ogham letters in the coming year. Because of reasons.

Can I just say that I love love LOVE that this beautiful protective symbol is hanging from a command hook

🌷🍰 Beltane 🌷🍰

🌷 Also known as May Day

🌷 Art By: Jacqueline De Leon on Instagram

________________________________________________________________

🍰 When Is Beltane?

🌷 Northern Hemisphere:

30April - 1 May

It can be celebrated either day or is traditionally celebrated from the night of 30 April until the day of 1 May

🌷 Southern Hemisphere:

31 October - 1 November

________________________________________________________________

🍰 What Is Beltane?

🌷 Beltane is celebrated because we are now at the peak of spring; the sun god has now taken over. For many of us, summer is arriving, or is coming very soon. It’s super joyous, happy, exciting day that honours life. The earth is buzzing and all of the earth’s energies are thriving: fertility, sexuality, passion, energy and new life are at their peak of stimulation at this time. Fertility is the main theme for Beltane. The Triple Goddess in her maiden form and the Horned God are finally united and they are bringing new life on the earth. It’s the time of the year when we need to grant luck to the summer months and the growth that is coming. It is one of the solar festivals, the other being Samhain. Beltane represents birth, while Samhain represents death, which is why Beltane is seen as the most important celebration by some people.

________________________________________________________________

🍰 How To Celebrate:

🌷 Beltane celebrations focus on fertility, abundance and all of the amazing gifts that the earth gives us at this time.

________________________________________________________________

🍰 Activities:

🌷 Create amulets made from rose quartz and give them to loved ones, friends and family. This is a gift that can help with positivity and passion and they can help to lower anxiety too. For specific loved ones this can help with the passion and romance between the two of you and it can also calm nerves!

🌷 Flowers and greenery are a huge part of Beltane.

🌷 Create flower crowns.

🌷 Create daisy chains.

🌷 Wear flowers on your body.

🌷 Make a green man mask from leaves.

🌷  Beltane is a time of love, so if you have a loved one that you would like to make a commitment to, this is an excellent time for marriage, handfasting and promise rituals. You may want to plan your ceremony for Beltane.

🌷 Dance round a maypole; this is a pole that is typically made from wood or metal and that has ribbons tied to a wreath around it. The maypole, is a phallic symbol of the male, the wreath around it and the ribbons coming off it, the vagina. We are celebrating fertility and the marriage of the two of them around this time! You can do a traditional maypole dance around this pole holding the ribbons. Look out for nearby maypole festivities - there are probably more than you think; if not you can create one yourself with your loved ones or your coven.

🌷 Also if you have plans to conceive, now is a great and lucky time!

🌷 Another way to celebrate love is just to go for a walk- you could search for a hawthorn tree, make a wish , have a picnic and collect some wild flowers. Share this experience with a friend or loved one or enjoy a solitary walk.

🌷 Spells to cast at this time are love spells and vitality, protection, romance and purification spells. Casting your circles with oats around this time of year is also a good idea! They are a traditional Beltane grain for good luck.

🌷 Light a Beltane fire- have a Beltane fire ritual with your friends and family, serve food and have an outside bonfire. Fires are traditionally to honor our sun gods, and celebrate the warmth and the sun god taking over the cold.

________________________________________________________________

🍰 Altar Ideas

🌷 Decorate it with seasonal spring flowers.

🌷 Drape it with green cloth and ribbons to represent the green earth as it is now here!

🌷 Add birch and hawthorn branches, burnt in your cauldron.

🌷 Light red, pink and green candles.

🌷 Red and pink represent passion, love and fertility, which suit the theme of Beltane.

________________________________________________________________

🍰 Food And Drink

🌷 Oats in all forms; oat cookies, oatmeal, oat bread

🌷 Dairy, cheeses and milks or dairy-free alternatives

🌷 Also spicy food, to represent the element of fire and the sun

🌷 May Day wine

🌷 Vanilla-flavoured foods

🌷 Fairy Cakes

🌷 Ice Cream

🌷 Sweet breads

🌷 Elderflower and other flowery-flavoured cordials

________________________________________________________________

🍰 Crystals

🌷 Relevant crystals to carry around with you this time of the year and to meditate with, use in divination and spell work, place at your altar and, around Beltane, give as gifts to loved ones and partners, are:

🌷 Rose Quartz

🌷 Emerald

🌷 Sunstone

🌷 Pink Tourmaline

🌷 Beryl

🌷 Pink angel aura quartz

Black Salt, and its Usages in Both Black and White Witchcraft

Image Credit: Juniper Wildwalk ,(post author) ** BY-SA-NC

So, as a continuation of my new little chain of posts on black magick, I’m going to be talking about the substance known as black salt. This is a common element of many curses and charms, but is also protective and can be used for white magickal purposes with ease.

What is Black Salt?

Black salt is, well, salt with things that are black added. It is not the same as culinary black salt which is rock salt with activated charcoal added to it: in witchcraft, black salt usually has black pepper, crushed charcoal and sometimes dyes or other black things added. Crushed shells or rocks are also pretty popular.

My own black salt uses a mixture of crushed charcoal and pepper, but the wood I get the charcoal from varies depending on the usage. Just for general usages, however, I tend to use oak or eucalyptus because it makes good charcoal for small-scale production.

If you want your salt to be especially good for curses and black magick, add a few crushed chili seeds or a little sulphur.

If you want your salt to be especially good for protection and white magick, add some iron scrapings or a little cinnamon.

Witchy Uses for Black Salt

  • Black salt is protective. It’s not just black magick that can benefit from the inclusion of black salt! It’s a powerful protective charm that absorbs negative energies and curses into itself and will rid you of their harmful influence. Sprinkle it around the doors and windows of your house, and no negative powers will be able to get inside. Replace it often, every fortnight or so. Carry a phial of it around with you to protect you on the go, and rub some into your skin if you are under the influence of black magick.
  • Black salt is reflective. If you wish to not simply nullify or absorb negative energy but to actively reflect it back upon those who cast it, rub the salt into your door and window frames and on the four point of your bed, whilst reciting a spell that energy shall return upon those who sent it. Make the spell up yourself for the greatest power!
  • Black salt is potent. Black salt can of course be used for cursing, and in doing so it add an element of darkness to any spell. It is also good for increasing the potency of curses, especially curses involved in repulsion, repelling, or driving people out of places. Sprinkle it over somewhere that they regularly visit or live in to make them want to leave that place, or use it in any spell designed to banish a person or thing from your life or to keep a thing or person away from you. It also makes a good addition to hot foot powder, and often forms a basic ingredient of goofer dust from hoodoo.
  • Black salt is symbolic. It symbolises dark or new moons, eclipses, and waning moons. It also symbolises the Crone of Wicca, and the Morrígna of Celtic lore. It is used to represent many things, including war, strife and conflict, and Order turning to Chaos (which is not, in and of itself, necessarily a bad or “evil” thing).
  • Black salt is spiritual. It can be used to greatly increase the strength of trances, and is also a very useful method preventing those same trances from summoning negative spirits that may harm your absent body. It can also be sprinkled over ground that you wish to purify before you perform rituals or sabbat work, especially when they are related to Samhain, Mabon, Yule or Imbolc (the “dark” sabbats because they form the Winter and Autumn set).

*****

Black salt is excellent to use in conjunction with sage smoke-cleansing, as the sage will purify and drive away negativity and the black salt will absorb what is left.

I hope that helps someone!

Ostara Honey Cake

This will be my first Ostara so I’ve been putting together my recipes for the event. The following recipe is a dairy and egg free cake with a hint of honey; a simple recipe I’ve modified. It can even be gluten free if you substitute a gluten free all purpose flour (I personally like Bob’s Mill) Perfect desert for the sabbat! It’s simple, not overly sweet, and I’ll be putting a light lemon glaze on top, but it would be wonderful plain. A perfect finish to bring in Spring/Summer.

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup honey, warmed 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons white vinegar 1 ½ tablespoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons oil 2 cups water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease 2 – 9 inch round cake pans then dust with flour. Warm honey in 10 second intervals in microwave until it moves around bowl like a liquid (DO NOT let it boil) Add the flour, sugar, honey, baking soda, and salt to a large bowl. Add the water, oil, vinegar, and vanilla. Mix with a whisk until well-blended. Do not over beat. It will still turn out even if there are a few small lumps. Divide the batter between the 2 greased cake pans. Bake on a middle rack of oven for 35 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Let cool before frosting, dust with powdered sugar, or dive in while warm with a fork. Mmm, tasty!🐰🐥🐏🍰

Black Salt Recipe

Okay my brothers and sisters, so every witch has there own method of making black salt, but I’m going to share how I make mine.

So what is black salt?

Black salt is used to banish negative vibrations, energy and entities by sprinkling it in the corners of your house or to add as a corresponding ingredient in your banishing spells. It is also used to protect your home from negative entities from coming in if one has an issue with invasive spirits like I once did.

Ingredients

  • Cauldron (or fire safe dish)
  • Mortar and Pestle
  • Sea salt
  • Corresponding herbs of choice (I use lavender, black pepper, sage and mint)
  • Activated charcoal
  • A jar or bottle to keep the salt in.

So the first step is to place a piece of charcol in your cauldron and set it ablaze. Wait until the charcol has stopped sparking and until it is glowing hot.

Then, add your herbal ingredients to the cauldron with the intent to purify and banish negative vibrations in the space. Wait until all the herbs are burned to ash and keep adding herbs until you get a fair amount of ash.

Once you have your ashes and your activated charcol dish, cover your cauldron until the charcol dish has fizzed our and is no longer hot. Then collect your ashes and charcol and put it in your mortar and pestle. Grind until all your ingredients are a black powder.

Next is the sea salt. Slowly stir in your sea salt until all you have left in the bowl is black salt. Then safely store your black salt in a jar or bottle.

Enjoy my brothers and sisters!

Blessed be!

Drawing Sigils: My Way

Dedicated to the anon who asked, thank you~ <3

My sigils are basically just a variant of the Witch’s Sigil Wheel. I’ve just added my own flare to it. If you don’t know what that is, it’s this thing, you kind find pictures of it on google pretty easy.

The first thing you’re gonna want to do is come up with your phrase. This will set the sigils intention. We’re gonna use the phrase “The Earth keeps me safe” for this example. Once you’ve got that figured out, pick out the words that are most important to you. We’re going to use “Earth” and “Safe” as our keywords.

(note: traditionally letters that are doubled are taken out, and only single appearing letters make the points.)

Next thing you’re gonna do, is draw lines from one letter to the next. You’ll be making separate lines for each word. Feel free to curve some of these lines, but i think it looks like a mountain or a crystal so we’re gonna keep it c:

And then the next word.

This is really starting to look like a crystal in my eyes! Now it’s time to add some flare. One thing I like to do is add circles around letters that have multiple points on them. And I add crossing lines to any other line that doesn’t have an angle or connection.

To really long lines, I like to add another line parallel to it.

The last part, make it personal! Add some sort of your own flare to it.

I played around with the crystal idea that I was getting, and added things to make it look sparkling and an arrow in the middle to represent protection.

Lastly I like to keep my sigils in circles, but feel free to skip this step and call it done! Here’s what I came up with!

If you make one, please reblog with a picture! I’d love to see ^u^ Hopefully this helps.
