Many of Tephra’s living creatures can produce offspring with the spirits of the World Between. However, a half-elemental or half-fey is usually unable to have its own children. There are exceptions, like the giants, which have become a viable species. And one of the most dangerous and terrible is the Valcyenea.
Nobody knows what kind of fey spirit shares its blood with the great whales, but it has granted them supernatural powers and cunning. A valcyenea also has a fey compulsion to seek out and spend time with mortals. This means taunting sailors and showing off their majesty to coastal villages, being much more visible than an average whale.
Valcyenae glow with a pale blue-purple light, and can leave a phosphorescent trail behind them if they choose. A creature who sees the glow close at hand may find themselves obsessed with following the valcyenea, regardless of the danger or distance. Their tendrils have a venomous sting that makes affected individuals vulnerable to their other enchanting abilities! In the open sea, they hunt by luring tiny fish or crustaceans into a bite-sized group.
