My review on Fantastic Four: First Steps 100/10
The 4 together? Fantastic. Oozing with retro sci-fi vibes. The suit looks comfy, like a sweater, cotton-like material. Matt Shakman delivers a visually stunning and vibrant take on Fantastic Four: First Steps, bringing a retro-futuristic New York City to life with flair and imagination. From the stylized 1960s inspired design to the awe inspiring space sequences, the film feels like a breath of fresh air in the superhero genre. It’s bold, stylish, and fully embraces its comic book roots in the best way possible.
Rather than getting lost in multiverse chaos, Fantastic Four focuses on a grounded, character-driven story about the highs and lows of heroism. The stakes are high and emotionally resonant, though the humor occasionally softens their impact. Still, the tone strikes a solid balance between heartfelt and fun. Michael Giacchino’s score is a powerhouse. Sweeping, grand, and unforgettable. What a goosebumps!
This may be Marvel Studios most unapologetically comic book film to date. It dives right into the story without unnecessary buildup, blending sharp storytelling with world building and action-packed set pieces. The film doesn’t waste time, it moves quickly but still manages to flesh out the team and their relationships.
The chemistry among the core cast is electric. Julia Garner is absolutely kickass as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer. Her surfing sequences are great. Joseph Quinn shines as Johnny Storm, bringing energy, swagger, and real emotion to the role. His dynamic with Sue, Reed, and Ben feels genuine and lived in. Ebon Moss-Bachrach brings depth, and Reed Richard is my favorite. His script is sharp and well crafted, elevated with strong performances by Pedro Pascal. Reed multitasking and handling everything at once and still staying sane shows how strong he really is. Vanessa Kirby delivers some of the most memorable and powerful scenes, honors the motherhood and the enduring power of hope. A scene that will likely be remembered for years. The family dynamic is so strong that it’s genuinely difficult to choose a favorite member.
Galactus. If anything, I wish the film ran a little longer just to give us more of Galactus. Best to watch in IMAX. Even when he’s not on screen, his presence is overwhelming, like it surrounds the film like a cosmic force, putting an immense pressure on the Fantastic Four. It’s that kind of cosmic dread you don’t just see, you feel. It’s clear the Four didn’t sign up for this, but they have to.
Still, as an opening to Phase 6, First Steps is a thrilling, heartfelt, and stylish reintroduction of Marvel’s first family. And the end credits. I’m ready for Avengers Doomsday!
