The difference between headcannoning straight characters as gay vs gay characters as straight is that a lot of the time, these characters aren’t even confirmed to be straight the same way that queer characters are. Literally how often is a character confirmed in canon to be straight? Not by dating the opposite gender or “acting straight,” saying something like “you don’t get it, I like guys” or smth like that. Not very often.
In conclusion, next time someone is insulting you for shipping characters in gay relationships, just ask them how they know that the characters are actually straight
