Honestly I think the compulsion to describe things about your own original characters as "a headcanon", silly as it sounds and incorrect as it is, makes complete sense when you understand it as "this is a thing that is true about this character to me that I want to tell people about but do not currently intend to include in any actual published narrative about the character."
You see I draw and post all this soulful ass ship art of unpopular pairings and will continue to do so because. One day there will be someone who will watch/play [thing] for the very first time. They will have no prior exposure to the fandom. They will think, on their own, that [unpopular ship] is nice. They will look [unpopular ship] up and find my one of a kind, absolutely wicked freaking goldmine. I will feed them for decades. It is entirely possible.
