“The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”

— Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)

god I'm such a slut for Chinese eggplant in garlic sauce *decides it’s inaccurate to refer to myself as a slut in light of my minimal sexual activity* if The Enemy discovered my ardor for Chinese eggplant in garlic sauce, they would gain a significant strategic advantage

i genuinely can't fucking deal with the larger internet anymore holy shit what the fuck are you people TALKING about. i am at my limit with this stupid bullshit. who the fuck cares if a man is hired to draw medical diagrams for young girls jesus christ we're pearl clutching about medical illustrations now? next you're gonna tell me male pediatricians shouldn't advise parents on their kids' vulva issues? male surgeons shouldn't be in the room when performing a procedure where a woman's breasts or vulva might be exposed? male researchers shouldn't conduct gynecological medical research? sure. better for men to live in ignorance and NEVER ally themselves with us to expand access to sexual education and reproductive healthcare i fucking guess. Twenty thousand likes. i hate it here KILL ME

THIS is the post that got me my first ever anon hate. i'd like to thank the academy tbh

also not related but can ppl on this post being like "yeah STOP being mean to men!!" pls stop cuz that's not the point of what i was saying 💀 i'm not mad bc someone was mean to a man i'm mad bc feminism is being hijacked by bioessentialist conservative Christian moralist bullshit where the goal seems to be the complete and total segregation of women from men instead of like, the material improvement of women's lives. i don't care if some intsta commenter is mean to men i care that feminism is culturally turning into Nu Conservatism

i also just want to note when i was a lil autistic kid with a special interest in ag dolls this series (the american girl library) was the greatest thing to ever happen to my social skills. not only did they have stuff about puberty (that have since been updated to include trans friendly information!) but also books about friendship (used advice to take a respectful break from a friendship with someone i was arguing with over nothing a lot which meant when we were a bit older and realised our undiagnosed neurodivergence had been clashing we went right back to being close because we didn't have a big dramatic breakup) and tough conversations (i mentally revist the page with premade social scripts for condolences every time someone loses a pet or person or houseplant) and easy sleepover baking recipes. and i think this is ironically part of why I was so late to come out because agl presented girlhood as this totally achievable thing for everyone to learn how to do, without any makeup tutorials or telling you to be quiet and take abuse from authority.

now, im not a girl and not american anymore so im out in the big wide world without my trusty instruction manuals, but i always wanna point out how surprisingly lovely this series is because i am so so glad it exists as a resource for young people

Something I really struggle to get people to understand is that like. Sometimes there was no intentional homoerotic subtext, the author was just extremely misogynistic. Sometimes the author wasn't "secretly shipping" those two men, the author literally just hates women so much that they see them as being literally incapable of relationships with depth. Like this is kind of a big thing with misogyny actually. A lot of extremely misogynistic people truly believe that a man can only have meaningful and complex relationships with other men because they literally just think women are so inferior they only exist to birth children and clean the house. It's like when people say along the lines of "no one worships exclusively men quite like straight men do". It's just that phenomenon actually. That happens to be manifesting in a raging misogynist's writing. Writing a man character who literally only puts effort into his friendships with other men while completely ignoring his literal girlfriend or wife is actually an extremely straight thing to write. And that doesn't mean you can't ship those men or that there are no stories with actual intentional homoerotic subtext. I just think it's important to be able to recognize extreme misogyny in writing and acknowledge it without brushing it off and assuming good intentions when literally all evidence is screaming that this was a misogynistic writing choice and not a representing gay men choice.

the thing about "no one is talking about this!" posts is that at best they are weird guilt trips trying to make you feel personally responsible for the fact that you haven't heard about one specific thing happening that no one has mentioned to you. at worst they are just wrong because the op turns out to have no idea what people are talking about because they've never listened to another person in their life. either way I am not reblogging that

you can definitely have a deep understanding of an academic field with just a bachelor's degree, or in fact with no college degree at all. but if somebody cites the fact that they majored in this field in undergrad as evidence of their expertise that's a pretty clear tell that they don't understand shit

if your bachelor's program did you any good at all one of the main things you would have learned from it is how much you were just barely beginning to scratch the surface of this field

wikipe-tan bashfully acquiescing into doing more and more embarrassing kinks in the name of academic thoroughness

“You… you need a p-public domain image for bimbofication?” and so on and so forth

I love this image so much. it’s so lovingly made. it’s so earnest. it was made with a level of passion and delicacy exclusively reserved for perverts. this was not “we need an image for shipping discourse haha wouldn’t this be silly” this was made with more yearning than the human body can bear

I’m still not over this. If you just showed me this picture with no context and asked me what article it was from I would guess it was a pastiche of some kind of pastoralist art movement, Romantic in the 19th century sense, a (chaste) expression of passion, youth, and sublimity. And then you’d tell me that actually it’s the Weberian ideal-type representation of age gap yuri.

This is why a pervert is like a type of mystic to me. They see what others cannot.

now everyone gets to see the art

YOU: So, what is it? What lies at the the core of moralism?

  1. HALF-LIGHT [SUCCESS]: Fear.
  2. EMPATHY [SUCCESS]: Love.

What if I start a trend called "No one nuts November" where everyone writes about their favorite characters having bad sex that sucks and isn't fun.

Okay so I made a list of 30 (well, 29 actually) prompts I am releasing into the wild. The point of this is that at least one of the participants are not having a good time.

It has 30 prompts for November but feel free to write and post whenever, but please add the tag #No one nuts November or #NoonenutsNovember wherever you post. You do not have to @ or credit this blog if you use any of these prompts.

(Text version under the cut)

I like to imagine that in the Batman ‘89/B:TAS universe there are still people streaming themselves play League of Legends and Minecraft on Twitch, but the webcam weighs 100 kg and has a bunch of metal knobs and switches and the audience all watches on big monochrome CRTs.

shakespeare was so funny for that scene where the antagonist tells the protagonist “let the record show that i AM into women THAT BEING SAID holy shit, thou mars, seeing you here is like an even better version of my wedding night. like WAY better. i’ve been dreaming about you every night for years, and in my dreams we take off each other’s armor and beat each other to a pulp and i wake up all hot and sticky 👍”

THANK YOU

Friendly unfriendly reminder that "Ovulation is like an animal being in heat and makes you stupid" has been a keystone of western misogyny pretty much since Europe worked out what periods are.

“the secondary characters don’t have as much interiority as the leads” well yeah you see none of these people are real, they exist within a limited narrative framework and by the very nature of their functions don’t get as much development as the focus. hope this helps.
