2009 vs 2022!

Good way I like to get out of art block/help my low self esteem lol is to draw an old sketch and see how far you’ve come!

I've really hit this phase where I didn't draw for like 2 months because I was just busy with school and other projects. Now, when I came back and tried to draw my favorite subject (my own character) again, nothing was coming out right at all. It's like I'd forgotten how to draw her or something. It's really upsetting because I was so confident in my art like 2 months ago and everything was looking at least decent. I've lost my mojo. Any advice or words of wisdom? Maybe I'm freaking myself out?

Hi! I have experienced the same thing many times through different life transitions! Here's some things I've found helped me, and I welcome others to weigh in on the comments too!

  • Sometimes I have to do a few days of drawing on printer paper since it feels a lot less pressure
  • I have also traced over my own characters/parts of my drawings before if I feel like I can't draw them right as I imagine. Once I took a very long break and had to watch a few timelapses of my own art lmao
  • Low stakes studies focusing on fundamentals like color, lighting, texture, composition, etc really helps get you get back on track.
  • Can be even lower stakes like drawing circles or lines just to kind of get the muscle memory back
  • Doing art challenges online to get me out of my comfort zone can help me with my more familiar/comfy art topics too
  • Switching up media sometimes helps me, I will bring out acrylic paint/watercolors/pencils if I have been in a digital art rut or vice-versa (digital really helps me do color studies without wasting tons of money in paint)
  • taking a step back if it's super frustrating to me and leaning into other hobbies
  • sending time in nature/walks often helps if it's a creativity block

Hope this helps!

[1] Color Zones of the Face [Tried to find source, I think it’s here ]

Two brilliant skin tutorials. Do not use flat colors for skin! Underpainting is important for realistic, vivid skin. Remember, underneath your skin is fat, muscles, red blood, blue veins, bones.

Consider reblogging this to support the original artist. I recommend following them as well!

Hey so I wanted to ask any tips for Backgrounds?

I'm able to do drawings but it's the background that bothers me

I don't know what to draw in background that would fit with the drawing

It seems so hard

Hi there! Great question and I think this one is really stylistic. For me, I find best backgrounds happen with a lot of experimentation honestly. I think for backgrounds it depends on what depth of field you want as well as colors and mood. For instance, sometimes backgrounds look great when very blurry to add depth to the whole piece. You can go for more or less depth of field and that can change the detail. Pay attention to lighting so it looks like it fits more.

Sometimes it can help to start with a super simple background based on complimentary colors (or even analogous! really whatever your heart desires). Sometimes adding abstract shapes can lead to happy accidents, or random textures. This can help your subject stand out a ton!

For more detailed backgrounds, I think sometimes planning with thumbnails can help a lot! If you are traditional, using layers on a digital canvas to plan(or even separate sheets of paper and cut out your foreground/midground/background) can help you plan and try different ones! I also sometimes get stuck and just look at reference photos for inspo! (be sure to reference your references properly and check licenses!)

I have this article I wrote on landscapes and environment painting if that's more what you meant as well!

Sorry this is more of a ramble, but I hope this helps!

Somewhat goofy tool, but hopefully you enjoy!

Also, fixed some broken links on the site as well!

Let me know what you draw!

I've found this nifty reference website for artists called www.dimensions.com that has a database of exact measurements for various objects, plants, and animals

They have a premium version with 3D models that I haven't tried yet, but it's definitely very informative if you're trying to get the anatomy and proportions for different species of animals right!
