while i am all for transformative work on fiction its always funny when people claim stuff thats literally denied by the text right under their nose. like i am truly sorry that you think benji and sybelle becoming vampires means armand is never able to heal or that they're useless characters that drag him down or whatever but thats you. 👁👁🫵 like. thats you projecting into the character when you say that. thats an au headcanon type of read of the actual books because every evidence on page points in the absolute opposite direction.
the next we see of armand after benji and sybelle become vampires is the best the guy has been in all his life. its established as early as the FIRST BOOK that armand thrives on having vampire company. he's not a lone wolf. he needs and enjoys coven life. after he forms a lil coven with benji and sybelle, armand THRIVES. the next time we see armand relevant, he's in a beautifully decorated home in upstate new york supporting benji's career choices and sybelle's hobbies, living with louis, creating safe spaces for his loved ones, welcoming lestat's other fledglings, getting ready to host this big vampire get together, and he's pretty chill and happy about it all. in fact, we see him actively talking about his woes and issues openly with another character and getting counsel/advice on it by an ancient vampire which is as close as these characters are ever going to get to therapy lmao armand is doing generally MUCH better than he's ever done with benji and sybelle in his life.
its ok if you dont like it.
its fine to project and use fiction to process your own issues.
but saying benji and sybelle's presence in armand's life didnt vastly improve it is just. factually wrong.
What drives me mad about Armand as a character is that the boy lives on the surface. No matter how refined, authoritative, or omniscient he can be, the boy in him always rises to the surface because that is who is calling all the shots. Everything else is just a hat he wears when he needs to. I wonder what he’d be like if he could rest
The DM chapter in QotD is a pretty fantastic glimpse at what Armand is like when he’s not constantly on the defensive. He plays with blenders, in-sink garbage disposals, microwaves, telescopes, and other gadgets. He binge-watches every piece of media he can get his hands on. He subjects Daniel to his absolute favorites from among those over and over and over. He gets his hands on a camcorder and makes weird home videos; he also drags Daniel around cities with it so that they can interview randos about utterly mundane shit. He drags Daniel to the cinema and to theater productions. He’s curious, nosy, obnoxious, vibrant, and alive. He smiles. Most importantly, he laughs.
Who knew that taking an autistic 17 year old and making every single bad thing happen to him and then giving him a cult to lead, blenders to use, and a freaky mortal boy to stalk would be such an incredible character concept
lestat is a delightful and infuriating protagonist. the part in TVL where he loses his shit when marius shows him the king and queen is so very endearing (well it’s endearing if you’re not armand i guess)
my observation from 2 months of kittens
