when i was a teenager i used to catch myself thinking "i'm really glad i'm alive right now because of all the cool personal technologies that exist" and when i did i'd think it through and reckon that well, its not like teenagers in the 70s and 80s knew they didnt have ipods or facebook or whatever. they were also happy with the tech they had. and i'd reason that in the future there would be more fun technologies that i dont know i'm missing out on right now and the future will be an even cooler time to exist

anyway i was dead fucking wrong about that last part. i hate personal technologies now. i miss having an ipod that doesnt advertise shit to me and i miss when my htc wildfire didnt harass me 45 times a day to install an ai assistant and then install it anyway when i say no and i miss when the internet wasnt 5 websites all of which i have to log into and i miss when i didnt need an app to talk to my landlord. sorry past me you were actually right about 2009

I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. I remember wishing there was a better way to have all my music with me than to lug around heavy books of cds or tapes. I remember the constant struggle to have enough batteries, and when cell phones started showing up, thinking, I wish everything was rechargeable like those phones are. When I got my first iPod it was the greatest thing I'd ever owned. Even then, I remember looking at my flip phone and thinking, I wish we were already at the point where it was standard to be able to check emails on these things (the technology existed but it was crazy expensive). I even remember looking at my laptop as I watched a Netflix DVD and thinking, if people an upload and download pirated movies, surely that'll get monetized soon so I can watch stuff faster?

In short, I didn't grow up with ipods or facebook. I was one of the first to join the latter when they expanded it outside of ivy league colleges. It was fun. I found people I'd lost touch with but it wasn't awkward and we didn't have to be best friends. My first iPod was gorgeous. It looked like a Yoko Ono art piece. My first smart phone was wonderful. It had the internet, which I needed for work, a bigger screen than my flip phones did, and the touch screen felt cool and futuristic.

And you know what OP? I 1000000% agree with you. Past you was completely right about 2009. The only problem I had with my first iPod is that it needed more storage. I don't need to see album covers. I don't need color. I don't need it to be part of my phone. I don't need my phone to make it necessary for every company I ever buy one thing from to give me an app for it. I don't need social media that exists to sell me things and steal my data and push lifestyle influencers on me to sell me more things. I just want a pretty iPod with lots of memory, a simple phone that's practical, and a way to say, "hey cute kids" to my friend from 8th grade without having to talk to them beyond that. That's it. It's all gotten so much worse because it's no longer for us, it's all for the companies making money off of us. Because selling us the product wasn't enough, they had to make us the product.

the problem with tumblr spells is all of you lil sluts are casting and not giving it time to charge so you're all casting cantrips and not 9th level death spells. everyone wants to be the one to take them down no one wants to be the one who assists

we're going to try again witha little but minimal casting

IT will happen in August of 2026. like to charge and reblog to cast but cast sparingly

Wait stop. everyone +like now and spread it a little but cast on the same day in August. lets try August 6th or something.

CAST NOW

I was talking with a friend yesterday about how dog-piling can disincentivize people from doing what is ostensibly being asked for (taking accountability, apologizing, promising to make changes to future behaviour, etc). which sucks, because there are probably well intentioned people out there who deserve all three of those things, but any sort of Statement just ends up dumping gasoline on the fire.

this is because: you are giving the worst people involved the attention they want, you're giving them Fresh Drama Content, and you're letting them know that you can be made to do things. it's not in their interest to say "alright, you've worded things a bit clumsily, but you're on the right track and we think you mean well," because that ends the party.

and if you're thinking, who cares about what randos on tumblr say, your main concern should be acting in accordance to your morals – WELL! if you're a creative whose income is tied to your online reputation, these sorts of campaigns can directly impact your ability to pay bills. which is very, very scary. and if you're any flavour of marginalized, you probably came onto a site like tumblr seeking community, and the thought of losing that community can be painful. in these cases, the best way to survive a dog-piling is "grey-rocking", or making yourself as boring and non-reactive as possible until their attention shifts to other targets.

so just to summarize: you are rewarded for ignoring everything, and heavily punished for apologizing and taking accountability, and yes, that is pretty fucked up.

This distinctive leather armor first appeared in 1991, worn by Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham in 𝑹𝒐𝒃𝒊𝒏 𝑯𝒐𝒐𝒅: 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒔.   It returned the following year in 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒑𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒖𝒔: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚, where it was worn by Mathieu Carrière as King John.   The piece made another appearance in 1995, when it was spotted on an uncredited extra in 𝑩𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕.   See where else this piece was used and explore its full costume history: Bit.ly/AncMed026

Things that I knew about: that the mass incarceration of people in the USA , particularly black men, has direct ties to/is an extension of slavery. Things I did not know: this specific shit about Louisiana HOLY FUCK this is evil.

Grew up next to Angola. It’s much worse than you think

I wonder how many people are imprisoned for weed

I’m from Mississippi and it’s like this in my home town. Enslaved prisoners clean roadways, pick cotton, everything they’ve done since before slavery was supposedly ended. What they teach in schools is nothing but propaganda.

I hate that ‘bad dream’ just means ‘nightmare’ instead of ‘shitty quality dream.’ I had a bad dream last night. It wasn’t scary it just didn’t make a lot of narrative sense

i must not go to grad school grad school is the soul-killer grad school is the little-death that brings total obliteration i will face my desire for praise and intellectual stimulation i will permit it to pass over me and through me and when it has gone past i will turn my inner eye to see its path where it has gone there will be nothing
