here is an uh, warning, based on experiences i have had in the past with multiple versions of this if you have intrusive thoughts and OCD, taking psychadelics runs a risk of making these much worse, potentially in the medium-long term. the reason being here that the salience-amplification and plasticty and thoughts-unbound-from-self can be not great things to be running while having these badly now, in my understanding, psychedelics are sometimes noted as benefiting, rather than making worse, OCD. i can buy that, it might be YMMV. but speculatively, maybe a distinction is: if the fears here are more "internal" rather than "external", that is, less that you are afraid you will suddenly do something sudden and concrete and more that say, you are afraid of adopting certain worldviews, believing certain things, or having certain like orders of priorities in life or caring about some things more or less, then that might be more reason for psychadelics to harm rather than help: because the plasticity and salience boosting seems like its actually directly having the feared outcome, and honestly to some extent might even actually move things in the direction of it for real (by attaching negative feelings to something, by salience not being fully isolated from subconscious belief or feeling, etc.). which is uh, worrying

ideologically i am pretty pro-psychadelics, i dont think psychadelics are bad, but i have never seen anyone really describe... how bad this can get and i felt i should write something

this post tbh is probably one of the few things i wrote here on this iteration of my blog that actually has a chance of mattering so im gonna make it my pin. like i do wanna emphasize that the risk here IME is both a really severe worsening of intrusive thoughts and, to some extent, genuinely shifting your basic instincts/emotions/epistemic inclinations in ways that are actively worse in whatever direction youd find particularly upsetting such that youd fixate on it in the first place

probably speaks to something unwell in the collective tumblr psyche that those absurdly bleak bad luck brian memes are the only survivors of, like, an entire genre of different advice animal image macros.

imagine someone said something like "we dont talk enough about the danger of inhaling wood smoke" and someone said "actually we talk about it all the time you are just 21". whats going on here? like, sure, the dangers of inhaling wood smoke are a known fact for a long time, there have been various official studies. on the other hand: people sure dont seem to be acting with adequate caution about it. it is often ignored. just because its been talked about before doesnt mean its talked about enough. and why presume the speaker is ignorant of the studies that already exist? for all we know they are very well aware and its informing their perspective. like, this is not some unambiguous knockdown response tbh now imagine people take this exchange as a meme emblematic of like, someone coming into a discussion and not knowing prior conversations. they imagine it necessarily is about the health establishment specifically for some reason, and not what is talked about in some general sense, and they imagine it being covered before is necessarily adequate for whatever the current state is even in health academia. that all seems... kind of silly right?

"In woke 1.0 we never reconciled that..." so to me this seems like she is asking about like, a resolution to this being the social situation somehow. she never claimed it was never talked about extensively - she claims it wasnt "reconciled"! honestly, to me it looks like a plain failure of reading comprehension on the part of the respondent, but I don't claim to model what they believe or mean exactly either

You know how when you're really thirsty you drink some water and then you're like ahhhhhhhh, yeah, that was just what I needed. That sounds vacuous but I mean about how in that moment you're suddenly very aware that all drinks apart from straight-up normal water are mere toys, and water is all you really need to drink, water is the one true object of all the thirsts you've ever thirsted and ever shall thirst. It's just what you need. Well basically I really wish that same thing existed for food, I guess I'm fine with the endless variety of food that exists, it's allowed to exist, but there should be one perfectly basic food substance underlying them all that always feels right to eat when you're hungry, that just gives uncomplicated reliable hunger-satisfaction and is actually the correct answer answer to "what should I eat". I'm pretty sick of the fact that you have to actively vary the food you eat and try to have a healthy balanced diet, I'm even sick of having to figure out what foods I like and preferences and cravings change randomly and stuff like that. I want one food. Water is so good.

Fun fact about shipping container houses is that because so many shipping containers are used to transport hazardous materials and are unsuitable to live in for contamination reasons, it's often easier to make them out of entirely new, unused shipping containers than to source appropriate second hand ones. Which destroys the entire purpose of shipping container houses. Because we already know how to make rooms that are cheaper, better insulated, and more spacious and easy to acquire and transport than brand new shipping containers.
