Y'know, asking for opinions sometimes just makes you more confused!

Violet Ruthvene

Purpure, in fess three argent cups and an argent bat volant

Yeah, I suck at describing the blazon, please to be helping me on that. Oh & I think I read somewhere that 3 items in a row need to be aligned a la "slot machine," so I guess I have to fix that, not sure. And if they say a bat isn't period, I'll cry (they existed before 1600, darnit!). Actually, I do have a bunch of other ideas mocked up, this one's just the coolest & the one I could totally live with & put all over my stuff.

Violet Ruthvene is VERAH gothy. I likes it better than the other two, honestly. So Violet really is a period name? Not that I don't believe you, I'm just surprised because it seems to early-20th century to me.

I think you're safe with the bat, too.

Heh, T. said this could be my 16th-century vampire name ;-)

I found both on this list (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/scots/perth.html), via Academy of St. Gabriel, & I'm double-checking w/the heraldry office to make sure it's an ok list; tho' looking thru the West Heraldry minutes, ppl have used similar lists from the same place & gotten OK'ed.

It should be OK - I used the St. Gabriels lists for my name, and it's passed round 1 with no problem. :)

Me too. I had them document "Sarah" with an "h", because it was much less common pre-17th century than after the Puritans got a hold of the English government. Even with it being a biblical name, it was easier to document variants like "Sara", "Sarai", and "Sarra" than "Sarah". But I have very definitely feelings about how Sarah is spelled, and I didn't want to take any chances. I also had St. Gabs do the docs for my last name too... I wanted it "Wydville", not the more common "Woodville" or "Wydevile". Everything passed on the first try! Thanks, Academy of St. Gabriel!

Actually, since it's your real name, you didn't need to document it at all (though it's super cool that you did). SCA heraldry allows you to take one piece of your birth name(first, middle, or last name) as your registered name.

No matter what, I think Violet Ruthvene has to be the name of your character when we start writing costume erotica. LOL!

BWAAHAHAHAHAAHAH!!! Oh my, yes. So so true :-)

Note to self: why don't I have anything even remotely like an erotica icon???

I'm asking myself the same question... Srsly. We NEED erotica icons.

Also, flipping through Fashion & Fiction, I couldn't help but notice that there was a Margaret Ruthven in the court of Charles II. Not "Ruthvene", but close. ;)

god, now I'm going to have to confuse you. You put your badge all over your stuff - your badge says 'this is my stuff'. You put your device on your banner and your shield - your device says 'Here comes so and so' - it's not supposed to mark your stuff, it's supposed to mark you. I think you can also put it on your heraldic dress, if you want an earlier period heraldic dress.
anyways that's what I've been told.
cool device, though.

The badges I've seen are stripped-down versions of ppl's devices, which makes sense for consistency. Plus, I wouldn't want to go thru the hassle of registering yet another thing -- that's what I meant ;-)

Slot machine actually refers to having multiple different items in a row, e.g. if instead of three cups you wanted a cup, a star, and a feather.

For the critique, I love it, the colors and charges, but for the cups to be in fess (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fess), they'd be perfectly parallel across the middle. I think how you have them, not parallel and near the top would be something like "enarched in chief" but I'm not 100% on that, though you could likely fine a local herald who could help with the description. Simpler to put them in parallel right near the top and call them "in chief" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_(heraldry)).

Oh, yeah, and when describing things of the same color, you'd list the items and then the color would come last. "Perpure, a bat volant and in chief three cups argent"

Ah, wherever I read the 'slot machine' part wasn't very clear to me. Heraldry is so totally not my strong suit! If I *can* have the cups with the center one raised, that's more visually attractive, imo, so I'll see if it's possible & what it's called.

Thanks!

I need a favor, two actually. Can you please make this one post public? The second favor I need is to get another herald I respect to take a look at your stuff, but that's a favor I need from him, which would be facilitated by this post being public. Thanks!

Awesome! I just made this post public, so you are welcome to forward it to a herald. Thank you so much for your help! (And if this person can either comment here or email me at trystkat(at)yahoo(dot)com :-).

[livejournal.com profile] cathyn asked me to consult on this patient... er, submission.

Regarding the name:
That list for "Violet" is fine; in fact, the author has just become Pelican Queen of Arms (the #1 name herald in the SCA).

Where did the last name come from? I'll try & support it for you if I can.

Regarding the device:
Bats are perfectly period and are registered 117 times in SCA heraldry. FYI, this bat is "displayed" (wings spread, showing the belly).

May I suggest that you make the cups smaller and turn them into "secondary" charges? This then makes the bat into the sole primary charge and moves him "up the field" (toward the center of the design) just a bit. This is both better style and makes it easier to avoid certain types of conflicts.

The position of the cups can then be described as "in chief" (at the top) and "in chevron" (arranged in that triangular shape).

If you do so, you have this: Purpure, a bat displayed and in chief three cups in chevron argent.

I've just conflict-checked this and find no conflict or other impediment to registration.

FYI, you could also put the cups in a straight line across the top, as [livejournal.com profile] cathyn mentioned.

Then you'd have: Purpure, a bat displayed and in chief three cups argent.

("In fess" is the default for three charges placed in chief, I believe.)

Thank you for all this info!

I found both Violet & Ruthvene on the same Perth Guild list thru the Academy of St. Gabriel, so I hope that will work.

I'll mock-up both options for the device -- smaller cups or a straight line. Not sure which look will appeal to me better, but it's very helpful to know I have these options. And I'm *so* glad to know the bat is OK :-)

To clarify: whether they remain in their current arrangement or you put them in a straight line, I definitely recommend that the cups be drawn smaller and made "secondary."

Glad to be of assistance.
