Crowe has a need of companionship, of brotherhood. When they separate for a week, Arumat returns to find Crowe strange under his professionalism, mellowing only as they cook their supper and Arumat settles beside him.
It is a need Arumat can understand. Neither of them can return to their own people.
Crowe understands the loss, the failure of command. He shares it now. Crowe has never rescinded his offer to allow Arumat to die. Paradoxically, this is what decides him.
Bacchus swore that Morphus technology could mend the damage of Arumat's augmentations. Arumat watches Crowe's smile, and recharts their course.
