CHINESE REGISTRANTS NEEDED - Save Carolyn Tam

Carolyn Tam is a Torontonian who needs your help. She has Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, just like Emru, and she and her family are hoping a compatible bone marrow donor registers in the unrelated database. Please consider cross-posting to other Toronto groups.

The person who is most likely to match Carolyn is someone with the same or similar ethnic background.

In Canada, if you are one of the white patients and in need of a bone marrow transplant, 75 percent find a suitable donor. For everyone else, that number tumbles to 10-30% percent (I have not been able to find a breakdown by ethnicity for the latter group). This includes people who receive transplants involving an international donor.

There are 650 000 registrants in China and if you think that this is  large number of people, you are WRONG. Because of the complexity of matching, hundreds of thousands of people are needed of this background to find someone who is Carolyn's genetic twin in terms of their bone marrow (someone with the same combination of ten genetic markers that form the human leukocyte antigen - HLA -  complex).

In Canada as of March 31, 2008, there are only 233 Chinese people registered as unrelated potential donors. If there were 10,000 Chinese people registered in Canada it would be a SHORTAGE.

Save Carolyn.

Come for some last minute gifts! Everything will be on sale, and we are going to launch some new 2008 designs.

Incase you dont know who we are, my friend and I run a two-person collaborative business called p0isson. We hand silkscreen shirts that we design, and print 1" buttons all in the DIY fashion. We are completely independant and we need all the support we can get!

Toronto has been amazing to us these last 2 years, so we want to send out a big THANK YOU to everyone who has helped support us! You can check out our website @ www.p0isson.com (We are also having a big sale for those of you who can't make it)

Thank you!!
Love,

Writer seeking recycling interviewees (x-posted)

I'm a writer looking for folks who live with used, recycled, repurposed and vintage stuff. Do you run a vintage clothing business? Did you decorate your home with curbside furniture? Do you swear that all the good musical instruments were built in the '70s? Do you make art out of other people's "garbage?" If this sounds like you, or if you've found other creative uses for what some would call "junk," send me an email and let me know about it! I'm looking for people to write about in Torontoist and possibly other publications. My email address is david_j_widmann(at)yahoo(dot)ca

Thanks. :)
