What shall we do with this place?
I meant to post something here sooner, but teaching duties have kept me busy recently. Anyhow, welcome to members and watchers alike. We've picked up more people than I expected to this quickly. I'd really like to try and see this community take off, so I'll try to post thoughts or questions whenever I can - but I have no plans to overrun the community. If you got something to ask or say, go for it.
The first thing I thought we might discuss is what we'd all like to see happen here. I originally thought it might be interesting to try
tongue_bath out as an online journal with open submissions, however it seemed unlikely that graduate students would want to risk putting their work out in a non-peer reviewed open forum. For general questions about graduate student life or teaching issues, I've found that
academics_anon and
gradstudents serve me well. However, it can be hard to have a more subject-specific conversation there, and that's where I hope
tongue_bath can find a space.
One thing to be aware of is the somewhat infamous Chronicle of Higher Education editorial by Ivan Tribble warning academics against blogging. On the one hand it would be nice if we could start off by introducing ourselves to the community, but on the other hand, I don't want to be traced back to LiveJournal by a job committee. It's something to consider, but I hope it doesn't cause anyone to reconsider joining this community.

So, with this in mind, is there anything you all do or do not want to see happening here?
