There's a argument that get's made around here to the effect of:

A: "You always think you're right!"
B: "Uh, yeah? That's called having an opinion, lol"

And this is kinda funny but also kinda dense. "You always think you're right" is usually just a clumsy way of expressing "You think you're always right" i.e. "You don't consider the possibility of being wrong" i.e. "You lack epistemic humility and are unpleasant to discuss things with as a result".

re: the last reblog, we really need to kill the line of thought that goes "trans women are oppressed, and therefore no trans woman has ever done anything genuinely inconsiderate or hurtful, especially to another transmisogynized person"

like yeah Society sucks but when you talk to another person you are not actually talking to Society writ large. you are talking to another person.

Something I think about a lot is that Gretchen Whitmer ran for governor (and won, easily, twice, in Michigan) with a pledge to "fix the damn roads", right? Popular. Practical. Common sense. Kitchen table.

But what was her initial proposal to do that? Raise the gas tax. You know. Raise money from people using the damn roads. Practical. Common sense. And people lost their goddamn minds over it. Yes, there were other proposals (raising the tax for other people), but they wouldn't raise nearly as much money, likely not enough to fund what was being proposed.

That's the electorate we have to somehow appease. You want the thing, but you don't want to pay for the thing. I don't know how we deal with this long term.

It's a lot less embarrassing if you're capable of saying "Oh, he fucking sucks... those cheekbones though, right?" than if you want us to pretend along with you that someone is morally righteous because of those cheekbones.

fittingoutjane

Or claiming that someone is ugly just because he's a nasty person! Physical appearance is not a measure of either ability or moral fiber, and learning to separate them is a really important life skill, especially if you want to avoid being a fascist.

there is a very specific type of political enlightenment when you allow yourself to acknowledge bad people can be attractive and funny and intelligent and still be bad people because those things don’t quantify morality

joeyclaire

“i’ve never met a pretty racist” “republican makeup” etc etc is all just enforcing the idea that being conventionally unattractive is a moral failing. stop doing that. it’s an actively dangerous idea to spread
