basically I think that if your protagonist doesn’t want to fuck someone so bad it makes them look stupid, then there probably isn’t enough energy in your story. “Fuck someone” isn’t literal btw—they can want to uncover the secrets of their parent’s death, they can want to prove their worth, they can want a donut from one particular bakery—it can be anything so long as they want it so bad that they’ll make decisions that make any sane person go “are you a moron??”, with little to no forethought, or even tons of forethought and this is still the option they chose. Because they want to fuck that thing so bad.

wait isn’t that just giving your characters a motivation???

  1. You’d be surprised at how many people fail to give their characters motivation, and so write a story that’s less good than it could be.
  2. It’s surprisingly easy to come up with an incredibly cool plot and characters without giving the characters enough motivation to make it actually compelling enough to read or even write. If you have a cool af idea that you somehow just can’t bring yourself to write, ask yourself what the main character wants, and how is that driving their decisions?
  3. They need to want it so bad that it makes them look stupid. They need to impulse-buy a half-broken spaceship by mortgaging radioactive land, because they’re just that desperate to prove themselves more than a discarded scrap of a far greater history. They need to want their home and their people safe so much that they’ll risk their own soul to march across hundreds of miles of unknown and terrible danger to throw a cursed ring into a volcano. They need to love someone so much, and need them to know it, that they’ll blurt it out in the middle of a press conference or royal ball, or surrounded by enemies with a garrote at their throat or about to be frozen in carbonite or in the middle of a storm-tossed sea battle between pirates, British Navy, and the undead—or, they need to love someone so much that they’ll swear fealty to an evil emperor and kill a bunch of friends and children for the power to save them. They need to be so balls-to-the-wall insane in at least one regard that the plot isn’t just happening to them, they are in some way causing the plot.
  4. Also keep in mind! When it comes to character development, “WANT” is NOT the same as “NEED”! Sometimes a character knows what’s good for them, what will truly often make them happy, but more often they don’t. They want the acclaim and adoration of the crowds, but really they need the recognition, acceptance or love of one particular person—and maybe that person is their own self. They want to avenge the loss of their loved one, but really they need to accept the loss and move on. A refusal to accept what they need is usually going to get in the way of what they want—and sometimes they figure it out just in time to go forward and climactically achieve their goal, or maybe they double down on their character flaws in a classic display of Greek tragedy!
"Fuck someone” isn’t literal btw

As an Aro-Ace who was very uncomfortable with your post until this point: THANK YOU!

Also, one caveat: there is one rare type of story where the protagonist cannot become stupid over what they're after. This is the detective story where their character is in many ways a placeholder for the audience to try to solve the puzzle (as opposed to more thrilery types of detective story) and the detective's internal motivations are basically irrelevant because they are in many ways a framing device.

Ironically, ACD Sherlock Holmes, who most people would immediatley think of for this sort of always detached detective, does not always fit this caveat protag type. He can and has done stupid.

This is because a lot of detective stories have the detective as a sort of framing device, examining the motives of everyone else in the story. The absence of the main character's fuck-stupid-drive is more than compensated for in terms of everyone else having an outsized one.

Same rule also applies to things like video game stories where the protagonist is more of a proxy character & lens for the player to examine the world, while the rest of the cast has motivation to spare. Basically, you can have a protagonist who is relatively normal about things if you make up for it by having everyone else pick up the slack (and then some).

Also you don't need to start out with your protagonist's motivation being at 11, you can start a bit sooner and then use whatever event dials it up and breaks off the knob as your opening climax. For instance, at the start of Star Wars, Luke's motivation to go travel and rescue Leia is pretty strong but it's not strong enough to override his loyalty to his aunt and uncle. It's only when they are dramatically killed that his drive becomes powerful enough for him to follow some old guy he barely knows to booking a shady smuggler's ship off-planet and go try and punch an interstellar empire in the nuts.

"sex should be less stigmatized and talked about more" and "you should always make sure people who dont want to consume sexual media that you present dont have to see it" are two statements that can and should coexist. by the way.

For all that the 1800s etiquette guides are--obviously--derangedly sexist from a modern perspective? They're also mindblowing in how casually they will assert things that MODERN DAY CONSERVATIVES would scream and cry and shit their pants about.

"People back then always married young it's natural!!!" Every single 1800s guide I've ever met casually mentions that, of course, you really shouldn't get married before you're at least 20, and waiting until 25 is usually better.

Or, like. Okay here's a long segment:

Just firmly going "it is crazy sexist to blame The Wife for overspending when thirty seconds of asking questions will immediately establish that her husband was outright lying to her about how much money they had. Talk to your wife like a normal person."

Or--okay, here. A section on being honest and not writing love letters in secret, because that's usually a good sign that there's something untoward going on....

....except that he then immediately acknowledges that sometimes, the reason you're hiding this from your parents is that your parents suck. That there are parents who frankly have not earned the right to approve or disapprove of your partner.

(I realize the phrasing there sounds a lot less strong than my summary, but--trust me on this. When you're familiar with the narrative voice of these kinds of books, this passage is downright radical. The mere acknowledgement that if you treat your kids badly, it's your own damn fault when they don't talk to you? I've genuinely never seen that before in this genre. Don't freak out over "properly trained", either. It's just a linguistic shift--at the time, "training" was used the way we would say "raising" a child today. )

OP turned reblogs off but as someone with a crazy wicked scar that's been called "body horror" a few times, I really wanted this on my blog

in fact I think all of these are beautiful, cool, neat, or just neutral. nothing negative about any of it. also goes for implants, I've known people with implants of all kinds be made fun of, but that shit isn't ugly or gross either, it's just neutral and or positive

3 Tips for Making Homes More Pokemon Accessible

Quadrupedal and bird pokemon cannot easily open doors and drawers. Tie rope to handles so they can pull them open instead.

Smaller pokemon cannot reach the tops of counters and tables. Having step-ladders and stools on hand allow them to reach better.

Medium and small pokemon cannot reach most human shelving and other surfaces. Having their own furniture allows them to store their own things.

mega xerneas & yveltal

further context: the main idea i had was them gaining eachother's "element" when they reach their limit.

xerneas (Y) faces death, autumn

yveltal (X) comes to life, spring

xerneas and yveltal have rarely seen alternate forms in which xerneas is a tree, and yveltal is a flower bud. (or at least resembling that.) i wanted to further expand on that visual.

+ shinies

The Demon Who Saved a God: An In-Depth Analysis of Chara's Salvation

Artwork commission done by @bewalkedi which was paid for by me!

Gather here, young UTDR fans. And let this old, grumpy veteran of the 2010-era Undertale fandom tell you about the day the Chara Wars were won.

On a quiet Sunday evening on September 21st, 2025, the Undertale fandom was struck by what can only be described as the Tsar Bomb of truth nukes. In a single instant, a decade’s worth of bad takes and bogus fanon was completely and thoroughly annihilated.

The warhead that caused such great and terrible devastation was made of a simple 9-word-long sentence:

To those of you who are new to this fandom, it seems like nothing more than a neat lore drop. But for those of us who’ve been fans since the mid to late 2010s... we all felt like the Rebel starfighter pilots watching the 2nd Death Star blow up. We all knew what it meant: our favourite rose-cheeked, cocoa-loving freak was finally free from the clutches of media illiteracy!

With this statement, Toby Fox demonstrated that they were no less deserving of salvation than every other character in Undertale. That they were anything but an irredeemable megalomaniac that saw everyone as instruments to be used and wanted nothing more than to spread misery, havoc, and destruction wherever they went.

The war was finally over! They beat the allegations! And Toby Fox ensured that anyone who dared to utter the phrase "Chara is evil!" would be ridiculed, roasted, and ratioed to high heaven.

And yet... something about this whole thing kinda bothered me.

While I was certainly euphoric to see Toby Fox confirm Chara’s salvation, I couldn't help but wonder how exactly it all happened. But sadly, it seemed like nobody knew how it went down either. No matter where I looked on Tumblr, Twitter, Reddit, or any other corner of the fandom, no one had a definitive answer as to how Chara was saved.

It seemed that, in true Chara lore fashion, this was something that Toby Fox would forever leave shrouded in ambiguity and uncertainty. Maybe the truth is that this was just cheap fan service or some half-baked retcon, made without any care for how it would affect the story of Undertale...

...OR IS IT!?!?

After a good few months of research and analysis, I've come to the conclusion that Chara's salvation in the Pacifist Run was not as brilliant or well-thought-out as you think it is.

IT'S EVEN BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You thought Chara's character was fantastic before? Oh, my fellow hellsite user, you are in for a heck of a treat! You DO NOT have the FAINTEST IDEA just how much the phrase "Now there is one person left to save... Chara" does, for not just their character, but for the narrative and themes of Undertale as a whole!!!

So it's with great pride and greater pleasure that I present to you in deeeeeeeeliciously autistic detail (and yes I am autistic thanks for asking!) the ABSOLUTELY FANTABULOUS REDEMPTION ARC OF ONE CHARA DREEMURR!

Chapter 1: "At first, I was confused."

Now, before we can get into how Chara changed for the better, I think it's important that I demonstrate to y'all that they were capable of change in the first place.
