After a crushing DNF at mile 80 last year, the Hoka shoe engineer from France put on a masterclass in threading the kneedle of patience and courage, taking the lead in the final 15 miles to stop the clock in 13:46:14 and break friend and teammate Jim Walmsley’s previous course record by 23 min and 12 seconds.
With his victory, Bouillard becomes the seventh person (fourth man) to win both UTMB and Western States.
