Challenge 307:
A GOOD DAY
Some days, things just go right.

The sun is shining, and the temperature’s nice, maybe with a light breeze. If you have to travel, the trip is easy – all green lights if you’re driving, a pleasant walk or ride if you’re not. Everyone you have to talk to is cooperative; even if the day started out rough, it’s getting better by the minute. This time, everything’s going to be okay.

How do your characters feel about having a good day? Are they suspicious, thinking it might be too good to be true? Do they just enjoy it? How often do they have good days?

Write a story about a good day.

BONUS GOAL: Everything’s Coming Up Roses

If your submission features roses, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, July 20 at 9:00PM EST.
• Post submissions as new entries using the template in the profile
• Tag this week's entries as: [#] submission, 307 – a good day
• If you have questions about this challenge, please ask them here

Hello on Wednesday!  How are things going in the world of fic?

Did you write?

   - Yes!
   - No!
   - Not yet!

If yes, what kind of writerly activity did you engage in?  How do you feel about it?
If no, what were the obstacles/situations that affected your writerly pursuits?  What will you do differently tomorrow to get more writing done?
If not yet, because the day hasn't gotten going yet, what kind of writing activity are you planning (or hoping) to accomplish?

Summary: Mo Xuanyu lives alone at the edge of the habitable world, continuing Wei Wuxian's work and strengthening his cultivation. One day soon, he hopes to surpass the Yiling Laozu's power and follow him into the unknown. Complications arise.

Creator Notes: (Cut for length.) Continue. )

Reccer's Notes: LesbianlazerOwl’s AU where the Jiang and Jin Sects are deep-sea merfolk is a strange and rapturous gem that turns Lovecraftiana upside-down (from the POV of a character embodying everything Lovecraft abhorred: a queer Asian—here turned sea creature—looking to monsterfuck.)

With all the haughty smarter-than-the-sheeple dudgeon of the alienated Emo Kid, Abyssal Merman! and Seeker of Arcane Knowledge Mo Xuanyu follows his idol the Yiling Laozu’s forbidden explorations of the mysterious and unfathomable surface—where, according to rumor, he found love with an eldritch air fairy! (Should the author ever see fit, I’d love to read a Wangxian prequel.)

LesbianlazerOwl compresses an incredible amount of atmosphere and implicit worldbuilding into just short of 5000 words, in ways that encourage still further speculation (the Sunshot Campaign is referenced; what could justify such a name in this world, and what were the Wen—creatures of the infernal blazing heights of the Epipelagic Zone?)

Hello on Tuesday! What kind of a writing day has it been so far today -- or if today hasn't gotten going yet, how did you fare yesterday?

       - I thought about my fic once or twice
       - I wrote
       - I did some planning and/or outlining
       - I did research and/or canon review
       - I edited
       - I've sent my fic off to my beta
       - I posted today!
       - I'm taking a break
       - I did something else that I'll talk about in a comment

Tuesday Discussion:  It is really hot where I am, so hot it is hard to get any work done, even something "quiet" like writing. Does extreme weather affect your writing at all?

Here are the entries for this challenge:

List of entries )

Please Note: Because we only have 3 entries this week, there is only a First Place and Runner Up to vote for!

In order to vote, please reply to this post using the form provided. All comments are screened, and entries are listed in the order they were submitted. For your vote to qualify, you must fill out your entire voting card (both spots) in order to be counted. Winner votes are worth 2 points, Runner Up votes are worth 1 point. Meeting the bonus goal on an entry gets an extra point for that submission.

When voting, please copy/paste the ENTRY NUMBER and the FIC TITLE from the list above into the spot you're voting for (this prevents accidentally mis-numbering a vote and casting it for the wrong entry). It should look like this:

First Place: 61. Fic Title Here
Runner Up: 88. Another Fic Title

Please note that you cannot vote for your own entry, and that votes cannot be made anonymously. You do not have to be a member of the community in order to vote, nor have submitted an entry for this week; everyone is welcome to participate in the voting. IP addresses are logged to prevent duplicate voting.

Voting closes Wednesday, July 15 at 9:00PM EST.

Go go go, you've got this!

    - None

Mostly I want to save a link to this particular podcast episode because I'm fairly sure I will want to listen again: No Mess, No Magic: Building an AuDHD Friendly Practice with Dr. Bailey Lang.

I think it's excellent advice for anyone with fluctuating levels of energy whether that's due to AuDHD, chronic illness, or a rocky life period. It's meant especially for people who have been burnt by common writing advice. (There are a few choice words about PhD programs in there too!).

I liked the bits about mindset, and reframing discipline as "devotion." There's lot of tidbits that come up, one that resonated with me in particular around keeping your scheduling flexible rather than assuming this is now your process FOR EVER!!! (I am not good at this!). In general, this is all about how to build a writing practice that works FOR YOU PERSONALLY. Hence why I'll likely want or need to give it another listen.

I wasn't actually familiar with this podcast before. If anyone is and has recs for other episodes, let me know! I'm gonna be poking around the backlist.

And while I'm here reccing writing-related podcasts, I recently listened to this episode of The Better Writer podcast: ep 29 - 8 Lessons I’ve Learned Since Becoming an Editor & Book Coach (link has a transcript) and really liked the reminders, especially around how most writers need to add much more conflict and meaningful stakes to their stories. This is something I'm particularly focused on adding or making clearer in my ST revisions (and that I'm so, so hoping will help with pacing 🤞), and that might still be a problem with the beginning of CW... Anyway, I like this podcast for editing mindset and editing tips in general.

Any writing podcasts (and/or specific episodes in particular!) anyone here enjoys and would rec? Beside Writing Excuses, I suppose. It comes up all the time, but I've got to say I've been listening less and less since they added so many ads. Or maybe past seasons resonated better with me and it'll return to the regular rotation soon!
