The Hut Institute
An intensive laboratory-workshop for emerging artists working on borders
June 25—July 1;  10AM-6PM
Arts@Renaissance
2 Kingsland Avenue (corner of Maspeth)
L to Graham Avenue

Hut #7 at Arts@Renaissance, in the basement of a restored Greenpoint Hospital building

“The Hut Institute” is an exploratory and learning space for emerging artists whose work explores boundaries— boundaries between artistic forms and boundaries between the “art world” and the “real world”. Are there even such boundaries? What is it to make live art in this historical moment? How can we be responsive to the impulses to hybridize, to be inclusive, to reach out, to leave the gallery or theater, while also being respectful of forms, people, and places? The institute will take place at Hut #7, a hut built out of found and re-purposed materials on the site of a restored Greenpoint Hospital building. The hut will directly and indirectly influence our inquiry.

Participants will engage in a series of workshops each day including daily morning movement, and additional sessions with musicians, visual artists, and community organizers. Participants will be invited to work on an independent solo or group project in the neighborhood, exploring what “community interaction” can mean. Projects will be shared with the public (optional) at the Open Hut Day on July 1st. Faculty will include:

Jill Sigman, choreographer

Janine Antoni, visual artist

Kristin Norderval, composer/vocalist; certified Deep Listening instructor

Chloe Bass, artist, activist, co-founder of Arts In Bushwick

Gustavo Aguilar (composer/percussionist) & Gaelyn Aguilar (anthropologist), TUG Collective

Courtney Renken, community organizer

Laura Hofmann, activist and member of OUTRAGE (Organizations United for Trash Reduction & Garbage Equity)

Eric Bruzaitis, activist and member of OUTRAGE

Participants need not have longstanding training in a discipline, but should be open-minded, thoughtful, eager to move, and curious and respectful about how to temporarily enter a North Brooklyn community.

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

This workshop is subsidized by jill sigman/thinkdance and Arts@Renaissance.

$250 for 6 days (10am-6pm).

July 1 Open Hut Day free.

Hut #7 EVENT LISTING

Hut #7 was built by choreographer and multi-media artist Jill Sigman; it is made of trash found on and around the site of Arts@Renaissance at the Greenpoint Renaissance Center in Williamsburg-Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The hut is simultaneously a sculpture, a dwelling, and a stage, allowing various activities to happen in and around it. It is part of “The Hut Project”, a series of site-specific huts made of found and re-purposed materials, raising issues around waste, sustainability, housing, and home. Hut #7 is accompanied by an exhibition, “jill, why do you build huts?”, created by BRUNO and providing context for the project.

Hut #5

Hut #5 is coming! I started building this weekend…

Hut #5 is part of my ongoing The Hut Project, a series of site-specific huts made from found and re-purposed materials. Each hut is at the same time a structure, a sculpture, and an emergency preparedness kit in which themes of sustainability, shelter, real estate, and apocalypse intersect. Hut #5 will be made of trash and will incorporate a living permaculture plant system designed by Jesse Sachs.

Hut #5 will be the site of a mini-festival of activities. Here’s what’s coming up:

Hut Art: I set off to seek my fortune and I got a little lost and then I remembered what you said
A live performance installation made for Hut #5, “I set off…” is a slow motion landscape of movement rituals, definitions, and actual edibles. Performance by Jill Sigman; original musical score by Kristin Norderval. The piece runs for 3 hour blocks; viewers enter and exit freely.
Friday and Saturday, December 3 & 4

1 Grattan Street (corner of Bogart), 2nd floor, Studio #221
Bushwick, Brooklyn

Directions by subway:
Take the L train to the Morgan Avenue stop (6th stop in Brooklyn). If you are coming from Manhattan stay in the rear of the train. When you exit at Morgan Avenue, take the stairs labelled “Bogart Street & Harrison Place” (near the back end of the train). When you exit the subway onto Bogart Street, you will see a large yellow brick building in front of you; this is the building the studio is in. Walk to your right on Bogart half a block toward Brooklyn Natural health food store, and make a left onto Grattan. The entrance (1 Grattan Street) is the first door in from the corner.
