Taiwan's Mavis Fan Follows Her Own Yellow Brick Road

While my recent trip to Taiwan could only be described as a crash-course in the country's music sector, I had had the pleasure to see Fan Xiaoxuan, aka Mavis Fan, perform a year earlier at MIDEM with her band 100%. I immediately became a fan of the "Little Witch of Music" for her ability to straddle pop and rock influences and spot-on vocals into a seamless high-energy sounds.
Mavis has come a long way though and climbed many hurdles to arrive where she is today. Thrust into fame in the mid-90s as a "sweet girl" pop star for the children's market, her records sold over a million copies each, maker her an idol for an entire generation of children. But as happens with so many young pop star, she faced a crisis of following her typecast role or venturing off to follow her own voice. Luckily for us, this Dorothyesque singer chose to chart her own unique (and some times muddy) path down the yellow brick road as you'll see from this video.

Summers - "Too Late"

The video “Too Late” is the first single release by the rock band Summers, and is truly a rock lover’s paradise. The music and style of Summers is reminiscent of Def Leppard in the 1980s. With a overall great song from the band, lead vocals, a rocking good guitar solo, heartfelt lyrics, and a catchy chorus, the video and song are well done and impressive. With lyrics like “I pushed the good girls out/And let the bad girls in/Then you came along/And changed something/Girl, there are no doubts/That you are my everything/But you didn’t know/Cause I didn’t show/,” and a chorus that backs that up with “Hey, give me a chance to change my ways/Please stay/Oh baby don’t go away/It’s not too late for me to love you/It’s not too late for you to change your mind/I can’t make it through without you/It’s not too late…,” the song is lyrically strong with a great traditional pure rock sound. The video showcases the various band members performing the song in addition to the story of one man’s struggle to get the woman he loves to give him a second chance. It’s not too early to get your rock on with “Too Late,” and you’ll be glad you did.

Redline Addiction - "Sadie (with The District Revival)"

"Sadie (with The District Revival)" is the first single to be released from "Letters." The track has a nice intro with acoustic guitars and cello, and is an emotion evoking piece expressing true love for the lovely Sadie to whom life and love have not been kind. The singer soothes her with sweet promises and strong lyrics, beautifully matched by a mix of electric and acoustic guitars, the cello, and a harmony sung just right."

ca458 - Mua - Mua (EP)

Artist: Mua
Title: Mua (EP)
#ca458
Date: 2011-07-19
Keywords: post-punk; lo-fi; experimental; rock
(320 kbps)

If a personality was a house, these songs would be found in its dark corners.
All houses are alike. The same rooms. Necessary things carry out its usual functions. The interior is never good enough... So unevident and hidden (perhaps even from the eyes of the owner) is much more interesting. Though there is little fun in concealed and intentionally forgotten stuff. Minor mental pathologies. Some rusted mechanisms of emotions forming. A thick dust layer of loneliness. In fine, things that make you fell like a hero of Ellise`s "Glamorama" asking: “Who the hell is Mua?" And get no clear answer.

BLACK DAWN, Long Island's Hardest Alternative or Metal Rock Band?

BLACK DAWN is a group of four musicians, a faithful road manager, an ever-growing legion of fans (ranging from rowdy adolescents to toothless old men and women), a respect and appreciation for the sound of silence, and a suitcase full of aggressive and passionate hard-edged music.
The original incarnation of BLACK DAWN was created in 1992 when Tom Kelly hooked up with a local Long Island bass player, and once formed the band decided to name themselves as appropriately as they could, utilizing a name that deep down described their heavy, morbid, and intense music quintessentially. "We needed a name that is not happy, because the songs are not happy. This was the most unhappy name we could think of. For us, it implies an absence of hope. I suppose that, in a way, it recognizes those who are in a bad situation and know that they are not going to get out of it."
Originally intending to have the band be a hobby, over the years it has evolved into a very serious affair. "At first, it was probably just to be able to use and improve whatever musical ability we have. The shows would be a chance for us to party with our friends. We've kept the band going all this time because it is our art. It is what we would rather be doing instead of our jobs."
