FRIENDS ONLY

However, if you've followed a link to an entry on this journal and would like it unlocked please just let me know. There may be stuff that was originally, and always intended to be, public that I have forgotten to unlock.

My friending policy is, at best, eccentric. However, if you don't drop me a note here (or do the equivalent somewhere else) then there's no chance of reciprocation.

yuletide

My gift this year was, of all things, a semi-steampunk, multimedia, academic retelling of The Goose Girl: March, Enholt, and Margrave: The Ten Year's War. Very clever, careful, and precise. It's sort of Ruritanian, also, and that is one of my secret weaknesses (I love romances, I don't know whyyy). It's sort of tragic, but also pretty funny, and has a lovely little happy coda. Not at all the kind of story I expected, but in a good way. Nice job, Yuletide.

And my own story was effusively received by the recipient, so I can breathe out now!

Happy Christmas, if that's a relevant wish. Happy Sunday, if it isn't.

Merry Christmas.

So, here is the thing! I got two gorgeous Yuletide stories this year and they've both kind of short-circuited my brain.

They Make a Desolation and Call It Peace, a post-Partition, pre-novel Firoz who is lonely and frustrated. DEAR FIROZ, HERE ARE A MILLION HUGS. But at the end there is an unexpected grace note of humor, and most importantly there are no fruit knives.

Time and Tide is a beautiful, dreamy look at Tide (Andy Lau's character) from Days of Being Wild. The writer did a cool thing in tying it into other WKW works, which are all kind of tied together anyway! So it is like an extra WKW movie - which was pretty thrilling for me. DoBW is not very long and is available on Netflix Instant Watch so if you wanted you could probably, like, catch up and then read the story.

Also, my parents gave me cognac for Christmas. Parents win!

Happy Christmas, everybody!

I have Thoughts on TVD.

I should probably have written them up . . . last week. When the show came on. But I was busy, so I didn't. Now I am rectifying that.

You may think that The Vampire Diaries does not deserve that much internet text about it. But you are wrong, because it's a consistently good show, both funnier and more touching than it seems on the surface, and it's always a fun ride. Except for the first few episodes.

ja: to hide your love away

(I know like three things about the Raj, and maybe one of them was useful for creating this show.)

1. Comment to this post and I'll assign you the basis of some TV show idea. (Science fiction show, medical drama, criminal procedure, etc...)
2. Create a cast of characters, including the actors who'd play them
3. Add in any actor photos, character bios and show synopsis that you want.
4. Post to your own journal.
