The Genius Party

So, I guess this was a failed experiment. I'm sad to see it go, but it just didn't work out the way I had hoped. My apologies to you three who participated. I am leaving the journal active, so you can go back and read your posts if you want, but you can not post any new entries, and all the members who did not post have been removed and can no longer read members only entries. When I get back to New York, maybe we can form a real writing group, or just swap stories every now and then. And I'll eventually post a critique of your last story, gdawz. Or maybe I'll just e-mail it to you. Sorry it's taken so long. I just lost my enthusiasm for all this when it became clear that most of the people who said they were excited about it turned out to be too busy.

Anyway, I have to get back to work. I didn't sleep last night. It was fun, folks.

I recently joined this website/list serv called "The Desk Drawer." It was advertised in my favorite e-mail list, Wordsmith's A.Word.A.Day, as a writing community to help writers perfect their craft. After having the URL of The Desk Drawer in my inbox for a few months, I finally decided to sign up last week, much to the chagrin of my girlfriend, who was afraid my writing would be stolen. An e-mail from the list administrator allayed my fears of usurpation, but I soon discovered a much more troubling problem with The Desk Drawer: none of the members can write worth a damn. As such, I doubt whether their opinions of my writing would be of much interest. My hope is that this community will succeed where The Desk Drawer failed. To join "The Genius Party" (which, by the way, is also a much better name than "The Desk Drawer"), you must have proved to me (or a trusted member of the community), that you can not only use the English language properly but can also use it effectively.

To join this community, please send a writing sample based on the prompt below to geniusparty[at]gmail{dot}com, with the subject "The Genius Party Membership Request." Please include your live journal name in the e-mail so I can send you an invitation if I decide to accept you into the group.

Prompt:
Write about the most important person in the world. Yeah, there are lots of important people in the world, but only one is the most important. Write about that person, in whatever way you wish. You can write about someone important to you, or about someone important to the world as a whole (W, Bono, etc.), or anything else that comes to mind when you think about the most important person in the world. Write a maximum of 350 words on this topic and send it to me. I'll reply within a day or two to tell you whether you have been accepted into the community.
