Stratt, standing in front of a room of Important People TM: What we are about to watch for the first time is recordings from the Project Hail Mary. These videos may very well save humanity. Press play.

Grace, on recording: I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE WHAT I’M DOING.

Voice from back of room: welp, we’re fucked, it was nice having life on Eath while it lasted.

Stratt: Please remain silent. I assure you he has this under control. He’s got this.

Grace, on recording: THE WAY IN WHICH I DON’T GOT THIS.

Grace, on recording: SO THERES THESE TWO DEAD BODIES IN HERE—

Stratt, who amnesticized him: Fuck.

I think people forget that Stratt amnesticized Grace with the goal that Ilyukina and Yao would be there to help him, y’know NOT DIE, and then THEY DIED before he woke up.

So like she gets the recordings and realizes Yao and Ilyukina are dead before he wakes up so he’s got no pilot, no engineer, and no memories.

And then you also have to remember that the EXISTENCE of these recordings and the fact they were accompanied by the Taumoeba means that an amnesticized Grace somehow managed to save earth without a pilot or engineer and shoddy memory that only vaguely gives him enough to work with as he works.

Like what the fuck man.

Grace sends this off as a "fuck you" to Stratt and unintentionally eases 40+ years of horrific guilt.

(40+ factoring in the Hail Mary mission, then the time it would take to get back to Erid and the time it would take for the message to get to Earth. Probably closer to 50+ actually).

(I do think Stratt felt bad. She did a lot of terrible things to save the planet, and obviously felt guilt for sending Grace off. I imagine the time waiting to hear back from the Hail Mary was torture for everyone, but she essentially sent three people off to their deaths, one unwillingly. Hearing that Grace made it out alive would be a huge weight off her shoulders.)

the project hail mary universe is one of the only ones out there where orpheus turning around actually saved eurydice btw

Some people on this website learnt the word “trope” and let it settle comfortably into the vocabulary space that should have been occupied by the word “cliché”.

“Trope” is a neutral word. If a particular trope is overused ad nauseam, it becomes a cliché. Saying you hate tropes does not make any sense.

“I hate recurring themes and motifs”

Well, good luck finding fictional content you can safely consume

"It's just so trope-y"

well I should hope so

“When my husband died, because he was so famous and known for not being a believer, many people would come up to me – it still sometimes happens – and ask me if Carl changed at the end and converted to a belief in an afterlife. They also frequently ask me if I think I will see him again. Carl faced his death with unflagging courage and never sought refuge in illusions. The tragedy was that we knew we would never see each other again. I don’t ever expect to be reunited with Carl. But the great thing is that when we were together, for nearly twenty years, we lived with a vivid appreciation of how brief and precious life is. We never trivialized the meaning of death by pretending it was anything other than a final parting. Every single moment that we were alive and we were together was miraculous – not miraculous in the sense of inexplicable or supernatural. We knew we were beneficiaries of chance… That pure chance could be so generous and so kind… That we could find each other, as Carl wrote so beautifully in Cosmos, you know, in the vastness of space and the immensity of time… That we could be together for twenty years. That is something which sustains me and it’s much more meaningful… The way he treated me and the way I treated him, the way we took care of each other and our family, while he lived.
That is so much more important than the idea I will see him someday.
I don’t think I’ll ever see Carl again. But I saw him. We saw each other. We found each other in the cosmos, and that was wonderful.”

“i should take a walk for my mental health” boring, tired, i don’t even really wanna do it tbh

“i need to check the perimeter” i need to check the perimeter

if you want to experience life more deeply you have to find more beauty. stop training yourself to dismiss, to mock, to assume the worst all the time — when you do this you build walls between yourself and the world. and after a while you stop feeling the warmth of it entirely.

beauty requires openness. it asks you to let things reach you, to soften enough to be moved. it’s not naive to see beauty everywhere—it’s a skill, a form of intelligence, a kind of quiet bravery. because it is so much easier to critique than to create, to detach than to engage, to dismiss than to love.

let yourself be affected. let yourself find things beautiful and let that be enough. life is not asking you to be cool, sitting on the sidelines and nitpicking everything. it’s asking you to see life and experience it fully.

k but imagine Rocky wanting to learn about how humans became the apex predators of their planet so he has Grace “hunt” him in the biodome as an experiment and during it he thinks Grace isn’t trying or taking it seriously which is bad bad bad because this is for research purposes

only for Rocky to get more and more tired as the experiment goes on just to realize that Grace isn’t which makes him panic so he puts as much distance as he can between them and finds a (hopefully) safe spot to sleep and when he wakes up the human is crouching over him like “got youuu” and Rocky has never shrieked so damn loud before in his life

fun fact: the way persistence predation typically ends is inducing hyperthermia in the prey. so its body begins to shut down and it physically cannot run away any more, but it doesn’t necessarily lose consciousness

and, i’m no biomechanics expert, but eridian locomotion seems incredibly thermally intensive. i expect prolonged physical effort would heat up rocky’s ACS until either it can’t create enough of a temperature differential to move his legs, or it starts to cook his worker cells. and this kills the eridian so there might be a biological mechanism to stop it, or maybe their body just tells their brain that they absolutely have to stop moving now.

so i don’t think rocky would fall asleep. i think either he would become physically unable to make his legs move, or his body would tell him “hey man, you need to stop moving or you will literally die”. either way, he’d probably be able to see (hear) grace approaching, and know that there’s no way for him to escape

opened my wip and didnt immediately write a thousand new beautiful and perfect words so i'm going to smash my laptop with a hammer

"But Tiz, Jason isn't wearing his helmet in the new com-" SSSHHHHhhhhh shut up I dont care he should wear it 🫵

my new unhinged biology fan theory comes from pondering made up sff fantasy swears in fic, bc fic doesn’t have to replace swears to get shown on tv or marketed to teenagers, and there is most definitely things like ‘shit’ and ‘fuck’ in every universe. but then i thought. no. let’s play this straight

there is no fucking in star wars

quigon: hey who was anakin’s father [partner you spent romantic time with in order to sop up exogenous DNA to produce genetically variable offspring]

shmi: oh I didn’t have one i just got pregnant one day

quigon: i see, accidental environmental acquisition. rare but not rare enough to be worth bringing up ever again
