Everyday is Halloween

I had a last minute Halloween idea, like I thought about it on monday, went to Home Depot/Target on Thursday, and assembled it on Friday before Nocturna. I won 1st place again. :) $200 bucks. It consisted of

1 x 32gal Garbage can
1 x small bathroom garbage can
1 x 8' x 8" dia Aluminum duct work
1 x 6' x 5" dia Clothes dryer flexible exhaust duct
2 x 10" dia tupperware
1 baster with bulb
1 ping pong ball
2 x stadard tennis balls wrapped in duct tape and painted white.
1 random piece of cardboard for Eye goggle
2 cans of Metallic Blue Spray paint
1 roll of duct tape
2 stick of glue for glue gun.

For some reason I am motivated to make Halloween costumes and can put 'em together fairly quickly from nothing. Some of them are fairly complex. Why can't I do this with other projects like my electric bike project, my microwave heated piston coffee maker project, my couch sized Bicycle flat bed trailer project?

It really comes down to motivation. I have the mechanical skills, but it's just a matter of wanting to spend 8 hours working on something when I always feel I don't have any time.

So I am going to try an experiment where I have to complete a project every 2 weeks until the end of the year, starting Monday. My libertarian tax account redid all my messed up taxes and got me back a crapload of money, so I can buy the tools I need. I'm going to start an instragram account just so I can post photos of my stuff.

My 1st project, in honor to Halloween, is to convert my Bender Costume into a grocery cart. :)

We'll see how I do...

Convergence 20 - VIVA CONVERGENCE!

I don't even know where to begin with this. C20 was an overwhelming success, far better than we had ever imagined. We had modest expectations, but we never could've predicted the outcome. We wanted to revitalize Convergence, and invested heavily into making it an event people wanted to come to, because we all believed it still has relevance even 20 years later. So many of us still chat with people we've not met on FB, twitter,etc... and still would like to meet them.

So many of my old friends, I haven't seen for 10 years or more showed up. So many of the younger gothlings, made new friends. It's very satisfying to see that fire in their eyes, that overwhelming bliss of being around people who understand you.

The bands were not just chosen for their appeal, and talent, but for the personalities of the members, who would blend well with our Core Group. All of the bands, except March Violets (who loved the crowd and some of the members are on the alt.gothic fb group now), have either been part of Convergence at some point (Like Sunshine Blind), attended convergence at some point (all the Chicago bands) or attended similar social gatherings like the WGT "When We Were Young" After Parties or Whitby. While March Violet were awesome and had the biggest Draw, Pretentious Moi?, IMO, Gets "Best of Show" The crowd Loved them, despite being completely unknown on this side of the pond. But Tim is a very likable fellow, and was at C10 when he Played with Manuskript.

The djs and fashion designers also were chosen for not just their talent, but for their history with the Event. This has always been the "Chicago Model" the little convergence in the Big Event, even the 1st one (Unknowingly) followed this model. We seed the talent pool with our friends, because we know a lot of them make their living in goth (& related interests) as musicians, artists, designers, independent business owners, authors, etc..

If they can justify coming as a business expense, they will most likely come. Fross dj'd because we gave him a dj gig, as did Sailor Gloom, and Arcanus. Zoh Security and Houston Batty Came, because they were in the Fashion show and they brought their friends, models, clients, and fans.

The Real Testimony of C20's success is in the Creation of the Alt.gothic FB group. For the 1st time since 2002, we are all under one roof again. I hate facebook, but we are all connected, 710 members in 3 days, and it's a buzz with all the fluff, intellect, sincerity of the days of old. The interface does not matter as long as we have connectivity, and now we have it.

C21 will be pivotal to the future of Convergence and I am hoping that some of the Bids include people who won't destroy all the enthusiasm we've generated. I'm really trying to find someone from Philadelphia to put in a bid, because of all the cities in the US, Philly would be best for this very important Convergence, due to it's location and relatively lower cost of living.

Viva Convergence!

Final C20 Line Up

Pretty Pleased. :)

Hope you're all having Happy Hols (no matter what you celebrate or don't!) ***And now, on the behalf of the entire C20 Chicago committee, I am extremely happy to announce the final band to be added to the already fine Convergence 20 line up: legendary UK group, The March Violets!!! ***

In alphabetical order, the bands for C20 will be:
Arch Visceral Parlor (Chicago)
EVC - Ending The Vicious Cycle (Dallas/Ft. Worth)
The Gothsicles (Chicago)
I:Scintilla (Chicago)
The March Violets (Leeds, UK)
Peeling Grey (Los Angeles)
Pretentious, Moi? (London, UK)
Sunshine Blind (San Francisco)

Detailed bios & schedules for all the bands will be up soon!!!

There were nearly 50 bands who submitted to play at Convergence 20 Chicago and only 8 slots to fill! This wasn’t an easy task and it took months to decide. If possible, we easily could have turned C20 from a 3-night event into a week-long array of bands, bands, bands! We believe we've made a great selection from those who submitted who will represent the spirit of Convergence & the subculture surrounding it, put on a fantastic live performance, and be entertaining even for those who may be as-of-yet unfamiliar with their music.

Many thanks to *all* of the bands who submitted! As stated above, there were *many* who would have also been great choices, and we wish you all the very best!!!

(no subject)

I really haven't taken a proper trip since June. I don't count my trips to DC, b/c it was spent with Anne, which didn't involve much exploration. I spent most of my time wandering around the city. I met up with Michael & Elaine Barrick for a couple of pints Friday. I haven't seen them since C10, (8 years ago), but with most of my internet friends, the conversations flow so easily, so natural.

We, "Gen-X"ers are so fortunate to have grown up during the infancy and evolution of the digital age, moreso than any generation that came before or after, because we both understand the technology, yet remember the world before it. We embraced the digital age, made it part of our world, without it replacing our world.

Saturday, I had an absolutely gorgeous meal at The Foundation. I ordered the "OPPP" a vegan pasta, pesto, with peanut sauce dish, topped with fresh spinach, and steamed broccoli. I really need to make this at home.

I stayed at a really dingy dive hotel called the Ivanhoe, appropriately abbreviated "The-Hoe". It's the kind of hotel that you'd see in a cop movie, the place the track some serial killer to, without serial killers ( I think). The hotel motto is "we sell sleep", true to its word, b/c they don't sell anything else. The comforter was dingy & discolored, the floor dusty, a common bath, but no towel provided and hardly any heat. It did have wifi in the lobby, and the staff was helpful and pleasant. It was 300m from the bus station and 100m from where I was going Sat. night.

Saturday, I ended up at a 15th anniversary party of a local goth night Called "sanctuary" (obviously). Met up with Michael & Elaine again, as Michael had a photo booth set up for the event. The music was pretty lousy, but the crowd was fun. The music toward the end of the night was quite good, or I may have been quite drunk, either way, it amounts to the same; I ended up dancing a lot more.

I ended the night chatting with a homeless guy named Robert for about 30 min. He had a really long grayish beard, and spoke in this Canadian accent, that seems to be of Scottish influence. I'm sure there is a name for it. I enjoy talking with homeless folks who are in their right mind, b/c they know so much about their home city and usually give a unique current history /geography lesson I can't get from the internet.

Now, I'm on the bolt bus to Seattle without a care in the world, Absorbing the majestic landscape, while VNV "Automatic" provide the soundtrack. There are moments in my life where I feel such a surge of uncontrollable euphoria, I almost feel like vomiting. I'm having one of those moments now.

So far my vacation has been beautiful and it's only been 2 days. :)

Tale of the Tape VI: Deeper into the Data Pool.

I finally got my annual Blood tests back. Everything is near perfect. Nothing has change dramatically. I've now got 13 years of personal data to evaluate.

Total cholesterol: 108
HDL: 34
LDL: 66
Triglycerides: 41
Vit D: 31.2 ng/mL (normal range 30-80ng/mL)

One thing I've noticed is that my total cholesterol stays relatively the same, but the HDL/LDL ratio changes based on how much fake meat I eat. As I eat more Soy foods, my LDL goes up and my HDL goes down. The reverse is true when I eat whole foods. I knew my HDL was going to be lower than usual, b/c Native Foods has opened up in Chicago and I LOVE their Fake chick'n Run Ranch Burger. It's so tasty, it prevents me from trying anything else on the menu. Still, there's no indication having low HDL is bad if you have really low LDL. Some researchers believe you don't even need HDL when your LDL drops below 70.

Anyway, the other point is that I have been religiously taking 2000IU of Vit D2 daily. That's 5x the USRDA and 10X the EU-RDA and I still just barely get normal circulating 25-OH Vit D in my blood. I'm now taking 2000IU D2 +400IU Vitashine Vegan D3, and will get retested in January. Ideally, I want to know how much Vit D I need to take to get my 25OH-Vit D levels in the 40ng/mL range. The relationship between low 25-OH Vit D and certain cancers (ovarian, prostrate, pancreatic, breast, ) just keeps piling up. Btw, I no longer have morning bone aches after taking a daily Vit D supplement.

I really want to see if there is a significant difference between D2 & D3 for, at least, this vegan.

A few others I know got their Vit D tested and they all averaged around 8ng/mL, way low. If you aren't taking a Vit D supplement and live above 41N, (or 41S) you should be taking a Vit D supplement at least in the winter. I know at least 20 people who have gotten their Vit D tested an not a single person had "normal" levels. The body when exposed to sunlight produces up to 10,000IU before it shuts down it's endogenous production, which is a good indicator we need far more than we're getting.

It Started with a Thought: Diary of A Nutritional MadMan.

As I was packing for my Crazy European Bicycle Experiment(tm), I was thinking to myself "How Did I Get Here?" I mean, really? In total I will ride at least 2000 miles over 60 days on unknown terrain in the heat of Summer and I know I can do it. I don't even think it will be that challenging, not the kind of "OH GOD, WHEN WILL THIS END!?!!" challenging. I'm just a recreational athlete. I don't train everyday, unless you call riding around Chicago training.

I remember though, where it all began... It was when I posted "The Vegan Warrior" that started me down this road. [1]

This was just when I started working at the Health Food company. I've always eaten relatively healthy, and kept up with advancements in human nutrition, since my early days as a starving Wrestler, but my knowledge of human nutrition AND performance was, in retrospect, still sort of infantile compared to what I would come to know in the following years.

My diet & lifestyle evolved in small increments, picking up new foods little by little, increasing the frequency of whole foods I already liked, artichoke hearts, steamed broccoli, oats, almonds, etc... I started adding greens like chard, collards, kale, other grains like quinoa, amaranth, kasha, teff and more and more nuts, and a variety of beans and seeds.

As I learned more about preparing these foods, I bought appliances/utensils to help prepare them in varied ways. Dopamine receptors began to create those positive memories of foods and feeling. My palate began to change, to be more sensitive to subtleties of clove, cumin, lavender. I began to crave them, love them.

Just by absolute volume considerations, the addition of new foods started replacing tofurkey hot dogs, soy milk, seitan, soy ice cream. I didn't have to think about it. It just happened and my grocery bill dropped too.

As I scoured through nutritional research journals at the Health Food Company, I began incorporating the science into my diet. I added brazil nuts for selenium, savoy cabbage/pumpkin seeds for zinc, red wine marinated beets for betalins, made a loaf of Flax seed bread each week for Ω3's. All this may seem like too much, but it takes about as much thought as knowing orange juice has vitamin C, once you take the time to learn it.

I also became interested in knowing how certain food substances affected my blood/body morphology and thus began the "Tale of the Tape" experiments, Green Tea lowered my iron, Coconut Oil raised my Cholesterol (115-->140), but improved my cholesterol ratios, etc... I started doing kung fu regularly, added yoga to my exercise regime, bicycled year round as transportation, walked up stairs instead of taking the elevator.

The combination of sound nutrition, daily exercise, science and experimental data transformed my body in ways I never would have imagined 5 years ago. The food greatly reduced the recovery time during my marathon training, while maintaining my energy levels. I now repair at an extraordinary rate. It wasn't linear. It allowed me to work more, do more, which increased my recovery rate even further to the point where I could burn 1200 Cal/hour for 3 hours straight, a full pound of fat in 3 hours. [2]

The microflora populations in my gut evolved to digest plants to produce vitamins and carbs, break down glucose polymers and increase plant protein digestibility. I am in the best shape of my life, which is truly remarkable since I used to practice 3 hours/day, 6 days/week as a HS football player & wrestler. I never would've been able to run a 4 hour marathon in just 18 weeks of training back then, despite the advantage of my youth. And this year, my experimentally determined lactate threshold is up 10BPM to 172BPM, which calculates to < 30 year old athlete's heart. Injuries I've dealt with for years disappeared, slowly, but disappeared nonetheless.

Being a scientist, I'm always a skeptic, but a scientist is also an empiricist and it's irrefutable to me that my body excels on a whole food plant based diet. The data doesn't lie. I have statin drug like cholesterol levels without statins. I don't get sick anymore, not even colds, I need 40% less sleep than average folks. I don't get stomach aches, seasonal allergies, rarely get head aches (like 4x/year), etc... My blood parameters are ideal. Inside & out all the testing says I'm in great shape. My energy levels almost superhuman. My resting heart rate is in the low 40's.

Everything makes sense, from our evolutionary history, comparative anatomy, medical research, epidemiological studies. I really believe that we have been taught a big huge lie on what "food" is and how we should live. There's a number of Medical & Nutritional researchers who realize this as well, that know how subtle compositional changes in our food have dramatic long term effects.

The point is that I'm not unusual. I don't think I'm remarkable, or that my results are atypical. I think the Standard American Diet is a cumulative poison and people who eat this way have been living with a hangover for years.

I think the culture we were indoctrinated into makes us sick. The scientific data is piling up, but culture is so difficult to change once its ingrained into a person's mind. It's so difficult to unlearn what you've learned and when you question it, there's a dozen other people who try to push you back into line and tell you that you're crazy and you'll die. I went through that when I 1st became vegetarian en route to becoming vegan; I just didn't believe them.

I know I'm sounding preachy, but as I'm getting older, I'm seeing way too many people I care about feeling horrible all the time, and thinking it's just "old age." not realizing the body has an amazing capacity to repair itself given the right fuel, nutrients and stimulus.

Please, go see Forks Over Knives. The documentary is somewhat simplified and they do over-exaggerate a bit, but the science is so deep from how branch chained amino acids up regulate IGF-1 to increase cancer growth to the development of fat microdroplets dampening insulin receptors, to sulfur amino acids lowering blood pH and increasing bone demineralization, to phyto-nutrients altering kidney stone crystal structures allowing them to shrink and pass without incidence. Even micronutrients alter your bone structure on the molecular level to make them more pliable, more resilient to shock.

[1] The irony is that my years at the Health Food Company, gave me enough knowledge to realize I don't need supplements except B12 and Vit D. Those are the only supplement I take. Everything else is obtained from whole foods.

[2] This is what I mean by "non-linear" as you get in better shape, your capacity to do work increases, your ability to access your fat stores increases, so you don't get energy crashes, your blood glucose levels are more constant, and you don't get super hungry to the point where you binge eat. All this makes it easier to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle & body mass.

Summer Plans

I just booked my flight to WGT. Everything seems to be falling into place nicely. I used my ff miles to buy a one-way to LHR for Whitby, then booked a multi-city from LHR-ORD and then ORD--> BER for WGT, which turned out to be cheaper than a rt to/from BER. For all three segments the total cost was only $667 and now I have an open ended return in Jun.

My cousin is getting married in Portugal on Aug. 14. I'm about 70% positive I'm going to spend 2 months abroad, just wandering without a destination. I will rendezvous with my brother in Rome the week before and sometime I will be in Greece to visit Dr. Olga, but everything else is open ended. The only things preventing me are my cats, if I can't find someone to care for them while I'm away, and a number of business/personal opportunities forming.

I want to do a thoroughly minimalist European tour, ala Sun Tzu, where I show up with the essentials and secure things on location as I need them.

I can still work on my blog and can practice kung fu & excerise anywhere. If I can find some sort of 3G/4G wireless data plan in Europe I'm all set. I'm starting to see this cloud of stress/anger clearing. It's still there, but I know once I leave my position, a big source of it will disappear.
