Peter had been a slippery individual. He first found the boy's communicator, laying abandoned like a toy that lost its shiny. Pocketing it, he then stalked around the ship, sending the bees and other small insects out to locate the boy. He had been in the vents, but that was a short lived moment as he disappeared yet again. Sighing, he just shook his head at the one well-meaning person who had an encounter with Peter and continued on.
But now the bees were sure they located him. He collected one of them - a fat one with darker stripes instead of the normal yellow and listened to its hum before letting it join others like it. He walked along the path, and then, found his target.
The boy in the tree glowers down at him, his ginger hair and tan skin dull with grime. To the bees, he still smells like summer pollen and tropical trees, but he just looks like an unkempt child, dressed in ratty leather and tired leaves.
He tilted his head to the side, looking at the boy for a long moment. Then smiling slowly, he replied, "No. I'm suppose to be in charge of you and from the looks of it, you do need some care."
Guess what Peter? Your new temporary warden is on the prowl! Don't mind Hilbert as he starts to search the ship for the kid, more than happy to use his warden item to point out whatever vent or tree or something like that Peter's hiding in.
Hilbert is in luck, because he happens to catch Peter outside the vents during the day - a rare occurrence. The boy is just leaving the dining hall, a purloined jar of peanut butter in hand, when he sees the old man, but there are old men all over this ship. His lip curls, but he doesn’t mean to bother with him other than that.
Hilbert raises an eye as he spots Peter with the jar of peanut butter. He's not going to say something like 'don't eat that' or 'why would you steal an entire jar of peanut butter.' Instead, he will point out,
"That tastes better with jelly or on chocolate instead of eating straight."
Guess who it is again? This guy. Hilbert's wandered over to where Peter is so he can sass,
"If you wanted to make a point, there are far better ways to do so than attempting to stab someone." Another pause before, "Some of the wardens are working on finding ways to seal or keep you out of vents, by the way."
No sympathy there. It was literally a few days since the pairing and Peter acted out, Hilbert isn't doing anything to hide his irritation.
Benedict started his new duty with investigation first. He read Peter's ledger, he talked to a handful of individuals that knew the truth about Peter, and only then did he go seek the childlike entity out. He had no qualms about using his warden item as it was intended in order to find where Peter was today. The object was even still in his hand as he approached slowly. It looked a bit like a pocket watch, but a peek inside would reveal it had no clock and instead had strange symbols and dials upon its inner face.
"Peter?" he called out carefully as he came to a stop some distance away.
Today, all Peter is doing is loitering out on the deck, in an out of the way corner behind the chapel. He’s sitting on the deck, back braced against the building, staring out at the stars. His eyes occupy the child’s face while he’s alone, with its unchanging smile and the small gleaming light between its brows, but the moment he’s aware of the other’s presence, they blink over to the other mask, which scowls with long, bared teeth.
He was quiet for a moment. Notably, he did not leave nor fidgeted in any way to indicate that he didn't want to be here. Instead, his eyes were locked onto the spirit as he assessed it from top to bottom and back again. He smiled faintly as he stared at the glowing eyes and took two steps forward.
"New temporary pairings were announced today. I wanted to introduce myself so you would know who I am if you needed anything or if anything happened that would need my services as a warden occurred." He paused, held out a hand though he didn't expect a handshake. He indicated himself with a gesture instead. "My name is Benedict."
Wu Xin liked laying on the deck of the ship. It was debatable which place he liked more, the greenery of the garden and greenhouse, or here in the real open, under these alien stars. Tonight after a fulfilling dinner in the dining hall -they had been accommodating of his vegetarian preferences today- he laid up here on the deck railing, spread on the thin beam as he stared up at the sky with an arm tucked behind his back.
He might just be in the way of someone walking along that beam, but he wasn't moving.
"The ship is wide and the planks are broad. Young donor can easily go around this young monk," Wu Xin answered while looking upside down at the boy staring down at him.
"I'm not walking around the ship, I'm walking around the railing." Peter considers simply walking over him, and glances around to see if there's anyone who would see him do it.
[It takes some effort to track him down, but she's getting used to the fact that this is probably going to be the trend.]
Hi, Peter. I got knocked out--one of those barge stasis comas. Are you-- how are you, are you okay? We should talk, soon. I wanted to do something before I fell asleep that I didn't have a chance to do, but I want to talk about it with you first. And I want to find out if you need anything or if anyone bothered you while I was down.
She found Peter in a rare moment of productive(?) peace, lying on the grass near the greenhouse's pond, fashioning a little basket out of grass. It's not a tidy piece of craft - he doesn't have the patience to make it neat, and the clawed hands he's still stuck with aren't his own clever little fingers. Eyeing her sidelong, he doesn't stop what he's doing, putting on apathy.
[Weirdly, it almost makes her smile. She glances away to half-hide it, then sits down near him, giving him some space.]
Nope, sorry. I would have been back on my feet sooner.
[Wow, that joke felt weird. Note to self, don't say that again.]
The thing I wanted to do, that I want to talk to you about? It's your appearance, this was a punishment, right? For attacking people, a while back?
[It's very hard not to rub her wrist where she remembers the wire cutting into it. But she manages. Keeps her hands still, propping her up where she's sitting.]
It's kind of beyond unfair how long you've been stuck this way, and I wanted to say I'm sorry for that.
