Do you think it was a conscious decision to parallel Excellinor and Alvin with Old Wrinkly and Valhallarama ??

I was thinking of both Alvin and Valhallarama’s obsession with finding the lost Things, and how it really took over their respective lives.

Well nearly, in Val’s case.

Both of them neglected their child in favour of the prophecy. A prophecy that was told to them by their somewhat prophetic single parent, both trying to raise them to be a King.

There’s probably more, but I can’t think of anymore at the moment 😭

Does anyone know if Valhallarama realises she has half of the ruby hearts stone ?

Cuz she is one of the few people who knew of the prophecy, and was actively seeking out the lost things. So surely she knew the line about the stone was referring to what she already had ??

I thought maybe she did know, but after checking, she states in book 10: ‘I did not find a single Thing. Not one.’

So she doesn’t know she has half of it ?? Or knows, but doesn’t consider it a Thing because it isn’t complete ?

If anyone has their own thoughts, I’d love to hear them !!

Rumi 🤝 Hiccup

Outsider status in a society that is currently at war / fighting another species. However, after befriending a character from that species they have secret meetings with them, and must keep this new secret from their friends / family ( bonus points for the scene where their ( girl ) friend is catching onto them and suspicious, so they confront them whilst the main character is actively hiding one of the species they are at war with ). Main character then discovers the species they’re at war with are only serving a big bad evil, and so they team up to defeat it together. Loss occurs in the final battle. They are accepted into society.

Also both have a ‘dead’ mother.

Someone please talk to me about the httyd books ! I’m in such a craze rn and I need someone to talk to.

I’m convincing my friend currently to re-read them as they doesn’t remember any of it. I was talking to them about my ideas for a book accurate adaptation and they basically said: why don’t we do it ?

So if anyone has any anything to add, please do ! I’m thinking of opening a document anyone can add to if they have ideas.

that would be so cool...especially since they've decided to do the L.A adaption of the movies I'm Extra Extra disappointed that they STILL haven't done anything with the books

this kinda reminds of the reason why I wanted to become an artist+author, because when I watched and read stuff that had such cool concepts but didn't really execute well (or in this case never executed at all) I would decide "I'll just do it myself!! " so yeah, the idea of fans helping make a faithful adaption to the books resonates a lot with me

just because I'm in a Snotlout CRAZE right now, I was thinking whether his character should be foreshadowed to have the depth he has in book 11? not at first maybe, but I like how when he confronted Hiccup in book 11 he mentioned how he kind of resented himself for acting mean to Hiccup (bc it was un-Herolike) so I think suggesting that Snotlout isn't just a one dimensional bully character outside of his actual character arc might be a good way to foreshadow his redemption :] that just be my opinion though

Yes ! I think some subtle foreshadowing earlier would be amazing for his character, especially cuz in the first couple books he is kinda treated a one-dimensional bully.

I saw the live action with friends yesterday, and thought it was interesting they added more of a focus on Snotlout. So I think it’s a brilliant idea to add it to the (largely hypothetical) book adaptation.

Thinking about how Stoick decided not to banish his son as a baby, which comes back later when Hiccup is banished to his supposed death.

Grimbeard decided to banish his son as a baby, which also comes back later after he discovers his Hiccup lives despite it.

Two father making different decisions at their son’s birth, inadvertently creating the inverse reaction.

Weird parallel ?

Have you watched Race to the Edge ? If so, what’s your fav episode ?

Also are you planning on reading the httyd books ( I highly recommend ) ?

My favorite Race To The Edge episode has to be the Zippleback Episode. Purely on Hiccup and different dragons other than Toothless. I loved it. Loved how Hiccup-centric it was.

And I was genuinely surprised with how they showed that Hiccup has hidden strength but doesn't use it at all? He has it in him. He just doesn't use it as much due to the lack of confidence built up.

I just read the PDF version of the first book of httyd by Cressida Cowell. I really liked it. Was surprised at how different it was overall to the movies but still peak. 100% I'm just reading there pjo books first cause my mom bought the first five and I'm hooked onto it.

overall the book itself was GOOD. I liked it. Might continue, but still in the lines of unsure.

Ooo Zippleback Experience ? That’s a good one, I agree with you on the interesting dynamics it creates, so cool to see Hiccup interact with the other dragons other than Toothless.

Also I know you’ve probably heard this a lot, but the books get soo much better from the first one. The plot really fleshes out and all the characters are built up and have so many interesting arcs.

Don’t blame you for wanting to read Percy Jackson first though ! I remember a couple years back when I read them for the first time I went through them so so fast !

So, I’ve been a fan of the httyd books for as long as I could read and I’ve always been slightly (hugely) disappointed that there hasn’t been a faithful adaptation. Am I the only one ?

Anyway so I started brainstorming ideas of if there was an adaptation what it would look like, - feel free to add on more this is just what I have so far.

- Becoming a Hero the Hard Way -

Ideas:

- Sketchy art-style with lots of moving lines and colours - think spider-verse, PIB the last wish, arcane

- Could use 3D models with an overlay of sketch lines and lineart

- Use audiobook dialogue as audio, probably just the talking scenes, for everything else will be drawn at least for now while it’s still quite small

- Keep character versions as close to the books as possible, might have to make them more realistic looking depending on the final animation style

- Characters who are more ‘stable’ have more fps, whereas characters like Alvin who are more unstable have fewer fps and are more janky and unsettlingly animated

- Maybe use slight colour filters on certain scenes to symbolise relevance to books/dragon time prophecy eg book 5 - orange, book 2 - navy

- Use sound for symbolism or themes for dragon time prophecy anytime it is mentioned/ foreshadowed

- Either make movies or seasons/series ? - if series maybe join two books together until like 10 ?

- Could have 4 trilogies/sagas 1-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8-9, 10-11-12 ? Be named different things , could play on word for the prophecy ?

- 1st - training your dragon / httyd?

- 2nd - the quest

- 3rd - the prophecy

- 4th - the dragon jewel

- Or have two 6 part seasons ?

This is all quite rough right now but I just wanted to put it out there in case anyone else is interested ?

I love this so much and Im still dreaming of the day they make a movie adaptation. If I was any good at animation I would love to fully animate some book scenes and use the audio books for voice lines. But alas here I am not being able to do anything but a simple animatic.

oooh I love this idea so much! I have wished so much for the httyd books getting adapted into a animated series and those ideas are so cool! A sketchy art style would fit it so well (I personally would love it to be 2D) and I wouldn't have thought of the idea of more "unstable" characters being animated more janky, very cool idea. I think that would work really well for certain scenes, like when they're being chased.

As I reread your post, it seems more like you're thinking of a fanmade production, and I initially took it as a "what if" scenario for a real production, but I'd still like to share some thoughts!

as for how the books would be split up in a TV adaptation, I have thought a lot about this before! I think that a series would the best, breaking up the books like they did for A Series of Unfortunate Events (the show not the movie). What they did is they did two episodes for each book. I think that there should be two seasons: the fun silly one, and the darker one. The first season would either end on book seven (the last book I consider to be silly and the epilogue starts to hint at what to come) or book eight (ending on a cliff hanger with Furious's promise). More likely book seven.

The prologues and epilogues are from the audiobooks and play at the beginning and end of the episodes. The opening plays after the prologue and as the series progresses, more and more easter eggs come up in them (the lost things, Fishleg's lobster necklace, etc). The opening and credits songs are from the books?

Ooo that’s such a good idea to split the books like that ! It’s been playing on my mind a bit on how to do that, but that idea would work really well. Especially with two seasons, and one ending on a cliffhanger.

Also yes, really want the easter eggs to be a big part in it. Basically symbolism you’d only catch the second time (or I guess if you’ve read the books :D).

Yeah, unfortunately I am just one person, so all I can do rn is just work on it as a small fan made thing. But if it gets bigger I’d love to team up with other fans to help bring this project to life !

This may be a dumb question, but did Hiccup ever become chief of the Hairy Hooligans ? Because that was the main plot of basically the first half of the series.

If I remember correctly, he was never actually chief ? Obviously he became King of The Wilderwest at the end of book 12, but is it ever established what happens after Stoick inevitably died ?

Did the chiefdom go to Hiccup, because it couldn’t go to Snotlout anymore (RIP) so was it Baggybum ? Or did Hiccup just rule as chief of Berk AND King of The Wilderwest ?

Anyone know anything ? Please help

ok but like!! what if snotlout could have been chief if he had accepted Hiccup as his leader and been loyal to him—like if he’d given up his percieved right to be heir and fought on Hiccup’s side only for Hiccup to grow up and become king, leaving the chief’s position open for Snotlout again—Snotlout was also his own undoing etc etc
