Rogan: last night, I had one of those extremely cogent, cinematic, screaming nightmares, but the story annoyed me so much I refuse to make it a real story. Instead, I post it here.

There was a people who lived in a cold green land of forests, hills, and snow. The winters seemed to last forever, and the snow was so heavy that they had built a roofed-over compound where they would retreat for the winter, living safely for months, sealed in by snow. The people had been there a long time. They were happy there.

Then the bat people started appearing.

Our oldest computer is a AST laptop from 2000 named Obsolete. It runs Windows 98 and had long since retired from duty, on account of it being so old that it was unable to do much besides run Office 97 and play MS-DOS games. It could read CDs, but not write to them, so data could only exit via floppy or zip disc.

However, it turns out Obsolete is PERFECT for inventorying periodicals at the sci-fi library.

Hey everybody, it's that time again: time to vote for which stuff gets the LiberaPay/Patreon money this month!

As always, anyone can vote (please do!), but LiberaPay and Patreon patrons get double weight for their votes.  (Due to Patreon's porn purges, I really encourage you to use LiberaPay, if you get a choice.) If you want to see the blurbs for any of these works, those are here!  (You can also leave your requests there; requesting a story or essay is always free!) If you don't have a DW and so can't do the poll, that's okay; just leave your vote in the comments below; anon comments are turned on.

Which works gets the money, and thus posted this month?  YOU CHOOSE, readers!

HM.com update: Anatomy Lesson et al!

Sneak: We have uploaded Sneak Attack!, Fluff!, and the Anatomy Lesson (Text-only version here) to healthymultiplicity.com! (Please keep in mind that Anatomy Lesson is NSFW! It's about learning nonhuman anatomy for intimate stuff!)

...well, at least the site is up-to-date now, even if there are still a lot of links to this blog that can't be viewed in Mississippi. But I only just sort of got this computer working again, everything else can wait til later.

Sneak: I did it! I am on a library computer to introduce MULTI MEDIA BINGO! :D (And many thanks to [personal profile] malymin who linked me this Rainbow Color Palettes site!)

THE BINGO CARD! (in bandwidth-saving HTML which I'm not sure how mobile friendly it will be BUT WE SHALL FIND OUT!) )

Here are the rules (which I am not taking very seriously!) )

LET THE BINGO BEGIN!

Sneak: I was going to post a bingo card and Mori was going to post Anatomy Lesson, but we installed updates and now our Internet and headphones don’t work. -_- We even specifically DIDN’T install the kernel update to avoid this exact problem before we were done, but I guess we should NEVER install ANY updates before doing work. Lesson learned.

I guess it'll have to wait til we fix this, because typing HTML tables with my thumbs on a broken smartphone sounds terrible.

Multi Media Bingo? @_@

Sneak: I got a 1 AM idea, inspired by [personal profile] duckprintspress’s 40 Books Challenge: what if I made a Multi Media Bingo? @_@ (“Multi” being here our idiosyncratic and inadequate term for all sorts of singlet-norm-trespassing, because “multi media” is more fun to say. You get to choose what counts for you!)

I scrawled a bingo card for folks to fill out, either by AUDIENCING a piece of media, or CREATING it. (So the square for “singlet-busting song,” you could achieve by listening to one, singing one, or recording one!) There would be no time limit! (We took a decade to finish the Stuff100!)

People who achieve the bingo get a cute little icon for winning it, made by me! BLACKOUT winners would get a beefed up icon OR a offline sticker I make, because my roomy has a color printer and sticker paper and I am flush with power!

Would anyone be interested in doing this?

Folks may have noticed that the site has been slow for logged-out users over the last while. This is partly because we separate traffic by logged-in, "logged out but have visited the site before", and "logged out, never visited the site before" and assign the fewest resources to the last category (because we're pretty confident the overwhelming majority of it is bot and scraper traffic, even if it's often impossible to say for sure). The flood of garbage traffic is a plague and a scourge the entire internet is dealing with, and it's hitting small sites the hardest as operators get better and better at cloaking their requests to look like real, authentic use. We long ago hit the point where adding more resources is a possible solution (because they just eat them up as soon as we do), and splitting traffic lets us keep the site usable for our actual users without wasting too much server power on garbage.

We've now, lucky us, reached the point where the "logged out, have never visited the site before" path is just flooded all the time, and the "logged out but have visited the site before" path is suffering some of the overflow. We've made some changes to the routing to try to improve things for logged out users who have visited the site before and keep it at "it may be a little bit slow, but at least it works" instead of "it keeps timing out", and we've seen some improvements, but if you're accustomed to browsing the site while logged out, I'm really sorry but it may continue to be a little miserable.

You will get the fastest page loads and the best performance by browsing the site logged in. If you are having trouble loading the front page to log in, bookmark the direct login page. We can't route the front page to the "more power" server pool, because it's a common target for garbage traffic, but we've switched /login over to "more power" and we'll try to keep it there as long as we can unless it starts getting slammed, too.

Meagan Morris Gets 50 Years

Meagan Morris, who I used to play D&D with back in my Texas days, has been sentenced to fifty years in (presumably male) prison. Des Rolando Sanchez Estrada has been sentenced to thirty years for moving a box of anarchist zines, much like ones I see every year at the Boston Anarchist Book Fair.

If something should happen to me, I request folks pirate my works as hard as they can, so they can still be of use to others. My Ebook Megapack is a one-time purchase in perpetuity, meaning that once you buy it, you can download any new books I upload to it until itch.io kicks me off or someone shuts them down. (It is, in fact, the only way to purchase AllFam on itch.io now.) If you prefer not itch.io, the Megapack is also on Payhip. I've also been seeding my files with some folks offline, with the hopes they can be saved and spread even if we're gone--stuff like the Cultiples sources that've rotted off the Internet, digitized journals of mine, etc. That journalist who made that nice article about me bought the Megapack long before it was cool, and she's fled the country, so I've let her know so she can be a source of my works later.

Let's keep resisting together.
