I got inspired thanks to reading John Lindow’s scholarship hypothesizing that the most notable traits of Vitharr and Váli (the silence and the ungrooming, respectively) represent ritual abstentions, subordinate to their vengeance roles. Essentially, an outward and visible sign of inhabiting a particular societal role and/or a particular identity.

And Leman’s three identity crises in a trenchcoat, so he needs all the help he can get in managing that, and he should do it by having iron control over what his hair does when.

Some thoughts:
- Identity is social and changeable as well - the feedback loop between what you are and what others perceive you to be, and whether it’s even meaningful to distinguish between those two
- Cutting off all your hair when you are upset/grieving or otherwise experiencing major disruptions of selfhood
- You could just straight-up port over the Váli thing if you want (<- world’s unsubtlest bid for Lost fic, lol)
- The advantages of having a nonverbal, impenetrable means of communicating one’s identity and/or emotional state to others with the same context. Also, it’s an expression that someone who doesn’t really want you to have that emotional state can’t easily change or prevent - I mean, what are they going to do, forcibly pull out your entire hairstyle and redo it? Make it grow out from your scalp faster?
- However, a malefactor with enough context also has a more directed way to traumatize, shame, or otherwise do hurt beyond what nonconsensual hair modification would normally do, because they can force you to inhabit a painful or undesirable identity/mode of being through it

Having control over your hair and how you style it is also a basic but fundamental aspect of physical autonomy and personal/cultural identity; Daevon has not done these characters well in terms of physical autonomy and personal/cultural identity, so I’d love an investigation into that.
- The cutting of one’s own hair, or the adoption of a very different hairstyle, as a form of self-harm - either as the standard kind or as an outgrowth of the idea that the complete destruction of the self is a necessary prerequisite to allow anything good to regrow in the ashes
- The intimacy and trust involved in helping someone else with their haircare. It's a physically close and vulnerable thing to let someone else put their hands all over your head and neck - but also humans are very social and grooming is nice...
- Cultural hairstyle norms - I am sure Adytum and Daevon, let alone any other cultures, have very different concepts of the ideal hair, both in innate colour/texture and in style
- Temple rings, or beads, or other objects plaited into the hair (this can interact with cultural norms). (Saarn with temple rings my beloved)
- The equestrian tags are there for Lovataar - I wholeheartedly believe that she is absolutely a Horse Girl and that's a little complicated for her due to it being a Daevite thing

They both have such nice long hair in this, perfect for getting disheveled or being pulled or worshipped or so on 👀👀 I have no t/b preferences here though I do love it when the characters look at it through a power differential thing and the Jester topping or Matthias caring for his hair is a deliberately taken reversal of power etc.

Would also love to see Matthias fixing his hair to go undercover among the people? Maybe he tries to do it and ends up looks basically exactly the same and the jester has to help him fix it up somehow. (And maybe that deliberate recontextualizing him as non-king is what sparks intimacy?)
