motherjones.com/media/2011/04/vivi…I woke up this morning to an inbox full of messages, one of which included the link above.
Vivian Maier (February 1, 1926 – April 21, 2009) was a New York born amateur photographer who grew up in France and returned to America where she worked for 40 years as a nanny. During this time has reportedly taken over 100,000 photos. Her work remained undiscovered until after her death when John Maloof purchased a box full of her negatives at an auction in hope to discover some images of early Portage Park (during the time he was writing a book on the Chicago neighborhood of Portage Park). Maloof is currently in the process of collating as much information about Maier and presenting her name and work, humbly, to the public. Maier executed her photographs with a
Rolleiflex camera. Her photographs usually depicted images of the 1950 - 1960 Chicago and New York streets. Maiers photography has been classified under the genre of 'Street Photography'.
Which brings me to the subject of Street Photography.
Street Photography, is a form of documentary photography that reveals subjects during candid situations in public spaces. It uses the technique '
Straight Photography' in so much as it provides a pure and realistic depiction. Some other famous Street Photographers include
Weegee and
Diane Arbus.
I really love photography.
