There is so much going on in this movie, it’s difficult to sum up. There’s colonialism, discrimination of all kinds, homophobia, HIV/AIDS related issues, political violence, the Irish Troubles, family dynamics, overcoming trauma and prejudice, self actualization, feminism, even intraqueer issues.
This is the story of a young person in London who recognized that another community, very different from his own, was nevertheless experiencing the same oppression from their government. It’s about people putting aside their superficial differences to recognise their shared humanity. It’s about people learning how to recognize their true enemy and how to become true allies. Quite simply, this is the most inspirational movie I have ever seen.
