Welcome to Da Dafoe DaPrimer
I'll be giving an overview on the actor, as well as my recommended Dafoe movies.
Who is DAFOE?
Willem Dafoe is an American actor, recognizable by his granny smoker voice, expressively bony face, shark toothed grin, reptilian physique, and raw sexual charisma.
Dafoe is a chameleon of an actor. He is most well known for playing da foe in movies: a villain who often dies horrible deaths. He's also often cast as stoic father figures, grizzled mentors, sexy milfs, and has a penchant for being asked to engage in booty-out nudity and sex scenes.
He can fill any role, and do any stunt you ask of him: from being buried alive and swallowing real dirt (The Lighthouse), engaging in candlewax sex play and snorfing Madonna's Madussy (Body of Evidence), and getting crucified in a movie thus getting crucified IRL by religious extremists (The Last Temptation of Christ).
If you're a director who needs an old guy to crawl naked on all fours and bark (which he's done in both The Lighthouse and Northman), Dafoe's your guy.

DaFun Dafoe Facts
- He pronounces his own name as "Day-foe".
- He was hired for his first movie role in "At Heaven's Gate" for his "ethnic" looking face. Then he was fired for giggling during a scene.
- He's from wisconsin, but is more recognizable for his New Yawkaccent.
- One of the little kids acting in "The Florida Project" pogged out when he learned he'd be working with the Green Goblin.
- He has an ENORMOUS ... rib cage. So he can probably hold a lot of oxygen.
- Madonna personally chose Dafoe to costar with her in the erotic thriller "Body of Evidence".
- His "Lil' Willy" fell out of its tuck during his crucifixion scene in "The Last Temptation of Christ". Being crucified, he could not tuck himself back in. After minutes of awkwardness, a poor camera boy finally got the gumption to put him back in its place.
- He keeps in his serpentine shape by doing yoga.
- Only you can decide if his hair is red or brown.
My favorite Dafoe movie
Many people inf my generation were introduced to him from his role as Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin in "Spider-man"( 2002).His character in Spider-Man 2002 exemplifies everything he does best: thespian monologues, theatrical physical movement, and whimpering emotional pain. I fell in love as soon as I saw The Goblinization Scene in theaters as a yung lad.
Norman Osborn is an ultra-capitalist CEO of a defense contracting company who ignores his son and is driven mad by his recent business failures. Already evil enough in human terms, he also has an alter ego in The Green Goblin that berates Norman's weakness and enacts all his darkest personal desires: a lust for vengeance, lust for power, and lust for Spider-Man's friendship and death.
His most famous scene in this movie is probably The Mirror Scene. Heck, it's gotta be well known if I saw it in one of my film classes. He plays two completely different characters at once, Norman and The Goblin, in the same long take. It's Jekyll and Hyde, it's Domme and Submissive, and it's incredibly fascinating to see his movements and language transform back and forth, especially if you're an animator or into selfcest. 😏 The Norman/Goblin dynamic is further expanded on when they Attack The Heart - Norman can't bear to hurt Peter, but the Goblin demands vengeance for Peter spurning their love.
Speaking of love...
Every scene he shares with Spider-Man is intentionally filmed as seduction, as the Goblin continuously attempts to lure the webcrawler into a failed, forced friendship. You may have seen the memes of the Goblin's huge green ass flying through the air.
They continue to flip positions, proving themselves versatile adverseries in love and war.

Their rooftop scene is commonly called The Proposal, and is full of innuendo. The Goblin roofies the Spider, manhandles his body, and demands his hand in infernal partnership. Not to mention in the kidnapping scene preceding the proposal, Spider-Man himself calls Gobby the "Mom" to his "Dad".
Finally, it ain't spoilers, cuz it ain't a Dafoe villain unless he dies horribly: Gobby meets his grisly demise at his own hands, impaled in the penis by his bladed Goblin Glider. A fitting death for the campy, slinking seductress. Norman gets one last word after his dragsona's death, pleading with Peter, "Don't tell Harry"... He loves his horrible son after all! And Peter dutifully obeys his dead girlfriend, stripping Norman of his Goblin drag outfit and laying him gently, naked and dead, in his mansion for his son to discover. This sets up the plot for the next two movies in which Harry not being told drives Harry to hatred and murder.
Spider-Man 2 and 3 are classic movies with much less Dafoe but still have classic scenes in which Dafoe's character torments Harry, as well as the most important piece of Dafoe art ever: The giant portrait of Willem Dafoe that has captivated hearts since 2007.

Where is she now?!
Da Other Dafoe Movies
Dafoe is extremely prolific - he's made over 100 movies in his decades-long career, and he keeps making at least 5 or 10 a year! It may be daunting to pick through his vast filmography, but never worry! I'm trying to go through his movies and do tiny reviews, and I'll tell you which ones are worth watching if you're not a Dafoe fetishist (yet...)- (1999) Boondock Saints: An action movie with Dafoe playing a gay (yet homophobic) detective on the trail of twin vigilantes. THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT. The movie is a decent dudebro film, and Willem is hamming it up like it's Christmas. The highlight of the entire film is a scene in which Willem is dressed in a wig and short dress, fully engaged in seduction blowjob mode to finish his detective work. He's HOT!
- (2000) Animal Factory: A prison drama with Dafoe playing Earl, the old inmate protecting a young man from prison rape. The plot hinges on prison sexuality, so the movie is quite homoerotic. For example, there is a scene in where the two main characters "jokingly" hump on a bed after discussing prison rape. And Dafoe goes to very extreme lengths once he knows his ward has been violated. Danny Trejo's in it, one of my other favorite actors! Mickey Rourke plays a trans woman! And Steve Buscemi directed it! I see many people saying it's a realistic depiction of life in prison. This is a real gem in Dafoe's wide discography, that I don't see many other folks talking about.
- (2000) Shadow Of The Vampire: A horror-comedy with Dafoe playing Count Orlok, a vampire who's playing Nosferatu in this movie about making a movie. Dafoe's in manic pixie dream demon mode, hamming it up once more with vampire grins and emo brooding.
- (2009) Antichrist: A sex horror with Dafoe playing the husband only known as "He". This movie is simultaneously a recommendation and avoidance. Most people would warn for the gratuitous sexual violence and torture. But I mostly dislike the director's long, drawn out misogyny. I have to give this movie a recommendation for anyone looking for DaCock and DaBall torture.
- (2017) Florida Project: A drama with Dafoe playing an old, tired, but kind motel keeper. The movie's a tearjerker about little kids living in poverty, so it's nice to have a character like Dafoe's for both us and the characters to lean back on for comfort. Dafoe's not a main focus, and the movie is still worth watching if you're into human drama.
- (2018) At Eternity's Gate: A biopic drama with Dafoe as a pathetic and teary Van Gogh. The movie is long and slow and pretty. Van Gogh is an old neet, needy for love. But his art is universally disliked, and only his brother loves him. Good tragedy porn.
- (2019) The Lighthouse: A horror-comedy with Dafoe playing a hoary old Lighthouse keeper who antagonizes Edward Cullen. The movie is centered on isolation, anxiety, and toxic masculinity, with plenty of intentionally homoerotic scenes to hammer home the themes of what men expect of manhood. Dafoe's character goes from dominant to submissive, which is my number one favorite yaoi theme. Watch out for mermaid AND tentacle sex!

7/1/23 06:32 (UTC)Reckoning is great! I finally got fic for it after asking for actual years. He and Paul Bettany have chemistry for DAYS and it's a chance to let his theatre nerd flag fly.

7/1/23 01:37 (UTC)gosh, those old spider man movies had some amazing villains. dok ock has a pretty impressive swathe of fangirls to this day as well, but i love that you've got a very big special place in your heart to dafoe <3 it's a testament to both his real acting and real charisma that the spider man scenes in your brain started playing in my head almost beat for beat despite only seeing them ~3 times like, 15 years ago. killer stuff!

7/1/23 01:59 (UTC)I'm always amazed how my faves are not everyone else's faves! The first villain in the first spiderman movie... overshadowed by the sequel?!?! More Dafoe for me to love! Goblinfuckers are absolutely unhinged compared to the normal ock fans :l
