[Ever since he turned back from a deer, Keith may have noticed Lance has an easier time interacting with him. Because his memories are really messed up and he forgot he has feelings for him. So of course when Bolin disappears and part of his house is burned down by Chloe, his first instinct is to text Keith… also, he might be a little intoxicated.]
heeey man. so part of my house totally burned down and i found something in there that i think used to be yours. probably. i think.
[He'd noticed, but was trying not to look the gift lion in the mouth that he was apparently no longer persona non grata.]
Your house burned down?
[Because, honestly, that was kind of more pressing than finding something that might have belonged to a previous version of himself that he didn't remember being.]
[Maul shoots off a video he thinks is going to Ezra. It's not too bad and thankfully isn't anything like the dirty talk he sometimes sends Reaper!]
I have a question about boundaries. If I've made it clear that antagonizing me will end up with a person getting hurt because I am dangerous and could easily kill them and they continue to do so anyway, is it their fault or mine? I know this doesn't apply to Jedi but I'm still learning about how to set limits with people.
[Keith picked up his omni when it made a noise to indicate a new message. Watching the video, he raised an eyebrow slightly at the question.
Frankly, Keith kind of figured that, if someone keeps pushing after being warned and/or told to stop, they deserved what they got in the way of a response, but... killing them? That might be a little extreme.
Though, the fact that Maul sent this to him... Okay, he had to ask.]
Are you seriously asking me if you're the asshole right now?
This is the wrong number this message was meant to go to!
[Maul says frostily once he realizes his mistake. But after a pause as he thinks it over, he adds on:]
But you're the definition of what most people here define as a 'good person', so I suppose you'll do for the purpose of actually answering the question. I have been learning about boundaries recently and I am trying to learn how to set some of my own.
[Look at that, Maul is earnestly trying a different method to deal with people other than 'fly into a rage and brutally murder someone' when they test his patience.]
Sorry this took so long. :( Feel free to drop if it's too old.
Well, that makes sense, I guess. [After all, the idea that Maul would reach out to him for anything had Keith baffled.
Wait... someone actually believed he was a good person? That was something Keith still had trouble getting used to. Most people liked to assume he was the asshole.
He hesitated for a moment.]
I mean... it's certainly their fault for continuing to push, I guess? They were asked to stop, and kept doing it. So, like... you're not wrong for being angry.
It's still probably not the best idea to actually kill them...
Yes. You see, it irks me when I've made it abundantly clear I am a dangerous person to people and could kill them easily. But then they continue to antagonize me, acting as if I should just sit there and take their abuse.
[He pauses for a moment before asking:]
....What about maiming them?
[Maul asks. His tone is almost comparable to that of a small child asking if it's okay to hit their playmate if they're being mean, which really isn't far off given Maul's emotional maturity levels.]
Yeah... I can definitely understand that. I don't like when people keep pushing things like that, either.
[But... okay, wow... maiming? Keith looked a little doubtful.]
I mean, in a place like this, most people will probably just look the other way if you go with a fist fight or something. But, once you start breaking bones or drawing blood, somebody's gonna think you took it too far.
Though, if they make the fight bigger first, that's a different matter entirely.
People who do so with me are either extremely foolish or have no idea what I am capable of. And I have no patience for either sort.
[He listens to what Keith has to say, a thoughtful expression on his face. It's clear he's trying to absorb what he's being told instead of letting it go in one ear and out the other as he used to when told things.]
Hmmm, I shall take note of that.
[After all, it usually doesn't take too much in the city to turn a small fight into one with much larger stakes.]
I have tried not to take things too far as of late but I will finish a fight even if I didn't start it.
[ There's apparently a huge difference between knowing that Keith is here and actually seeing him face to face. Look, logically him being in the house makes sense, because he's always lived with Shiro, at least part time, right? She feels like an idiot for not stopping to think that that meant maybe he'd actually. Y'know. Be there at the same time.
It takes her a few seconds to realize that she's kind of awkwardly staring at him without moving and she quickly goes to shove her hands into the pockets of her jacket as she looks at the floor instead. She should say something. Right???? ]
[Honestly, people awkwardly staring at him wasn't something new. Usually, though, they said something first, and he either would stand there awkwardly staring at them only for them to return that, or he'd say something weird that elicited that kind of response (or got the other person angry at him, but this was usually less problematic).
Granted, having someone do that to him first wasn't entirely new anymore, but it was something that had sort of become a part of being in Trench considering that he'd gone and made friends or had... well, other types of relations with people in the past. Or his other self did. Or he forgot when he got 'reset'. Or whatever the official explanation was.
It didn't make it any less frustrating and unnerving. So, he kind of stared back for a moment until she finally said something.]
Not much.
[Yup. Awkward.]
Chloe, right?
[Did she know him before, too? Keith seemed to remember someone mentioning that he'd met her... or whatever. He, once again, hadn't been told the details, and felt like he was at a severe disadvantage. Again.
Chloe left. [ There's a beat as she holds up her hand to emphasize the pun, but it's quickly followed by her pulling a face and groaning. ] Sorry. That was bad even for me. I uh— don't do... [ What? Awkward reunions? He clearly doesn't remember, he'd never have to confirm who she was if he did. ] Greetings very well.
[ Yeah. Those.
She clears her throat, shoving her hands into her pockets again. ]
Yeah. I'm... I'm Chloe. New housemate. Usually a lot cooler, but apparently not with strangers. Which you are. A stranger. That I do not know.
[ This is going swimmingly. Chloe regrets opening her mouth already. ]
[Oh no... more puns... Keith pulled a face and then sighed.]
Yeah... I um... Shiro's good at puns. ["Good" being a relative term here.]
Yeah. [Another face. What's with everyone picking on his hair?] Keith. [Though her not-so-subtle stumbling over him being a stranger did kind of raise a few flags.]
It's okay if you say we've met before. I'm used to it. [Not that he was saying they had, but... Yeah.] No one's said anything if something happened between us, so... consider it a clean slate, I guess. [He sounded pretty resigned at the idea.]
[ She says it lovingly. Honest. Not that there was much other way for her tone to ever come out when it came to Shiro anymore.
It's okay. The words make her shoulders tense instead of relax, though she couldn't pin point why. She doesn't know how to have clean slates, but she's supposed to be bettering herself as a person or something, right? She wishes she was a better liar so she could just insist she has no idea who he is, but it's been painfully obvious that she is not when it comes to these things. ]
It's gotta be shitty, though, right? I mean. Not that it matters. With all the alternate universes out there, you might be a completely different dude than the one I knew before.
[That got an awkward laugh, and Keith nodded. Yeah, definitely good at torturing people with them. For all of the "Garrison Hero" stuff he got, Shiro really was just a giant dork of a person. In a good way.]
Yeah... kinda. [It was. Keith frowned. There really was no other way to look at everyone knowing him and he didn't know them. Or forgot them. Whatever it was. He sighed.] I could be. There's really no sure way to tell. So, if that's the case, then we probably never met before anyway. Still a clean slate, right? [He shrugged.]
I'm kinda used to people knowing of me by now. It's not something I really like all that much because people like to make assumptions that way, but it's something I've always dealt with... whether good or bad. [At least it wasn't bad assumptions as much now as it used to be.]
Having a reputation is a real bitch no matter what universe you're in, I guess.
[ She'd certainly had enough experience with assumptions. Back home it was worse, but even having people think good of her in this place and the dream put some kind of pressure on her shoulders she hated. ]
Not that I wouldn't have had assumptions anyway. Shiro never shut up about you when I first got to know him. Gets into that Proud Dad groove and just rolls with it. You should count your blessings that he doesn't have embarrassing wallet photos.
[This year, Maul had decided to behave himself when it came to giving gifts, unlike in years past where he broke into people's houses rather like Santa himself did. All gifts are left on the porch or front step of the recipient's home for them to find in the morning.
All Keith would get was a bag of coal from Maul. Was he petty? Oh yes. Accompanying it was a note in blocky handwriting wishing him a Merry Christmas (He's only about 75% sarcastic with that greeting!) signed from Darth Maul.]

Oh
