dreamwidth first impressions
Apr. 16th, 2009 03:51 pmIt hasn't taken longer than ten minutes to switch off the styling, change the settings to what i'm used to.
the lynx theme is not only really easy to read and use, it's the only one I've found with these properties. no css hover drop down menus, no large icons, just the content, ma'am.
the lynx theme isn't perfect - it still has a lot of annoying javascript (see userinfo page). maybe I'm just old and grumpy, but I find most of so called web design to always be style over content. fuck the style, just give me the content.
again: various things are in columns for no reason, and a shit load of administrative debris.
I'll wait and see if there are any themes that revolve around the revolutionary idea that people are wanting to read text rather than click buttons.
next up:placeholders on, videos off, other peoples styling off, screening + logging anonymous comments by default.
other people as a rule post large images, annoying youtubes which clog up browsers. I really wish this was default (and don't tell me to install flashblocker).
but one of the things I like about livejournal was the ability to be ignorant of other peoples attempts to blind me or make me gouge out my eyes with their colour schemes.
I saw a button for this but it was disabled. This would be nice.
There are only two journal styles avaliable, neither of which look particularly appealing. I miss plain and simple generator.
tiny things:
the favicon (apart from having lovely alpha issues) is a little too close to debian.
on the whole, the one thing that would make me jump ship quickly is the ability to add rss feeds without paying a token fee for more usericons.
at least i've managed to get my standard username here.
in summary:
on the whole good, but not significantly different or an improvement on my experiences with livejournal yet.
