Support
The Friends of the Teaneck Public Library has played a significant role in the development of the Library and its facilities and programs.
The Friends organization was established in 1979 by people from every segment of the town. Friends have done a lot in the last 40 years:
- Friends were influential in gaining support for renovation and expansion that doubled the Library’s usable space in 1980. This also regained the use of the auditorium, which is available to the community and is the site of concerts, lectures, films, training, children’s programs, and more.
- Friends have acquired items including a concert piano, a video-projection system for a movie-size screen, auditorium curtains, carpet for the auditorium and reference room, furniture for the lounge area and children’s room, the signage system, large-print books for the visually impaired, display fixtures, and a business computer, just to name a few.
- Friends have sponsored programs of all kinds on a regular basis, including Makers Day 2019 with more than 900 participants.
Today, the Friends is an influential organization of more than 600 members who are growing as they help the community. The Friends will continue their work:
- Making people aware of the Library, its special resources, services and needs.
- Supporting the Library in its contacts with the public and government, as a voice for continued improvement and growth.
- Sponsoring programs and assisting where needed in the Library’s programming.
- Providing the Library with services and materials not included in the Library’s regular budget.
We invite you to join us in continuing this work. You will contribute to the growth of an outstanding institution, enjoy working with new friends from our diverse community who have the same goals, increase your knowledge of interesting subjects, and enrich the lives of others, from children to senior citizens.

Library Tote Bags
Sturdy shopping tote bags, featuring the Friends logo, are available for just $3 each at the circulation desk. Since they’re perfect for grocery shopping, trips to the library, or for knitting or needlework projects, you may want to pick up more than one. (Many food stores give cents-off as a reward for using a cloth bag for your purchase — even if the bag isn’t from their store. A bonus for you, while you promote the Friends!)
Teaneck Public Library benefits from private contributions to help provide for the extensive print and digital collections and innovative, accessible programming enjoyed by you, your family, and the 5,500 people who visit the library every week.
We are grateful for your generosity and appreciate the many ways you participate in increasing Teaneck Public Library’s value to our community.
Book Donations
The Friends of the Teaneck Public Library have installed a donation bin in the Township of Teaneck municipal parking lot in between the Municipal building and the Library building (facing the parking lot).
Residents may place book donations in this donation bin 24/7. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Teaneck Public Library. This bin is only for donations. Please do not deposit any library books in this donation bin. Library books placed in this bin will not be returned to the library and the patron who charged the items will be responsible for the replacement fees.
If the bin is full, please keep your donations until the bin has been emptied. If you have any questions, please contact the Friends of the Teaneck Public Library at teanecklibraryfriends@gmail.com.
Book Endowments
Here is your opportunity to give pleasure to others while helping to preserve the memory of a special person or honoring someone you admire.
Establish a Book Endowment or donate the cost of a single volume in the name of the person to the Teaneck Public Library.
A book plate will be placed in each book giving the name of the person in whose honor or memory the book is given and the name of the donor or donors.
If you like, you may suggest some subjects for book choices that would be appropriate.
Book as Memorials
A book memorial is an appreciated and fitting expression of sympathy and a lasting tribute that continues a person’s influence in the community.
Books as Tributes
Honor Books can…
- salute a retiring club officer
- mark a birthday or anniversary
- thank a business or a friend for a special favor
- share a child’s own favorite book with other children
To Donate a Single Volume:
Give the Teaneck Public Library your check and the following information:
- The name of the person to be remembered, as it should appear on the bookplate
- Your name or the organization’s name as it should appear on the bookplate
- The name and the address of the family of the person being remembered or the name and address of the person being honored, so that the proper acknowledgement can be sent
- Your address (for the card of acknowledgement)
- Subjects of books that would be appropriate (if you like)
For your convenience, please download the “Book Endowment Form.”
Acknowledgment
An appropriate acknowledgement will be sent to the family of the person to be remembered or to the person being honored. The amount is not mentioned.
All donations are tax-deductible.
Various endowment arrangements may be made by single donors, family groups, friends, or organization members to provide, each year in perpetuity, a worthwhile book designated by the donor.
What is Adopt-A-Shelf?
- It is really adopt-a-section. You may adopt more than one section.
- It can take up to 30 minutes depending on the section adopted.
- We ask that you come approximately every 2 weeks at your convenience.
- We are very flexible, you come in whenever we are open.
- Going on Vacation? NO PROBLEM: just let us know.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain your section by keeping it in numerical and alphabetical order.
For every 25 hours of service the library will dedicate a book in honor for the Adopt-A-Shelf volunteer. It is important to record each visit in the Adopt-A-Shelf file box. Please keep a record of your hours for your own information.
If you are interested in becoming an Adopt-A-Shelf volunteer, please fill out the Application Form and an Adopt-A-Shelf coordinator will contact you. You may also include your area of interest.
Our Teen Volunteer Program is available to residents and students in Teaneck, grades 7 through 12. To join, prospective volunteers must complete the Teen Volunteer Application. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and please allow up to one week for processing.
