.. i discovered Christina Stead by way of an Angela Carter essay. since then I’ve read three of her novels and - while Miss Herbert is certainly *good* - For Love Alone (set in Australia & England) and I’m Dying Laughing (Hollywood & France) are trooly fantastic / and, what’s more, could’ve been written by different authors inhabiting separate eras. we get a taste of her range in Ocean of Story, a collection of uncollected short fiction spanning her career. do you want Nu.Yawk? the native Australian can CITY with the best of ‘em (Renata Adler, Wm Gaddis, Delmore Schwartz, Tess Slesinger).
