Late July Touchstones
Had my season's first pasta caprese with garden tomatoes and basil for lunch and local sweet corn with dinner. Have also been enjoying cucumbers, green beans, and eggplant. Some things (lettuce, assorted herbs, nasturtiums) didn't want to grow for me this year but I did harvest some garlic last month.
In wildflower news the goldenrod is starting to show color and the milkweed is doing great. Its sweet-smelling late June flowers made me and many pollinators happy. I did see a monarch fly by last week but it didn't stop to investigate. I've also managed to save some black-eyed susans from the bunnies and found out that goldfinches like their seeds. Speaking of which, it's fledgling season and the feeders are emptying daily.
Hit the Lowell Folk Festival this past weekend for interesting music (this year's favorite: the Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago) and assorted snacks (Burmese pennyroyal fritters and kaya meatballs, fresh-squeezed limeade over very-welcome ice, coxinha, and gelato). The many heartier offerings remain intriguing in theory but don't work as street food in practice for overheated and clumsy me.
Need to make a point of visiting Lowell more. It's got interesting NHP properties, lots of eateries, and plenty of PokéStops. Weather permitting perhaps I can enjoy some of those next month.
