The Doctor owned a Doric plinth (PROSE: Cat's Cradle: Time's Crucible [+]Loading...["Cat's Cradle: Time's Crucible (novel)"]) which was kept in several versions of the Doctor's TARDIS control room.
History[[edit] | [edit source]]
The plinth was one of two main pedestals that the First Doctor kept in his TARDIS control room, alongside the eagle plinth. (TV: An Unearthly Child [+]Loading...["An Unearthly Child (TV story)"], et al.)
When Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright first entered the TARDIS, the ormolu clock was on this plinth. (TV: An Unearthly Child [+]Loading...["An Unearthly Child (TV story)"])
The plinth later held the armillary sphere. (TV: The Web Planet [+]Loading...["The Web Planet (TV story)"])
When Ramón Salamander dematerialised the TARDIS with the TARDIS doors open, Jamie McCrimmon held onto the base of the Doric plinth to not be pulled out of the TARDIS. (TV: The Enemy of the World [+]Loading...["The Enemy of the World (TV story)"])
The Seventh Doctor once took the plinth out of storage and put it back in his TARDIS control room. He attached the ormolu clock to it with a gravity bolt to counteract the frequent lurching of the TARDIS. (PROSE: Cat's Cradle: Time's Crucible [+]Loading...["Cat's Cradle: Time's Crucible (novel)"])
Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- A colour photograph of Patrick Troughton posing with the plinth was taken during the filming of The Power of the Daleks, offering a close look at the prop.
- The novelisation Doctor Who in an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks refers to a marble stand in the control room which holds the Napoleon bust. This may be intended to be the Doric plinth, as the wood column could be taken as stone to a viewer. The 2022 illustrated edition of the novelisation depicts this marble plinth as an ionic column taking the place of the Doric plinth.
- The Doric plinth is replaced in An Adventure in Space and Time and Twice Upon a Time with a Corinthian plinth.
- Unlike most other regularly recurring furniture pieces of the First and Second Doctor's control rooms, the Doric plinth does not appear in LEGO Dimensions.
